How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

just been watching and waiting - dull as dishwater lol!!!

Scrip

if you have time take a look at the race i mentioned, there was 2 steamers and several drifters - the perfect race for trading if the volume had been a fraction higher

Scripophilist - 25 Jan 2005 21:17 - 682 of 10502

Curious drift on the draw at half time. Don't see that very often so bought and sold some quickly as the second half started.

"just been watching and waiting - dull as dishwater lol!!!"

Unless Watford get a goal, Liverpool will be happy. Tomorrow night will be a different ball game altogether I think. Can't wait.

As I am green I'm going to nip out to get some milk. You may want to trade the draw it will collapse quite quickly now.

Will have a look at the race.

"You may want to trade the draw it will collapse quite quickly now."

Then again!

Piptrader - 25 Jan 2005 21:41 - 684 of 10502

Fundamentalist - how do you 'look' at a race after its been settled. I presume you meant on Betfair somewhere?

Scripophilist - 25 Jan 2005 22:18 - 685 of 10502

You can't unless you actively capture it or are a member of the BDP forum.

Piptrader - 25 Jan 2005 22:29 - 686 of 10502

Ah, ok thanks.

Its high time for me to jump on board this thread and hopefully add my penny's worth.

Firstly, thanks Scrip for your recent email and will be in touch soon.

Hi to Fundamentalist and Harlosh, fellow reprobates from class of Nov 04.

I wasn't as quick off the blocks as you guys but feel that I've gathered enough information to hopefully make some serious profits. I've already done quite well on football, cricket, darts and tennis. Will be looking at other opportunities too. Made a sensational profit on the Eng v S.Africa draw today! It took over 3 days of backing and laying off as the odds were changing. It was hard work at times and I'd have been mightily p....d off if the match didnt end in a draw as I didnt green out. As the match progressed it looked more and more like a draw although there were many dodgy moments.

To those who are contemplating Scrips course in Feb - Get On It! You won't regret it. My knowledge of Betfair prior to Scrips Clitheroe intro presentation was zero so there's plenty of hope for those still unsure.

Bakko

welcome - glad to have you on the thread and good to hear you are doing well

like you - had a result backing the draw in the cricket - but the best move was greening up prior to the declaration, then going again once the declaration came!!!!!

Harlosh - 26 Jan 2005 07:43 - 689 of 10502

Hi Backko and welcome. Glad to have you on board.

Thanks Bakko, just been looking for a site with that info.

Harlosh - 26 Jan 2005 08:09 - 692 of 10502

Very poor liquidity unfortunately.

bakko - 26 Jan 2005 09:31 - 693 of 10502

Harlosh, I agree but the big singles matches are much better.

Harlosh - 26 Jan 2005 09:34 - 694 of 10502

Yep, just looking at the Hewitt match. Don't know much about his opponent though.

bakko - 26 Jan 2005 09:54 - 695 of 10502

Nalbandian's a pretty useful player. He got to the wimbledon final a couple of years ago where he got hammered by Federer. Hewitt's is probably got the edge with the home crowd

Harlosh - 26 Jan 2005 10:07 - 696 of 10502

Thanks Bakko. Looks like an easy one for Hewitt now. The odds have collapsed. Might be worth a lay soon though for a 5 set comeback!!! I wish.

Harlosh - 26 Jan 2005 10:09 - 697 of 10502

I'm amazed at the liquidity actually on the singles games. One the other day was over 3m. More than football. And at this time of the morning too. Who are these people that sit at home all day gambling on tennis matches I wonder!

Scripophilist - 26 Jan 2005 10:38 - 698 of 10502

Been to Homebase this morning with my wife so haven't been up to much this morning. Have you seen this headline?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4205925.stm

Betfair expands with Yahoo deal

UK online betting exchange Betfair has signed a deal with Yahoo UK and Ireland, extending its betting platform to a mass market audience.

Yahoo Betting, to be launched in March, will be built and managed by Betfair and customised for Yahoo users.

bakko - 26 Jan 2005 10:41 - 699 of 10502

I totally agree. Looks like these "layabouts" have a few bob to throw around too.

Not in on this game but will keep it running in the background and get in if an opportunity arises
