Donald Tusk said the “never-ending story” of the migrant crisis will be repeated unless urgent action is taken.

The continent has hurtled into chaos since the crisis began, with around one million migrants having landed on Greek islands.

And the former Polish president has warned there will be no way to send migrants back to the North African country, describing an easy solution as “virtually impossible”.

This is a reply from Teresa May, my MP, on overseas aid. Full and unedited. It doesn't address the fixed % of GDP which was my complaint. I have no issue with aid per se but fixing an amount that must be spent each year is schoolboy nonsense. I take the scrutiny clause with a large pinch of salt. It can't even control the total amount it gives away accurately.

Thank you for your email regarding overseas aid. I understand that a number of recent newspaper articles have reported claims that misrepresent or inaccurately portray projects supported by the UK, or focus on projects that are no longer funded.
UK aid is spent where it is most needed and is subject to rigorous internal and external checks and scrutiny at all stages. The Government has reformed the UK’s aid strategy, cutting wasteful programmes and making sure spending is firmly in the UK’s national interest. Alongside an increased Defence budget and the UK’s world class diplomatic service, UK aid serves British interests by increasing prosperity and stability in troubled regions across the world.
UK investment overseas has transformed the lives of millions for the better and is ultimately about ending aid dependency through jobs and growth. International development can create new markets and help deliver a more balanced, resilient global economy. Aid also matters for our own security because the root causes of many of the challenges we face in the UK lie elsewhere – for example, migration, terrorism, disease pandemics and climate change. The more we can do to tackle these issues overseas, the better we can protect ourselves here at home. This is an approach that works: it has helped reduce the threat to the UK from Ebola in West Africa, it is targeting the root causes of the migration crisis, and it is increasing economic prospects in fragile states to counter extremism and help build our future trading partners.

I also asked what the government planned to do about the steel industry:

Regarding steel, I fully recognise that the situation facing people across communities in the UK where the local economy is built on steel is uncertain and difficult. The steel industry across the UK and indeed Europe is facing very challenging economic conditions: there is overproduction across the world and the price of some steel has almost halved over the past year alone. While the Government cannot fix the price of steel, halt global overproduction or fix currency rates, it is doing all it can to help the industry and workers. The Government has paid steelmakers over £60 million in compensation for energy costs, recently voted to protect the industry from cheap imports, and has changed public procurement rules to help steel suppliers compete on a level playing field with international suppliers for major projects.
The Government has also recently announced that it will be exempting eligible Energy Intensive Industries, including steel, from the indirect costs of the Renewables Obligation and Small Feed-in-Tariffs. This will enable steelmakers to keep their bills down and also give certainty for future investment decisions. The steel industry’s request for flexibility over Industrial Emissions Directive exemptions has also been secured, saving the industry millions of pounds of unnecessary expenditure by offering steel companies more time to comply with this European legislation. Following recent talks in Europe, we also have encouraging and important commitments to speed up the European Commission’s work on unfair trade practices and ensure the effectiveness of State Aid rules.
While there is no straightforward solution to any of the complex issues involved, I can assure you that the Government has no intention of simply standing aside. We are doing everything within our power to support communities and the industry, and will continue to do so in the weeks, months and years ahead.
