I would suppose I'm a Tory and my wife is too but neither of us would waste our money joining the party.

I would guess too, that lots of the most recent people to join the Labour Party are affluent Tories. They join just to ensure keeping Corbyn in power so that, whilst he is leader, Labour don't stand a 'cat in hell's chance' of ever winning the next General Election. Once again though, I wouldn't spend any of my money doing such as that. However, there are lots who would.
