chocolat /Dailos

chocolat you are correct. To find how it is started go Start Button - Run - type msconfig - Enter then select the Startup tab.

You can then see where the staartup options are generated and dissable them if you want to. If you really want to permanently kill a startup option then delete it's source.

You would still do well to try different usernames.

Choc
I bet i'm thicker!

Thanks do i just untick it and press "apply"?
Or do i have to delete it (how?)

My wife shouldnt need her own password, she has her own laptop, trouble is, she has gone all green on me and wants to save the planet, so says its a waste of resources running two!!
I tried to explain i'm long a whole bunch of oil, coal and metal stocks, to no avail!

Optimist - 21 Jun 2008 12:08 - 6916 of 11003

Dailos

If you untick it and press apply that should stop it but you may get some confirmation box pop up on startup asking if you really want to dissable it.

The entry in MSConfig shows where it is started from. If it is from a startup folder all you have to do is delete the shortcut in that folder. If it is a registry entry then you have to use regedit to delete the registry entry (be careful with that).

No I don't use a firewall. You really don't need one if you have a router since you do not broadcast your IP address to the outside world.

----------

Spot on Kayak ! Has anyone on here ever known anyone who's security has been compromised by an external hacker coming in via a router (and also with XPs firewall switched on)?
Instead so many problems seem to occour to those using zonealarm etc... they are just not worth the effort, not to mention the cost IMHO..

Kayak - 21 Jun 2008 16:01 - 6918 of 11003

A software firewall does also stop suspect outgoing connections (some routers also have the ability to do so) and that of course is where many problems with firewalls originate. However that would only protect you in the case you already had a virus on your machine and the virus was connecting out. There is an argument that the virus could be reporting all your passwords to home base but that is really overkill in my opinion. After all the sort of people who insist on running a firewall will also be running anti-virus software and that will already have been triggered.

Yes, through the add/remove programs in control panel.

Optimist - 24 Jun 2008 09:09 - 6921 of 11003

So if I use a broadband router Zonealarm is a waste of time Kayak ?

Kayak - 25 Jun 2008 12:29 - 6924 of 11003

It wouldn't be a total waste of time but certainly a lot of complexity for little benefit.

Want to upgrade your RAM?

Try out the Crucial System Scanner to see what works for you.

brianboru - 25 Jun 2008 23:05 - 6926 of 11003

"Want to upgrade your RAM?"

My tip is if you do then don't buy any off of ebay!

Dil - 26 Jun 2008 14:30 - 6927 of 11003

Cheers Kayak , think I'll uninstall it from one of the kids pc's for a month and see what happens.

greekman - 26 Jun 2008 18:43 - 6928 of 11003

After having the continuing problem like many re downloading update Microsoft Network Framework 1.1 I have managed to download Network Framework 3.5.
Can I now uninstall version 1.1 and version 2.0.
Your advise would be appreciated.

greekman - 29 Jun 2008 17:56 - 6929 of 11003

Spent a couple of hours this weekend trying to find the answer to my query (last post) on other sites with no success, so still hoping someone out there can help, 'please'.

Kayak - 29 Jun 2008 18:03 - 6930 of 11003

It depends what .NET applications you are running. Applications are built to run with a particular version or versions, when you add a new version of .NET you are adding a version rather than upgrading.

greekman - 30 Jun 2008 07:33 - 6931 of 11003

Thanks Kayak,

Not sure what Net application I am running.
I have Vista system, and according to many, updates for Network Framework 1.1 just wont download with Vista. So that was the reason I downloaded the 3.5 version.
At present I have programmes network 1.1, net 2.0 and now net 3,5.
Sorry can't be much clearer. I had trouble when the ball point pen came out, so you can imagine the difficulty I have with computers.
If (on the poor explanation I have given) you can't help further, thanks again for the info and replying.

Kayak - 30 Jun 2008 07:46 - 6932 of 11003

It will be in the help text for the application, but I don't know how you would find the application. You could try searching all text/doc/pdf files in your computer for the string .NET !

greekman - 30 Jun 2008 08:33 - 6933 of 11003

Thanks again Kayak. I think I will be able to find it. Will try anyway.

Regards Greek.
