BTW TP, in terms of the laptop recognising devices, have you been testing with no other USB devices connected. Some USB implementations have historically suffered from being unable to provide sufficient power to high drainage devices, particularly if multiple devices are connected.

ThePublisher - 26 Apr 2008 19:25 - 6776 of 11003

Thanks guys,

K. Yes I have tried removing all the other USB devices - no luck.

Opt, Thanks I'll see what happens. I have got no further than the initial warning message.

TP

First update your bios as described earlier as it deals with a USB storage issue and your camera sort of works like a storage device.

Now try updating the software for your Ricoh camera because on the download page under the revision history it says the following -

"2007/12/26 Add the GR DIGITAL II into compatible models of Caplio software"

Your software is probably old and hence your camera will not be supported.

Uninstall the current software by going to the add/remove programs section of the control panel.

Run the CaplioSoftware_En.exe file at the link below which I believe extracts the installer, then run the Setup.exe file. (This file installs the camera drivers too which is probably why Windows isn't recognising it).

http://www.ricoh.com/r_dc/download/sw/win/dl/CaplioSoftware_En.exe

This should work if you follow all the instructions.

Finally the firmware update (all sorts of things are fixed), it's revision history and instructions for updating are here -

http://www.ricoh.com/r_dc/download/firmware/grd2/

Hope this helps.

Thanks miner,

A bit too occupied with more mundane things today to risk trying.

But will certainly revisit the recommendations.

You have been very kind and thorough in your suggestions.

I've got something called Greybird virus, Norton finds it but cant get rid of it, which I think is starting to slow up my PC up a lot after 2 or 3 hours

Richgit69 - 04 May 2008 16:38 - 6780 of 11003

I have a AMD SEMPRON 3100+ PC

I am looking for another PC mainly to handly 4+ DVI monitors and very hungry games ie F.E.A.R and Unreal Tornement 2004 and UT3 etc with out the crashing video cards.

1) Are AMD still as powerful and good as Intel??

2) Do I need Duo core or Quad core, whats the difference??

3) which CPU one should I get?

4) AGP or PCI-E X16 and how many slots? for either

Optimist - 05 May 2008 16:36 - 6781 of 11003

Richgit

There is an article comparing processors in the June edidion of PC Pro which is well worth reading.

According to their tests, nearly all of the AMD processors were slower than nearly all the Intel ones although the AMD may be cheaper. Of the Intel ones, the Core 2 Duo E8000 series apear to be the best performance at a reasonable price. Some Core 2 Quad's are faster but very expensive.

Do not confuse the Core 2 Duo with the now obsolete Core Duo which was never very good.

PCI-E expansion slots are the future.

Optimist, thanks I'll see if I can find a copy ;-)

rich,or something like THIS

Richgit69 - 05 May 2008 20:53 - 6785 of 11003

scussy, thanks ;-)

I think I looked at a Duo Core 3.00 GHz, with 2 x Geforce 8800 1gb dd2 dual dvi as I saw the games now need 3.00GHz to play especialy FEAR and UNREAL Tournement

Am I right about this??

scussy - 05 May 2008 23:58 - 6786 of 11003

you will need to overclock the cpu to get 3.00ghz,or you can get Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Edition QX9650 for 650 that does 3ghz as standard,(not worth the money unless your rich,)
the Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz easy overclocks to 3ghz, 140

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail 150

i dont think many games use the quad core at the moment, but its best to have quad for the other programs that are CPU hungry,
my IT friend has one and he says it goes like stink and he has loads of programs working at the same time,
as this PC is not a standard, have you got an IT man to biuld it,

Richgit69 - 06 May 2008 09:52 - 6787 of 11003

Scussy, no IT man, might find someone to put it together thou, not sure if they know how to overcock it ;)

Thought I could get the PC off the self, which will the cheaper do you think, build it or off the self?

scussy - 06 May 2008 23:22 - 6788 of 11003

you can get one off the shelf from http://www.overclockers.co.uk
you dont want it in SLI mode as the two graphics go to one screen, its only a software change so cannot be hard for them,
best bet is to ring them at OC's and tell them what you want, after added more mem (4gig) the case you want and windows that you want its about 1,000
i have bought parts to build 2 overclocked pcs from them in the past, when i get a new PC next i will go this way as my IT friend just said he prob could not get the parts that cheap,

i like this one

ThePublisher - 08 May 2008 16:38 - 6789 of 11003

Just loaded SP3 to my XP Pro.

Apart from the fact it failed yesterday, having done it without a hitch today, I am sure my laptop is running faster.

The download and installation seemed to take a couple of hours, but appears to be worth it - and a good excuse to pop out to the boozer.

TP

The Other Kevin - 08 May 2008 17:35 - 6790 of 11003

Tried the SP3 download but ended up with error message 0x80072F78. Can't understand the Microsoft explanations so I'll try again tomorrow.

CC - 09 May 2008 11:09 - 6791 of 11003

ok - am I screwed?

my pc won't run any executable files whatsoever so I can't get into etrade or outlook or even worse system restore.

Can't even run the cd burning software. However i have managed to get my files off to a memory stick

I would just restore xp but I'd quite like to get my outlook emails before I do that.
Tried sticking in the ms office cd to repair things but of course it's an exe file and won't run. aarrgghh.

any clues anyone ?

edit : i know if I create an outlook backup file it is *.pst. what does it call the live file?

Richgit69 - 09 May 2008 11:37 - 6792 of 11003

I am looking for a PC with this spec or better and cheaper

jeffmack - 09 May 2008 12:09 - 6793 of 11003

CC, is your virius software stopping exe files from running. Try turning it off

CC - 09 May 2008 12:29 - 6794 of 11003

well i'm getting as a typical example : "choose the program you want to use to open the file rundll32.exe
most annoying one is the "choose the program you want to use to open the file rstrui.exe" which is the system restore option.

No virus software on my pc.

Just done a windows reload on the repair option but it hasn't worked so going for the install another one next.
