Wal-Mart green with energy
Discount chain trying out energy-efficient designs
By STEVE QUINN
The Associated Press
Sunday, July 24, 2005
McKINNEY, Texas - Wal-Mart is experimenting with its first environmentally friendly store as it searches for ways to conserve resources and save money.
The world's largest retailer was scheduled to open a 206,000-square-foot building last week that will include features such as a 120-foot-tall wind turbine that will produce about 5 percent of the store's energy and a rainwater harvesting pond designed to provide 95 percent of the water needed for irrigation.
"We want to push this thing to the limit," said Don Moseley, manager of experimental projects for the Bentonville, Ark., company. "We don't expect everything to work, but with every component of our business, we want to be more sustainable, more economical or more environmentally responsible."
A second experimental store is under construction in Aurora, Colo.
Wal-Mart wants some of the features in the store's design to one day be viewed as standard, including waterless urinals in customer bathrooms, saving about one gallon of water per usage; recycled cooking oil from the store's deli and engine oil from the auto center that will be used to help heat the building; and climate control measures and alternative refrigeration units that are projected to save enough electricity to power 135 single-family homes for one year.
The company said there were additional costs with the conservation efforts but would not elaborate on the price tag.
"We want to see if this can save us some money and keep our costs down," said Gus Whitcomb, Wal-Mart's area director of corporate affairs.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has been working to polish its image as an employee and community-friendly corporation. In April, the company earmarked $35 million over 10 years to help the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation conserve one acre of priority habitat for each acre developed.
Analyst Al Meyers of Retail Forward Inc. said he'll be watching the store and the company's environmental efforts closely.
"This is a little counterintuitive because they are a bare-bones, lowest operational expense company in the industry," he said.
Moseley said Wal-Mart chose McKinney, a city of 92,000 residents about 30 miles north of Dallas, for the new building because it has a traditional store nearby to gauge its progress.

Also they are still top of the Fortune 500, and will want to stay there, and Greenseal can help them do that, by reducing costs, and the bonus of being able to say they are using environmentally friendly packaging ....
Walmart tops Fortune Global 500
Tuesday July 12, 2005 14:56 - (SA)
American retail giant Walmart has topped the Fortune Global 500 list of the world's richest companies.
This is the fourth year in a row that the retailer has held the top position on the list compiled by the business magazine.
In a statement, Fortune said revenues for Global 500 companies increased by 13% and profits were up 27% for 2004.
"It got a lot harder to join the ranks of the world's largest corporations this year," Fortune writer Janet Guyon writes in her introduction to the list.
The companies who make up the top ten on the list are:
No. 2 BP (Britain)
No. 3 Exxon Mobil (US)
No. 4 Royal Dutch/Shell Group (Britain/Netherlands)
No. 5 General Motors (US)
No. 6 DaimlerChrysler (Germany)
No. 7 Toyota Motor (Japan)
No. 8 Ford Motor (US)
No. 9 General Electric (US.)
No. 10 Total (France)
Oil companies and European and Asian car manufacturers performed especially well on the list.
The United States had 176 companies on this year's list, far more than any other country. However, there are 14 fewer US companies on the list this year than last year, mainly due to the weak dollar, the magazine said.
The number of Chinese companies on the list increased to 16 this year, up from 15 last year and just three in 1995. Five Indian companies are on the list, up from four last year and one the year before.
The list and accompanying stories appear in the July 25 issue of Fortune.

And Starpol also falls into Wal-Mart's category for this statement "with every component of our business, we want to be more sustainable, more economical or more environmentally responsible."

Paul - Sorry - but whilst I would want to beleive you, your postings are pure speculation at this stage. - There is not an ounce of evidence to suggest that WM is looking at any of the SEO products. It may well be that they are and we know that SEO have done presentations to WM - but there has been no news about anything else - so far.

Shouldn't be long to wait now folks, yes the trials appear to have taken a long time, food packaging trials do, especially in this case where there is new technology to packaging and will probably involve several weeks trials to obtain sufficient data, shipment into stores, completion of shelf-life tests, product testing, microbiological testing, rejection rates, market analysis etc, etc.
This thorough work up front will be of benefit on a roll-out and I would expect there is a countdown by many non-Asda UK packers to the end of the Asda exclusivity and then there's likely US roll-out as well.
IMO ii is wrong saying that sale of 50% Biotec was a panic, SEO ensured that they secured the purchase of what they needed, funded by 9m at 21.15p from Institutions. This ensured that SEO got what they needed and can you imagine SEO getting that funding without a good case.
If you've invested, can you hold your nerve in the face of the shorters and panic sellers, although nothing wrong with locking in profits, done it myself on MMG ealier this year, its just with SEO, we know the next RNS's could be the ones we have waited for and then we're off and running big-time. lets hope so anyway.
Thank God some sense of normality has returned to this thread, please keep it that way with sensible posts for and against and not pages of crap slanging matches.

andysmith - given a distinct lack of any holdings RNSs - I still retain my view at the time of the placing - it said only Institutions supported the placing - not purchased any shares for long term holding - and it still remains IMO they took them and sold them - that was their support - they knew it would be easy to sell them off to small PIs- now the overhang is clear - the truth is starting to come out - the delays and problems IMO - everyone who got "spun" into believing the Institutions brought in to hold is wearing RT specs.
