THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

Conservative leadership election: Poll finds Theresa May most popular candidate, even among Leave voters

Around 64 per cent of Leave voters have a positive opinion of Home Secretary

Theresa May is the most popular candidate in the Conservative Party leadership race - even among leave voters, a poll has revealed.

The Home Secretary, who backed the Remain campaign in the run-up to the EU referendum, is also the most well-known of the contenders fo the Tory crown, according to the YouGov poll published Saturday.

Members of the public were asked whether or not they knew enough about each of the leadership candidates to be able to give an opinion, and those who did were asked to say whether their opinion was positive, negative or neutral. They were also asked how they voted in the EU referendum on 23 June.

Haze.

When it comes to the tory leadership election the majority of the public think of it as buying a pig in a poke.

Oik, oik.

TANKER - 05 Jul 2016 06:55 - 72219 of 81564

Fred1new - 05 Jul 2016 12:10 - 72220 of 81564

Before the tory rat fight vote for PM is taken, are we going to see the "candidates'" tax returns and lists of overseas "investments"?

Duplicity comes to mind.

Haystack - 05 Jul 2016 13:23 - 72221 of 81564

Poll of Conservative members who will vote on last 2 candidates and choose leader. May is ahead on every item.

Haystack - 05 Jul 2016 13:30 - 72222 of 81564

Are people banging on about Andrea Leadsome's finance experience seriously saying what the country needs right now is to be led by a banker?

MaxK - 05 Jul 2016 13:43 - 72223 of 81564

What was the sample size of conservative voters?

Haystack - 05 Jul 2016 13:45 - 72224 of 81564

Not Conservative voters. The 150,000 members who will vote on leader.

Haystack - 05 Jul 2016 13:48 - 72225 of 81564

About 1,000 sample of Conservative members. Figures so clear that margins of error do not apply. Statistically it is a very good sample.

MaxK - 05 Jul 2016 13:57 - 72226 of 81564

You have nothing to worry about then.

ExecLine - 05 Jul 2016 14:04 - 72227 of 81564

The Conservative MPs (only) vote to put up the final 2 candidates from the list of 5 Tory MPs who put themselves up to be chosen as Leader of the party (and PM) for the leadership election.

A final vote to find the Leader is then held within the Conservative Party Membership as a whole. Voting powers here being limited to those members who have been members of the party for more than 3 months.

PS. It costs £25 to join as a Single Member (or £2.09 per month) under Standard Membership

The clue to the care taken is in the question "would best understand the economy"- they must be taking the Michael or it shows how much the average Tory MP knows about the economy.
Andrea is streets ahead when it comes to the economy. She was not a "Banker" although she worked in senior positions for banks, the last position being in Corporate Governance ie keeping "The Bankers" in line. She was economic secretary to the Treasury until moving to Minister of State for Energy.
Theresa studied Geography and worked at the Bank of England for about 12 years after University (job unknown, possibly counting money, does that make her a banker?), then as a financial consultant for a further 12 years. Bit young to be a consultant but you know what they say.
Either could do the job but Andrea has the X factor. You look at Theresa and feel like taking a holiday.

Haystack - 05 Jul 2016 14:10 - 72229 of 81564

Ken Clarke has said he will vote tactically for Crabb to keep Brexiteers off the ballot and then switch to May. I suspect many Conservative MPs may do that.

iturama - 05 Jul 2016 14:11 - 72230 of 81564

Bitter old sod.

Haystack - 05 Jul 2016 14:13 - 72231 of 81564

Sounds like a good idea. Exactly the same thing happened to him when he stood for leader in 2005 and he took it very well. It is called politics.

grannyboy - 05 Jul 2016 14:38 - 72233 of 81564

Does anybody with an once of common sense take a blind bit of notice
what ken clarke splutters from his hush puppy mouth..

He's the Tory's John Prescott...Looks like they've been hitting the bottle
continuously for their adult life...

Is it only haystack who gives a shit who or what runs the tory sinking ship??.

Haystack - 05 Jul 2016 14:41 - 72234 of 81564

I see no signs of it being a sinking ship. Once there is a new leader we will be up and away. The Conservatives' problems are temporary, Labour's are more existential.

Branson had a meeting with May last week to ask for a second referendum.
