theres 8 furlongs in a mile. most horse prices are, or used to be mostly quoted in eighths,( in fact they still are mostly) hence 15/8 or 8/15 etc. if you calculate it out 6/4 is the same as 12/8ths both of which are 1 1/2 to one and say 7/2 is the same as 3 1/2 to one which is the same as
( in eigths) calculating upwards 7/2 = 14/4 =28/8 (theres those eighths again) all of which are equivalent to 3 1/2 to one . they just use the smallest or lowest denominator using whole numbers, but they can all be worked backwards to find the 1/8ths just as i have done above , in days now long gone we used to get prices such as 100/8 or 100/6 thats 12 1/2 to one and 16 2/3 to one in fractions. today we get quoted prices of 12/1 and 16/1.(when did or do we ever see13/1 or 17/1? )
as always the bookies have NIcked the difference, they just always seem to want and need a head start.
with shorter prices they use the same formula but in 1/16ths.always in their favour of course.

Let me give you an example of the 1987 Ascot Gold Cupmy first year as a traineeand as green as the thick little Scot is nowPaean won the race only just by 15L backed down to a starting price of 6/1 from 7s.Sadeem was second at 7/2...Saronicos third 7/1 Valuable Witness third 100/30 fav 4th Satco 5th 6/1 Caesar Imperator 6th 66/1 Bonhomie 7th 8/1 Authaal 9/1 and last of the eight which equals an over-round book of 109% just going back the one decimal point...And well under the average mark up of 18% JKD.

This years Gold Cup was won by Yeats (IRE) 6/4F with one extra runner at ninethe over-round book was 111% that included a hot-pot fava 25/1...33/1...40/1...and two 50/1 .you were tax free unlike the 1987 raceadd to that Betfair available now at just a little commission you are far better off now.but you wont think so.
