Vista Home basic - Does anyone know how to run CHKDSK please, as I have tried the XP way of doing it by typing in to the 'run' command box, but nothing happens?
Does Vista even recognise the basic DOS commands?

Optimist - 06 Jan 2009 09:49 - 7608 of 11003

Harry

You need to open a command prompt window and run chkdsk from there.

Type cmd in the run box.

Thanks. All sorted now.
It's not my laptop, but a friend has asked me to look at it as it is running very slowly. Dell Easynote with 446 mb RAM. Looks like he has got every program to run automatically (updates, defrag, anti-virus sweep etc) so when they all kick in the whole thing grinds to a very slow pace. Plus he has Norton which has now expired for the free updates, so might persuade him to take that off & put on a better A/V.
446 RAM is pretty low also??? Probably needs to double that?

I found out via the web that there are a couple of problems both connected to Nvidia. I updated the Nvidia driver and that cured my original problem with the screen and the shutting down. Now I have the second problem where the fan now runs continuously, so I need to find a solution to that.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Should the fan be very audible? I cant hear anything that sounds like a fan running.

Is it easy to replace a fan on a laptop?

My Dell XPS 1330 laptop is playing up. It boots up ok then atfer using it for 10-20 minutes it does one of two things

It locks and all programs will not respond, then 5 minutes later it will switch of.

The screen goes black then lightens with lines of colour (like a defrag screen) then it goes white then nothing happens and I have to manually switch off.

I tried a reinstall of win vista plus all the dell utilities/drivers but it is still the same. It is 13 months old.

Any ideas??

Jeffie: a first guess would be overheating. Are the fan(s) running? Are they clogged up with fluff (lucky you)? Careful use of a vacuum cleaner can work wonders here.

jeffmack - 06 Jan 2009 14:33 - 7611 of 11003

Seems like its a problem with the chipset over heating so Dell have fixed it so that the fan runs continuously. Seems to be a big problem but not officially recognised by Dell. Some have had the motherboard replaced, in some cases to the same model, to prolong the life of the laptop.

MightyMicro - 06 Jan 2009 19:20 - 7612 of 11003

jeffie: I was about to respond saying that these fans are temperature-controlled so if it's running at an audibly high speed continuously, that would suggest that the computer is running hot. Sadly, I didn't respond before Dell so I can't claim a prize!

Some time ago,if you can find it on this thread,
there was a discussion on laptops overheating.
They came up with a range of mounts? which
supply extra cooling via an USB port.

mac: I use one of those myself, as do a couple of my colleagues. It's made by Belkin, cost is under 20.

Widows XP Home Edition with SP3.
At start up msinf16h.exe & wowexec.exe fail to boot up (insufficient memory apparently, but at max now of 2 x 512mb) & they both appear in the Task Manager Process list but with no memory allocated. They are both part of Microsoft System Info 16-bit helper module. Nothing seems to suffer because of it, but anyone any idea what this helper module is please?

Optimist - 07 Jan 2009 16:18 - 7618 of 11003

If it's 16 bit then it should (!) be there only for legacy support. If you're not running any old programs, see if you can disable them in MSCONFIG. If that works for a while then dissable them permanently.

HARRYCAT - 07 Jan 2009 16:26 - 7619 of 11003

Thanks, I will try that.
I used to be running Microsoft Office 97 but I uninstalled that and installed OpenOffice from the Java site, the problem then first appeared, so maybe it was associated with that old program. All the rest are up to date editions.

I am small problem with my puter since last night i switched it on and all has booted up fine and it operates as it should and nothing has been altered to any of the setting. But since last night i am getting a box keep popping up every 10 seconds with autoplay trying to do something it is showing what looks like a torch moving left and right and a green bar that is moving as if it is trying to do something then after 10 seconds the box pops up again. If you try to cancel it it go away and then starts over again.

It is running win xp with zone alarm and avg anti virus and ad aware has anyone what is happening here as i have run out of ideas, could this be a virus or somethink that need switching off ????

For some pointers, have a look at these two sites:

Mega Bucks - 08 Jan 2009 10:36 - 7622 of 11003

@ExecLine thanks for the links but i have had a look and i still cannot work out what is wrong the computer is running as sweet as a nut but this annoying Autiplay banner keeps kicking in every 10 seconds with this torch thing i guess it must be somthing to do with the autoplay function on the cd player or something like that. But the interesting thing is that i have not used the cd play for a long time neither have i entered the control panel so i am stuffed at the moment,is there a switch or something that i can switch the autorun facility off so that i have to manually play them or maybe it another problem ???

jeffmack - 08 Jan 2009 10:37 - 7623 of 11003

Do you have anything plugged into a USB port?

Anyone used the websites that offer design of websites, programming java etc alot of these poeople seem to be from India or Pakistan etc. Basically you put up a request for someone to do the work for you and get bids for the work, you then put the money into a Escrow acount, which is then paid when the work is complete to you satisfactoin.

Or can anyone recommend a good reliable cheap website designer/programmer

ExecLine - 08 Jan 2009 11:59 - 7626 of 11003
