THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

If i didn't laugh i'd be crying...LOL!

cynic - 19 Oct 2016 12:46 - 74065 of 81564

max - neither dc nor anyone else was ever going to get anything sensible let alone radical from the brussels brigade while uk remained "in" ...... i know fred doesn't agree

while you (and me and the majority of others) are realistic enough to know that uk will never ever get the perfect deal (obvious reasons), the eu itself is also under a lot of pressure so that it does not get skewered from one bunch of eurozone members or another

re - Calais children

There are so many test that can verify their age before they are allowed here.
They suppose to have family on the UK.

1- teeth tested
2- asked the family in UK of the age of the youth, if it matches with the age the youth is saying.
3- contact the country of origin
4 - stop the do gooders interfering on the side of the youth
5 - there was cases on the pass of a youth ( but he was not a youth but over 20 causing a serious assault on a youth once on the UK household refuse)
6- the checks should be done in France once here no chance of sending them back

Dentists condemn call for child migrants' teeth to be tested

A Tory MP's call for child migrants arriving in the UK from Calais to have their teeth tested to verify their ages has been condemned by dentists.

Several unaccompanied children have arrived to join relatives in the UK - amid suggestions they could be adults.
Monmouth MP David Davies said mandatory teeth checks would reassure people but the British Dental Association said it was unethical.

Home Office sources said additional checks will be made in the UK.
BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith said it was understood they will undergo further interviews about their background and their finger prints will be taken to cross check with other records which may contain their age details.

The first children with links to Britain arrived this week, after French authorities ratified a list drawn up by the charity Citizens UK, which is working with the government to bring unaccompanied minors over from Calais.

However, photographs of some of the children have been printed on the front pages of some national newspapers, along with headlines questioning their ages.

might be ok if dentists appointments were even readily available to uk residents!

Studies by the French indicate that only 5% of migrants in France came from Syria

Manuel,

Do you think if Article 50 is invoked and "glorious negotiations" start the UK that it is likely to get more or less favourable "deals" from deals Brussels than it was possible to obtain by negotiating while still a member of the EU?

If somebody was saying to me a "curse on your house" and they are at the same time tearing up any contracts they had made with me, but saying, at the same time they wanted to do deals with me, I think I would be very careful.

Might even tell them to B off.

I HOPE YOU POSTERS TOOK MY ADVICE AND BOUGHT LLOYS . 40% upside to come

Clocktower - 19 Oct 2016 15:58 - 74076 of 81564

How much does MAM charge per month for L2 ?

On the upgrade page it states £19.99 +VAT per month - but it seems they shorten the month when paid by DD - they have reduced the length of a month by taking payment every 30 days - Have others noticed? Misleading or what - Evey 30 days = 11.73 months per year.

Laurenrose - 19 Oct 2016 16:01 - 74077 of 81564

my info is better than that . buy

re - Calais children

Past refugee youths were NOT by over 40%

Since 2006 there have been 11,121 age disputes. Of those, 4,828 were found to have been adults

cynic - 19 Oct 2016 17:07 - 74080 of 81564

fred - 74076 - i knew that was your view but i beg to differ

because of the way eu is now set up - ie primarily ruled by germany - there was much less than zero chance of getting the radical changes required while uk remained in

by leaving, i very much hope a catalyst has been provided that will force eu to entirely overhaul swathes of key policies, ranging from fishing through agriculture and of course freedom of movement ..... there are a great many other significant aspects that also need to be changed root and branch

it is interesting that there are already moves to stop complete freedom of movement and to curb the influx of economic refugees ...... i don't think even this would have happened without brexit, though no doubt the bureaucrats will claim otherwise

============

as for trade deals, much as eu may want to throw a tantrum, they too cannot afford it, and perhaps less so than uk

on the other hand, they cannot offer too soft a deal either

brussels (germany) is now somewhat between a rock and a hard place, not least because there is already much discontent with the way eu is run from a great many people within eurozone ...... if there was a referendum even in NL, there's a good chance that even they would opt out ..... and we won't even mention all the bankrupt eurozone countries that only survive thanks to brussels largesse

Fred1new - 19 Oct 2016 17:44 - 74081 of 81564

Then I hope the Dutch have more sense than to hold a referendum.

Check % of Total EU GDP to UK and % of UK GDP to EU.

Also, it is easy to say that if we lose EU "deals" and "influence" that the rest of the world will be generous when they think they have the UK over a barrel.

And once again in that the rest of the world is a better place to do deals, why aren't those deals already being done?

-=-==

Again, at the moment I think the UK trying to duck its responsibilities regarding "immigrants" from Calais and it is noticed.

But go back 3-4 years and I believe that I suggested the "transit" camps similar to the end of WW2 should have been set.

Those would have given the opportunity to vet "incomers" and sort out "dangerous" elements etc..

-=-=-=-=

Anyway, I have burnt my apple purée.

-=-=

Another thing.

I know both of us pressure cook Beans and lentils and freeze them for later dates.

Just, bought a huge can (East End) (2.5 of Kilo) of pre-cooked Chickpeas.

God knows why.

They appear OK, perhaps a little softer than I like and ready now to be frozen.

Perfect for Houmous and curries and casseroles etc..

I like wandering around Asian and Chinese Supermarkets.

Feel safer when I am in them.

9-)

cynic - 19 Oct 2016 17:51 - 74082 of 81564

i never use my pressure cooker for haricots of chickpeas, but they certainly freeze well

btw, many of the lentil family do not need soaking o'night and so not worth cooking off in advance

if you have a pressure cooker, you may want to have a little play with beef short ribs
normally they take many hours of slow cooking, but in a pressure, only 1.25 to 1.5 hours

i've yet to try oxtail so i'm unsure how well the flavour will develop

===============

reverting back to EU
whatever merkel's (and others) headlines may say, experience tells us that this is rarely more than domestic window dressing
as you and i also know from experience, the real stuff gets done over many many hours, days, weeks and even months behind closed doors
