Another odd thing is that on the header tabs on MoneyAm the right hand set of Traders's room, Investors' room and Forward Diary are missing, but the help tab above them is there. The relative positions of the tabs compared to the top one containing help is very different.

Optimist - 29 Aug 2008 17:00 - 7171 of 11003

Haystack

If you click on the compatibility button then those items re-appear.

In theory, IE8 renders the page exactly as the html standard requires so it could be MAM's fault. Then again, Beta 2 is doing a better job of displaying the BB list page than Beta 1 so Microsoft may not yet have sorted everything.

Strange or wot?

Here are my latest Microsoft Security Updates. The list was made from and was taken from 'Review your Update History.

NB. You can access this list via the Control Panel icon, named 'Automatic Updates'. This takes you to:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Then click on 'Review Your update history'.

The list is quite extensive and these are just the latest. They are all successful and have a 'green tick' against them. However, do you see the date for them? It's actually '01 September 2008'.

Has anyone else checked theirs?

If so, are your dates given as '01 September 2008' too?

Microsoft are looking to the future!

Kayak - 29 Aug 2008 17:15 - 7174 of 11003

Exec, check your PC clock :-)

The Other Kevin - 30 Aug 2008 09:00 - 7175 of 11003

Exec - All your Sept 1 ones were delivered to my machine automatically on Aug 19.
But in my wife's BT Yahoo Spam mail folder, which she checked today, are four items dated well into September. Very curious. Julian v Gregorian?

ExecLine - 30 Aug 2008 09:50 - 7176 of 11003

Guess which lovely person it is in our house who has used a 'Right click' on the clock at the bottom of the Desktop and has been into September and October to check on holiday dates, flights and the like and then clicked on 'OK' instead of 'Cancel' to come out of it?

She is lovely really, but she is also a bit wierd. She tells me, that for a start, she has slightly more than the average number of feet and that it is the same for her number of eyes.

Hmmm?

This has taken loads of time to put right, has really messed up my machine and is definitely worth some special favours from said person, I think. Agree? ;-)

I mean millions of 'Sent' e-mails are wrongly dated.

Well, not exactly millions, but, well, about two.

Optimist - 30 Aug 2008 10:18 - 7177 of 11003

There is a problem with the deffault time severs that Windows uses - They do not work with Windows.

Goto the Internet Time tab on the clock settings and enter an alternative server. Google "time servers" for more info.

The Other Kevin - 30 Aug 2008 11:38 - 7178 of 11003

Exec - Doesn't explain the emails dated 2,3,13 and 17 Sept in my lovely person's spam folder.

Kayak - 30 Aug 2008 11:47 - 7179 of 11003

I've seen this with spam mail. Many of these emails are sent from spam farms of pcs infected by viruses and I think a lot of casual pc users don't bother to set their PC clock correctly and if they do, don't bother about the date. Alternatively or possibly more likely, the spam message is preformatted with a given date and makes no reference to the pc date. The 'sent' date is in the text of the message, it is not something that the pc automatically puts in.

The Other Kevin - 30 Aug 2008 12:13 - 7180 of 11003

Kayak, you fully deserve your title of Fount of All Knowledge. Many thanks for the explanation. TOK

Tip:

Can't access a web site from the office?

Try this, if the site you are banned from, for example, is www.moneyam.com

Do a Google search for www.moneyam.com
Check out the result of the search.
Find where it says 'Cached' in the result.
Click on 'Cached'
Notice that the URL of the web site that comes up is not

http://www.moneyam.com/

but is actually

http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:GFQhjXTdiGsJ:www.moneyam.com/+www.moneyam.com&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=uk&lr=lang_en

Doing things this way might just get you onto the banned site.

Rather than using Windows (you can turn off the Windows facility), you can use a free third-party piece of software for time synchronization. You can select how often you wish to synchronize if you use Automachron from the wonderfully named One Guy Coding. One Guy Coding and select achron5.exe to download.

Execline...thanks for your comments...

"I would guess you have four leads but only three monitors. Here you wil see them all numbered up.

This is where you can activate/re-activate them and choose one of them to be the primary monitor. The primary monitor would ordinarily be the one with all the Windows Desktop icons."

However I can only see 2 monitors numbered in "settings"

ExecLine - 31 Aug 2008 13:49 - 7184 of 11003

My 5 says you most probably have one loose lead. I'm not absolutely certain - that's why it's only 5.

Anyhow, I'd suggest a bit of twiddle, push and tweak, round at the back of the machine.

Hehehehe.

:-)

foale - 31 Aug 2008 13:58 - 7185 of 11003

oh...I have a second problems now...

Inside my Dell pc at the top there is a large square box...at the back look slike a fan and the power supply lead plugs into it...
It has become very hot...
If I turn off the pc open the back..I can barely touch the box...
Also the fan thingy...seems to be pushing less air out then normal...

a) what is it...
b) should I replace it?
c) if yes to b) is is a simple/ cheap thing to buy/fit from say PC world?

Optimist - 31 Aug 2008 14:03 - 7186 of 11003

Foale

I'm not familiar with the Parhellia video card but can make the following general comments.

If you used the system restore option to roll back the computer after installing SP3 then that is probably a bad move and you would do well to undo those changes. If you want to uninstall a service pack then do it with Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs.

It sounds as though the system thinks that your video card has only two outputs. (Even if a monitor is dissconected it should still show as greyed out in the video settings box.)

You could try rolling back the video card driver in device manager but it would probably be easier to reinstall the Parhellia software and drivers. If you do that, you may as well download the latest version if you haven't already got it.

foale - 31 Aug 2008 14:12 - 7187 of 11003

Execline....sorted the monitor problem.....not a lead ..although please keep the 5 as a payment for next time...

In windows update..under NON critical hardware updates there sat a n update to my Parhelia 128mb...downloaded adn rebooted...and then 3 monitor numbers appeared..and I stretched them over the 3 screens in setting...

however your suggestion of moving the refresh rate up to 85 from 60mhz...might cut down on the flicker eye strain that I sometimes get..

Optimist - 31 Aug 2008 14:13 - 7188 of 11003

Re your other problem.

It sounds like your power supply is about to pack up. Most of them are a standard size but if you have a very old machine there is a possibility that some of the cables may be different.

Go for a reasonable size one - at least 350 watt. Prices will range from 15 to 100+. I have yet to see the advantages of the really expensive ones except for low noise if that is important to you.

PC World should stock them - not the cheapest or best but adequate and convenient.

foale - 31 Aug 2008 14:14 - 7189 of 11003

Optimist...thanks for those comments...I did try the restore option if would not let me...

the output of Parhelia is 3 leads to the monitors from the 2 adapters...
anyway fingers crossed now
