PC & MAC CLINIC - On line problem solving. (CPU)

Crocodile - 16 Dec 2002 03:59

hilary - 20 Oct 2008 16:27 - 7323 of 11003

Description

Streams movies, videos, music Internet radio and photos from your home PCs and storage devices to your HDTV.

Automatically finds all the digital media files on your home network and organizes them into an easily accessible library.

As a family, we tend to watch Saturday 3pm Premiership Matches live which are streamed back over the internet from Asian TV channels like Star Sports. There's also a lot of the IPL cricket matches which are broadcast.

Am I correct in thinking that with this little gizmo we could watch it on a TV rather than a PC monitor?

dealerdear - 20 Oct 2008 16:39 - 7324 of 11003

Selftrade have made some adjustments to their site over the weekend (add ons I think). I now can't bring the site up. I've tried from my favourites tag; opening-up a new window and going thr' google all to no avail. I've got rid of all the temp. internet files, history and all cookies and I still have the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Richgit69

It will work over a wirless connection, but with an ethernet cable you will have fewer problems with the video freezing or missing frames. Wireless networking just isn't as good as ethernet cables. I looked again at the spec and it does seem to support MS DRM though.

Hllary

I'm not sure whether it will stream from the Internet or not but if all you want to do is output your PC to TV then cheaper options are:- fit a video card with a TV out socket, get a VGA to HDMI cable if your TV is HD, has your TV got a VGA input? or you could buy a VGA to AV adaptor.

Thanks Opti. The biggest problem is that there aren't any PC's near a TV at the moment. I was attracted to the wireless aspect of Richgit's gizmo.

Optimist - 20 Oct 2008 17:33 - 7327 of 11003

Ty it then it may handle streaming from the net but even if it doesn't you can still use it for music, video and pictures (I still preffer ethernet conections to wireless though).

I am so chuffed with my Develo stuff, which allows me to use my 240v mains as a broadband network. Anywhere in the house, where there is a socket, then I shove in a Develo Homeplug and then that's where I've got 'speed of light' secure hard-wired ethernet broadband.

Here's the supplier I'd go for:

Yes, Exec,

I was going to suggest Devolo for that tele thingie.

But beware those of you living in old houses with more than one ring mains. You can waste a lot of trial and error diagnostics if you don't understand the principles.

Optimist - 20 Oct 2008 19:00 - 7330 of 11003

Being on a different ring main shouldn't stop those devices from working, but if you had two circuits on different phases then the network would not work between them.

Also, your neighbours on the same electrical phase (normally every third house in a street) may be able to get onto yor network.

Optimist, thanks again I just to clear up something about connecting the Netgear EVA8000

Am I right in thinking how can it be wireless if its connected by PC-EthernetCable-NetgearBox-HDMI Cable-TV HDMI, ummm, am i missing something here

ThePublisher - 20 Oct 2008 19:06 - 7332 of 11003

Opt,

Merely reporting the problem experienced by a pal in a converted Suffolk farm house.

But it could have been his phases that phased him !!!

Optimist - 20 Oct 2008 20:15 - 7333 of 11003

Richgit

The EVA8000 would connect to your PC using either/or WiFi / Ethernet. It will need to be positioned close to your TV and conected to the TV via an HDMI or other AV cable.

My comments regarding WiFi v Ethernet were to point out that although I'm sure the unit will work with WiFi, it will be better if you use an Ethernet cable

Hi

Just reiterating my previous question. Selftrade have made a minor adjustment to their website over the weekend and I now can't access the site let alone my account. According to them, I am the only person with this problem. I've tried geting rid of temp. files, history, cookies to no avail. I got rid of my firewall and managed to get half the site! I'm with Virginmedia. If anybody can give me reasons for this (I've never experienecd it before with any site) I'd really appreciate their help. Perhaps it is a ISP issue? I'm not around till later but will act on any advice I receive tonight.

Thanks

I wonder if it might be a Java issue?

Click on Tools, Internet Options, Programs, Manage add-ons

Scroll down the list and look for

Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10

Anything less than '10' means you aren't using the most recent issue and your Java program is not really up to date. The easy way to do a Java update is via MoneyAm's link. Say on the Stockwatch page.

And then there is the 'Pop up blocker' side of things to think about. This might be another possibility. There are quite a few that might be 'on' and causing interference. eg, IE, Google, Stumble, etc, etc. - but I doubt this is it.

HARRYCAT - 21 Oct 2008 17:24 - 7338 of 11003

Can you get in to DOS by pressing F8 & selecting safe mode with command prompt?
If so then you can run check disk as a DOS command.

breydon - 21 Oct 2008 18:12 - 7339 of 11003

non of the F keys seem to work
nothing when i press F8

Optimist - 21 Oct 2008 18:52 - 7340 of 11003

breydon

I does not sound good. You could try removing the battery for a few minutes and then try again, also disconnect any external leads that you have plugged in and take out the DVD drive. After that, you should check the warrenty.

breydon - 21 Oct 2008 18:54 - 7341 of 11003

WILL do that now
no warrenty left

breydon - 21 Oct 2008 19:00 - 7342 of 11003

no take battery out and all leads still nothing
