How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?
Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Harlosh, I agree but the big singles matches are much better.

Yep, just looking at the Hewitt match. Don't know much about his opponent though.

Nalbandian's a pretty useful player. He got to the wimbledon final a couple of years ago where he got hammered by Federer. Hewitt's is probably got the edge with the home crowd

Thanks Bakko. Looks like an easy one for Hewitt now. The odds have collapsed. Might be worth a lay soon though for a 5 set comeback!!! I wish.

I'm amazed at the liquidity actually on the singles games. One the other day was over 3m. More than football. And at this time of the morning too. Who are these people that sit at home all day gambling on tennis matches I wonder!

Been to Homebase this morning with my wife so haven't been up to much this morning. Have you seen this headline?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4205925.stm
Betfair expands with Yahoo deal
UK online betting exchange Betfair has signed a deal with Yahoo UK and Ireland, extending its betting platform to a mass market audience.
Yahoo Betting, to be launched in March, will be built and managed by Betfair and customised for Yahoo users.

I totally agree. Looks like these "layabouts" have a few bob to throw around too.
Not in on this game but will keep it running in the background and get in if an opportunity arises

Scrip, thanks for the welcome too. As mentioned earlier I will contact you in due course when I find a spare moment as I work full time.
I've looked at other sports and possible opportunities. As you're the guru, I'd like to see if they're viable or not

Sure, I continue to do work on other events so may have some new pointers in the future.
Couldn't resist the tennis, 6.6m traded, Because it is a cracking game and so close I have just been making a book on the event overround 2% at a time. The closest thing to printing money you can get IMHO.

Sorry to burden with such a simple question BUT what is the difference between spread betting and CFD's, and what advantage (if any) has one over the other?
Thanks
Steve

Scrip, did you capture a .csv from the tennis match ? I haven't looked at tennis yet and am interested to see how it behaved.

Whyallasteve,
Your really on the wrong thread here but don't wish to ignore you.
The answer to your question is rather complex. Too long I think to give an answer on here.
If you go to one of the compay's that trade both (D4F, Finspreads etc) you should find the information you are looking for there.
Better still, if you get hold of a copy of Shares magazine, give them a ring and try and order recent back issues. They have been doing a lot of very informative articles on S/B and CFD's just recently. The articles will tell you everything you wish to know.
Hope that helps.

Stick with this thread and go on Scrip's course. You'll be better off short term and probably longer term also.
