THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

"they get work by word of mouth" and cash in hand :-)

Burning polystyrene on the facade of a building:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbs7Sl_zNCg

ExecLine - 14 Jun 2017 12:51 - 77882 of 81564

Apparently, there is a strong possibility the fire was started and spread externally from the external polystyrene cladding and that it quickly spread upwards as the cladding fixing method, being spaced away from the external wall, acted like a funnel.

There is also a strong possibility, that there was no internal fire prevention system in the block (sprinkler system) or fire alarm system.

The only fire exit was also the only entrance to the building.

WTF! ???

Laurenrose - 14 Jun 2017 12:59 - 77883 of 81564

cynic not ever one works like you . some are honest it sounds like you are not ,

Laurenrose - 14 Jun 2017 13:03 - 77884 of 81564

has I sad many times I do not mind paying my tax and think we should all pay a little more like 3p more income tax to pay for our wonderful services

ExecLine - 14 Jun 2017 13:09 - 77885 of 81564

Piers Morgan gives the boss of Rydon (the Grenfell Tower building's main refurbishment contractor) a right grilling:

Rydon boss says he doesn't know what the cladding was made from or even whether the building had a fire prevention system

Laurenrose - 14 Jun 2017 13:19 - 77886 of 81564

only a person trying to avoid paying is tax would make a statement on others , it never entered my head

Laurenrose - 14 Jun 2017 13:29 - 77887 of 81564

my daughter why did they not call for the army raf to helicopter those at windows out they are trained to do that she is in the raf and her mother was in for 12 years

it should be apart of any incident

Stan - 14 Jun 2017 13:30 - 77888 of 81564

If anyone or organisation wanted to spend 10million pounds to redesign a block of flats to fail if a fire broke out, then this was an example of how to achieve that end.

This major incident reminds me of the "Homes for Votes scandal" in the 80s by Westminster Tory council and in particular Shirley Porter who was described by Andrew Hosken and Nicholas Lezard in the following terms: "She remains, by a considerable margin, the most corrupt British public figure in living memory."

cynic - 14 Jun 2017 14:45 - 77889 of 81564

77887 - because the downdraught from the rotor blades would have fed the fire ..... amazed you did not know that

77888 - that was prior to philip green and his antics
for all that, she was an absolute disgrace, and showed just absolute greed ...... being the daughter of jack cohen (tesco) she was hardly short of a shilling

Laurenrose - 14 Jun 2017 16:11 - 77890 of 81564

cynic in the motion of dropping the ladders then you move in not until all is set for the act of the person ready to grab the line

cynic - 14 Jun 2017 16:26 - 77891 of 81564

and while you hover getting everything into position - always assuming you can get peeps to where they might be able to use a ladder in this instance - then you'll be blasting oxygen into the flames
great idea!

Laurenrose - 14 Jun 2017 16:31 - 77892 of 81564

so you would just watch them burn , have you never severed in the forces ,
the service soldiers are not stupid , its in and out one life saved is better than the extra
one dead , no action killed them .

go and lie down cynic the thought of helping any one makes you sick

cynic - 14 Jun 2017 16:47 - 77893 of 81564

no they're not and that's why helis were not deployed!

ExecLine - 14 Jun 2017 18:41 - 77894 of 81564

What killed or burned the inhabitants, was the lack of a fire escape (and quite a few other factors too) not the lack of a helicopter fanning the flames.

One lesson worth learning is the one where you go around your own home, checking all the potential risks, including fire risks, and then make sure you've got:

Emergency telephone numbers handy, which are near or easily accessible for each phone.
Fire extinguishers and ones which will also deal with electrical fires too (Kitchen and upstairs).
A fire blanket (kitchen and upstairs).
A method of physical escape and a route for it planned, should you have fire which prevents you getting downstairs and out of the door.

Check you haven't got too many socket 'double/triple' adapters/extensions running from just one location.
Divide the 'Watts' by the 'Volts' (say '240') to work out the Current ('Amps') loading. Check you aren't ever overloading any extension cables. These latter should always be uncoiled so that they don't overheat and melt. My daughter ran a heater from an unfurled 5 amp extension cable and duly melted it.
Have your main electrical appliances regularly checked over by an electrician to see they are all properly earthed. If these are not properly earthed and you were to get an electrical shock, then you would keep on (ad infinitum) getting electrocuted because the appliance's fuse wouldn't blow. This nearly happened to both my wife and my daughter, who kept getting 'tingles' in our laundry room.
If a 13amp plug ever blows a fuse, find out why before you replace that fuse. Never use a bit of copper wire or aluminium foil to do the job! Always use a proper fuse.
Any indoor laundry driers need particular care and regular inspection. These are the major cause of house fires. I personally know a farmer who lost most of his house's contents to smoke damage from a faulty laundry drier.
Take care using Candles around the house, particularly with utterly irresponsible young 'girlie' girls and the like.
Take a lesson from Claudia Winkleman and be careful with kid's clothes when the kids stand in front of a real house fire.
Consider fitting a Fire Door in certain parts of your house. I believe they were utterly missing in all of Grenfell Tower.
Careful how and where you store Barbecue Gas bottles and canisters.
Consider getting a fire extinguisher for your barbecue.
Never start a barbecue with Petrol. It will immediately blow up in your face and badly burn you! This actually happened to a MoneyAm user (Mr Euro, I think).
Careful how and where you store flammable liquids in the house (eg, meths, turps, nail varnish and remover).
Check around for the perfumed smell of Gas. I actually know someone whose bungalow blew up from one of these. It was completely flattened and utterly destroyed. I also had a row once with a stupid neighbour who told me "It had always smelled of gas and so was obviously nothing to worry about." I told him he was a stupid bastard and reported the smell of gas to British Gas at his home myself.

The people in these burned out flats have lost everything. It's not a bad idea to have some sort of an 'Emergency Plan' in place for yourself.

cynic - 14 Jun 2017 19:11 - 77895 of 81564

how do you make an external fire-escape for 24 floors?
even hotels operate on internal staircases in case of fire

at the moment, we are all guessing as to why this fire seems to have spread so fast, but i expect properly informed opinion will start to surface pretty quickly

in the meantime, i am amazed that there only a dozen reported deaths so far
i would certainly have expected far more, and i remain in fear that the final count will be close on 75

MaxK - 14 Jun 2017 19:41 - 77896 of 81564

The potential problems with fire was foreseen long ago, indeed tower blocks with external escapes close by to the disaster can be seen here.

Tiny Tim has resignated.

The gay (sad) mafia have bagged another victim.

grannyboy - 15 Jun 2017 07:40 - 77898 of 81564

I think tinny tims future was decided long before his frick up on gay rights.

People got fed up with his shrill moronic rantings over his demands of wanting
another referendum...

VICTIM - 15 Jun 2017 07:47 - 77899 of 81564

I know we play hell with them but in all honesty it's getting hard not to upset someone these days , saying something in particular is fraught with lashings of anger and hatred , no wonder we are where we are .
