I work in Brussels but live in UK so download programs to my PC while in the UK. Its a pain that you cant download them outside of the UK.

I was wondering if when you download to a PC it must create a file somewhere (as you do not need to connect to internet to watch it) Therefore in theory maybe someone can download in UK and send you the file to copy to the appropriate folder. Just an idea, not sure if it works.

I have had a major problem with a big trojan attack yesterday how it got through i am not sure but we have had major problems with win xp the puter is up and running again but i have lost internet access via the cable modem.The network card is showing that it is working ok but i am getting a message 'tcp/ip network transport is not installed' is this causing the problem of not getting on the internetAll the other puter can get online but its just this one.
Could this be the problem or maybe something else that i am overlooking,so how do i get this tcp/ip problem sorted please ???

Sounds like something has trashed your network drivers. I would start by uninstalling your network card in device manager, reboot your computer and it should find the network card and install the drivers correctly. If it's a wired connection, just select the auto settings and it should find the router. If it's WiFi then you may have to set up the connection again.

As the problem could have been caused by a virus, I suggest that you disconnect the router from the Internet and all other computers until you're sure that it is clean and stays clean after a few reboots. As long as you can ping your router, that means that it should be OK once you reconnect to the net.

Opto have just done the network suggestion and rebooted it again and no luck i am afraid,any other thoughts on this one i noticed that when i rebooted it again that tcp/ip message came up again.

Th puter is working 95% as it should do but i am getting another little window popping up.

The file or directory\WINDOWS\Prefetch\EXPLORE.EXE-27122324.pf is corrupt and unreadable.

What the hell is this then as it run OKish and better than it did last night i don really want to re-install win xp again as i have so much on it.

Check out this link for details on that error message although I have not had time to look closely at the solution.

One solution to try is to run XP setup from the CD and select the repair function. This will replace all of your Windows files with the original ones and hopefully give you a working machine but it can sometimes have problems and you will have to reload all of the MS fixes and service packs. Also if you have changed to a larger HDD over 120GB then you must use an SP2 setup disk.

If you want to troubleshoot the network, please start by opening a command window, run "ipconfig /all" and post the output.

just to add,i lost my networking,lost to sons pc first,then my 2 printers would not print from laptop,then lost connection from office pc to laptop,
it was caused by AVG update (i think),i had to reset all pc's firewall to in domain,for some reason they were changed,
working all ok now,
just in case others have the same problem it looks like networking only works when the new AVG 8 connection in firewall is set to computer in domain,

There is an import/export option. On Outlook it's under the File menu. All you have to do is follow the wizard. Don't forget to backup your contacts and calender as well.

Also, run Belarc Advisor and save the output to disk.

Opto if i was to do a new install of xp does it have a option to save all current information on the existing operating system,if i remember correctly from when i went friom say win 98 to xp it asked if i wanted to transfer the data from 98 to the new system would that be possible if i was to re-install xp over the xp that is on the pc at the moment ????

Yes but you still need to back up your data.

When you run the XP setup disk, setup will first give you the option to recover using the recovery console. This is a limited command prompt only and is for experts.

If you do not select that, setup will then search for existing installations and if it finds them will give you the option to repair. If you accept this, all Windows files will be replaced with the original versions, but most of the settings and existing programs should still be there.

The downside of this is that it can sometimes fail, hence the nedd to back things up, any virus programs will still be there. You will still have to reinstall all updates and service packs.

Even if you choose a fresh install without formatting the disk, most of your data, program files and viruses will still be there allthogh more difficult for Windows to access.

Also, have you tried using system restore to put it back to a state a couple of weeks ago?

I think that quickcam 8.1.5 is paid for only piece of software, whch mean you will be unlikely to find it. HAve you tried washong the CD in mild washing up liquid and drying carefully with lint free cloth or air drying.

Any recommendations for laptops in the region of 500.
Aldi have one on offer this Thursday for 450 but not sure whether it would suit as it appears to share system memory.

Dell have some offers on this week - are they are good?

I thought I'd put a news collector on my Vista sidebar.

Am I right in thinking that the 'Download Gadget' button on this site is incorrectly programmed.

I get an html file to download and that simply calls up the page we've been looking at.
