THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

actually not
i don't know where my grandparents on both sides lived when they first came to uk at the turn of 20th century, but by the time my mother was born in 1920, her parents were already firmly established in harrogate, and my father's family were in bayswater ...... both parents were educated in normal british schools

however, there are still strong jewish ethnic enclaves in various boroughs of london and leeds, and no doubt elsewhere too
this is a both a strength and a weakness, but that is an entirely different discussion

You will NEVER get muslims integrating or marrying outside their religion,
just as jews as far as i'm aware do not marry outside their religion, but
if the indigenous white christian/anglo saxon was to rail against marrying
someone from outside their beliefs they would be attacked and castigated
as racist...Just ask fred, don't bother asking cynic his heads still stuck in
the sand...LOL!

cynic - 08 Feb 2017 15:46 - 76054 of 81564

my first wife was not jewish nor is my son's nor my daughter's husband ...... nor my niece's nor my nephew's ..... nor my wife's niece's or nephew's

while it is still comparatively rare for an orthodox jew to marry out, it is becoming more and more common among the liberal fraternity

i cannot comment about trends among the muslim community, though i'm sure it is much tougher for a child to marry out
but then that is so with the sikhs and probably (i'ld guess) with hindus and maybe even buddhists

the same could have been said not so long ago about intermarriage between catholic and protestant, and assuredly between black and white

time breaks down these barriers, whether for better or worse

One of my daughters once went out with a guy from England for a couple of years which I thought was well out of order.

Hans Rosling died today. I have seen this before but worth another look as the man who made statistics entertaining.

I was in the Stamford Hill (Hackney) area today and it has a very large community of Haredi jews. They make even less effort to assimilate than your average muslim but appear to be harmless. I did however wonder if the John Lennon specs and premature balding foreheads are as mandatory as the black suits and hats?

Mervyn King: MPs’ attitude made Brexit inevitable

mervyn-large_trans_NvBQzQNjv4BqLYdoWXVyV
Lord King said the London-based elite failed to appreciate the views of those outside the capital, ahead of the EU referendum

By Szu Ping Chan

British politicians have “lost touch” with voters and elitist bids to suppress the EU debate made the referendum on membership that led to the Brexit vote “inevitable”, Mervyn King has said.

The former governor of the Bank of England said he “resent[ed]” suggestions by friends and acquaintances that Britons who “even contemplated” voting for Brexit were “ignorant” or “racist”.

He said voters were treated like "the British equivalent of the deplorables” – the term used by US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to describe half of Donald Trump’s supporters.

Lord King said the “striking” difference between voting patterns in London, Scotland and Northern Ireland compared with the rest of the UK in the June vote highlighted a stark divide between the capital and the majority of English regions in the debate.

“That gap between London and the rest of the country was something that I, living outside, noticed but all my friends in London didn’t really appreciate,” he said at the London School of Economics last night.

“I [was] told: but if you even contemplate voting for Brexit, you must be either ignorant, uneducated, stupid or racist. [My] response was: I’m none of those, and I resent being described in those terms.

“It was the British equivalent of the deplorables. And I think the reaction against it did play some role [in the Brexit vote].”

Lord King, who retired from the Bank of England in 2013 after a decade as governor, has said the vote to leave the EU represents “real opportunities” for economic reform.

To be fair Hays did vote out. He just has difficult days now and then. Must be all that pollution in The Smoke.

I would also guess that David Beckham has no chance either.

VICTIM - 09 Feb 2017 09:43 - 76065 of 81564

I was coming from the the Londoner perspective , but he did say there's no chance .

You're right Dill. Shirley Bassey is more their age. But no harm in dreaming.
