Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

i patronise my local fishmonger, not you

I don't have a local fishmonger to patronise. Not seen one for years. Nor butcher, baker or candlestick maker.

fishmongers are certainly few and far between, and good ones even more so
one of the problems is that this country has always thought of fish as a cheap alternative to meat and are relatively unwilling to pay for quality

personally i am very happy indeed to pay good money for quality, and fortunately my local fishmonger supplies same - eg really fine and fresh hake steaks last night, and yes you do see the whole fish from which they were cut!


independent butchers are slowly making a comeback - my fishmonger is also a trained butcher as it happens - as are artisan bakers

I suppose we can thank Tesco , Sainsbury's etc for the situation really , they get into areas and knock out the locals . They all seem to be going smaller now .

Most of my orders are for a stock of freshly caught lemon soles. In one of the orders I received an absolutely massive live crab. Fortunately, we did have a big aluminium pot to cook him in! Delicious!

Where is your fishmonger C? I like dover sole, normally buy from M&S but expensive. I bought some lemon soles from Waitrose yesterday. Lunch today.
I also need some decent bones for my german shepherds. Waitrose is on the expensive side for them..:) They love lamb shanks, raw of course.

They also deliver overnight

we don't even own a freezer except at the top of the fridge and would only/always buy fresh on the day choosing what looks best at the time

I usually try that trick of asking for some bones and offcuts for the dogs,
they're a fraction of the cost ie: if you ask for spare ribs etc and there is
quite a lot of meat left on the bone, they all go nicely with a can of tesco
lager with a lemonade top...

Same with our fish&chip shop, I ask for some fish offcuts for the cats,
surprising how much fish is left on the tails.

I might even get a dog and a cat one day!!


WOOF WOOF!!....MEOW!!

My wife was given a jar of Ayam 'Rendang Curry Paste' from a regular dog walking friend, back from their summer spell in their French holiday home and obviously acquired from a French supermarket. She was told to look on Ayam's web site for a recipe and strongly recommended to give it a try - which she duly did.

The resultant curry was absolutely excellent being tasty, spicy, sweet and pea-nutty too. Here's the Ayam web site which shows you lots of their different pastes and recipes:

If it hadn’t inflicted so much damage upon Britain, one could almost start to feel sorry for the liberal Left. For the first time since 1997, that once most powerful of political tribes is not just out of office but also out of power.

The movement no longer has a home. It has been caught in a pincer movement between Theresa May’s surprisingly radical Conservatism, where Cameroon liberalism suddenly no longer has a place, and Jeremy Corbyn’s regressive neo-Marxists, to whom Blairites are hated class traitors. As for the Liberal Democrats, led by the hapless Tim Farron, they are a broken-down vehicle, their reputation ruined for a generation.

It’s not just that the liberal Left are political orphans: their entire world-view is in tatters. They had a few big theories. One was that Britain had an inbuilt “progressive majority” and that the only challenge was how to unite the Left while tacking to the centre.


“The establishment, including celebrities and entertainers, no longer sways voters; and attempts to demonise Eurosceptics as little Englanders, racists or bigots backfired spectacularly.”


Another core theory was that history was on their side when it came to social change, the slow demise of nation-states, multiculturalism and the rise of the EU, and that the longer they were in power the greater their majority would thus become. Hence their ideological belief in “modernity”, which, according to them, was inherently Left-wing.

A third was that “soft power” was key in a post-industrial age characterised by dwindling trade union membership: the fact that creative types, actors, teachers, museum directors and charity bosses were on the liberal Left would cement their grip on society. Last but not least, they believed that they had the moral high ground, and that they could shame their opponents into oblivion.
