Looks like there's a lot of support for a change in the law about using mobile phones whilst driving.

When the driver uses a 'hands free/blue tooth' set up this is a very similar activity to, say tuning a radio or adjusting the temperature on the car's heater/air-conditioner.

Is this latter sort of car telephony use OK and a satisfactory alternative way of using a mobile phone? ie. Hands free phone use is OK?

I can't really get my head around why it is/was OK to, say take one's hand of the wheel to hang it out of the window to do a hand signal or maybe flick ash of a cigarette and do this whilst actually driving the moving car - but not to do, WHILST THE CAR IS STATIONARY AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS, say take a munch of a ham sandwich or a slurp from a drinking bottle.

The term "using a phone at the wheel" does need some clarification.

Do the authorities really mean "holding a mobile phone at the wheel"?

It's just another tax raising scam.

It’s illegal to ride a motorcycle or drive using hand-held phones or similar devices.
The rules are the same if you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic.

It’s also illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device when supervising a learner driver or rider.

Penalties for using your phone while driving
You can get an automatic fixed penalty notice if you’re caught using a hand-held phone while driving or riding. You’ll get 3 penalty points on your licence and a fine of £100.

Your case could also go to court and you could be disqualified from driving or riding and get a maximum fine of £1,000. Drivers of buses or goods vehicles could get a maximum fine of £2,500.

New drivers

You’ll lose your licence if you get 6 or more penalty points within 2 years of passing your test.

When you can use a phone in your vehicle
If you’re the driver, you can only use your phone in a vehicle if you:

Need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop

You can use hands-free phones, sat navs and 2-way radios when you’re driving or riding. But if the police think you’re distracted and not in control of your vehicle you could still get stopped and penalised.

I don't think its a tax raising gimmick...The amount of times i see drivers on
their mobiles or sending text has got out of hand, and the police are rarely
around to catch them, and these drivers deserves all they get, before other
innocents get injured or worse through their lack of concentration at the wheel.

Totally agree with gb, m/cycle cops could have a field day just riding around.

Jeremy Corbyn’s allies have said they believe rebellious Labour MPs could face deselection from their seats, as he prepares to assert his authority over the party if he wins the leadership race.

With the results of the contest due to be announced on Saturday, Len McCluskey, one of Corbyn’s most powerful backers, has told a BBC Panorama programme to be broadcast on Monday night, that disloyal MPs should be “held to account”.

“Some of the MPs have behaved despicably and disgracefully and they have shown no respect whatsoever to the leader and they should be held to account,” he told the BBC’s John Pienaar. Asked if disloyal MPs would be “asking for it”, McCluskey replied: “I think they would.”

Google faces sizeable back tax bill from Indonesia, report says

(ShareCast News) - Indonesia could slap Google with a $400m tax bill for last year alone, amid an investigation into possible illegal tax avoidance that has been stepped up in the wake of the European Commission's tax battle with Apple.

Indonesia's tax authorities plan to claw back five years of back taxes from the Alphabet Inc company, according to a Reuters report citing a senior tax official.

Taking confidence from Europe's �13bn tax bill for Apple, which has been followed by reports on Friday of a $120bn bill in Japan, Indonesia's tax office has escalated the issue to a criminal investigation after Google Asia Pacific declined to be audited.

Google Indonesia paid less than 0.1% of the total income and value-added taxes it owed last year, according to calculations made by the Indonesian tax office, with most of the revenue generated in the country booked through Google's Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore.

Google said it continues to cooperate with local authorities and has paid all applicable taxes.

Reuters reported that Muhammad Hanif, head of the tax office's special cases branch, said he planned to pursue back-tax claims from other companies that deliver content through the internet in Indonesia.
