Cant you just leave it running on your home PC and then set up remote access with something like logmein, then just pop into an internet cafe now and then to check it is still running. Also, not tried it but I know there is a version of MT4 for a mobile phone (smartphone). Im waiting for the iPhone version.

Seymour Clearly - 01 Apr 2009 12:52 - 7881 of 11003

Could do Jeff but Mrs Clearly's not happy about running the PC whilst we're away, even though it's on whilst we're asleep!

edit - the idea of a VPS is very attractive, but it's like double dutch at the moment.

There should be no problem leaving a computer running, I do it with mine 24/365, you can always switch the monitor off.

I would personally not use something a insecure as Logmein, but many people do, and I have not heard of any specific security breaches so I'm probably being paranoid.

Assuming that you can't install a VPN, install TightVNC on your home computer with a 16 digit random password, create a rule in your router for it and you will be able to access your hope machine from anywhere.

Flossie,

If you go the VPS route, you'll need to ensure it's a Windows server as Linux is nbg for MT4.

Seymour Clearly - 01 Apr 2009 16:06 - 7884 of 11003

Thanks folks. I think I might just leave my PC running at home or lappy at work but don't want the staff peeking! We leave all our PCs running at work so shouldn't be a problem really, but my home PC's creaking a bit now. Think I'll blow the dust out of it before I go away.Always switch the monitor and sound system off o/night anyway.

Longer term, Hiltops idea sounds great but I haven't got a bloody clue about this. I'll phone a friend!

BTW my XDA Orbit 2 runs windows mobile 6 professional. I can't get it to connect to my PC for backup, and I can't get mobile internet on it.I've tried the basic comms manager and the option for Data connection is greyed out. Can anyone help as I'm concerned I haven't done a backup for ages, and would also like to be able to use MT4 for Windows mobile. Can anyone think what I might have done wrong? I have done a backup in the past, so there's something stupid I haven't done.

I suppose I could just find a WiFi point, and access that as & when, but I may not even be near a wifi point for a few days.

If you are worried about other people peaking at your computer, then you can always lock the screen. This works with Windows Remote Desktop, it may well work with Logmein but you would have to check it with TightVNC as using that may unlock the screen.

FWIW, there is another aspect you may have to consider - that of fire-risk.
If you have an industrial site then insurance cover will (probably) include leaving some electrics on 24/7.
However, at home the cover might include items like fridge/freezers and your video-recorder, since these are designed to be on. However, PC may not be rated for unattended operation and in the event of a Claim you might find the insurers will insist it is not covered.
+ Best to get their permission beforehand, eh?
You can reduce the consequences of component failure, by isolating the PC ( so it's not near inflamble material and providing a cool air supply, esp. in summer.
Providing good interference filtering is another precaution, but this should be something a little more professional than expensive "surge protectors" available from computer shops. Again you might ask your insurers to assist, although their expertise it unlikley to worth much, unless the filter meets some "recognised" Standard.

I think the only satisfactory solution is VPS hosting as Hiltops suggests. She's always one step ahead :-)

Can anyone give me an idiot's guide to hosting? I want to run 2 copies of Metatrader, one live and one demo account. And can I do it before Friday night??!

hilary - 01 Apr 2009 20:58 - 7889 of 11003

Only the one step, Flossie?

:o)

hilary - 01 Apr 2009 21:03 - 7890 of 11003

Or there's always the "MRS30%" option for added security if you're worried. Cheques to NMT.

:o)

Must dash, it's half-time.

Seymour Clearly - 01 Apr 2009 23:25 - 7891 of 11003

You've been watching the footie, I've been doing real exercise, followed by a bit of right arm work with a glass.

Are you negotiable?

That didn't sound quite right. Hmmm.

hilary - 02 Apr 2009 09:49 - 7892 of 11003

29% for friends but just remember that Big Sister's watching you, Flossie.

:o)

chocolat - 02 Apr 2009 09:55 - 7893 of 11003

Too right ;)

Seymour Clearly - 02 Apr 2009 12:54 - 7894 of 11003

Are you peeking over Hil's shoulder Chocopos? I know she's watching my every move now but two of you? That's a bit much.

And I still haven't had a proper answer about the easy way to set up a VPS to run programs remotely 24/7. Look like it's leave the lappy on at work with a screensaver lock on.

hilary - 02 Apr 2009 13:34 - 7895 of 11003

The idea is simple, Flossie. You just rent some server space and are then given login/access details. Make sure it's a Windows server as MT4 doesn't like Linux. You then upload, install and run your own files and programs just as you would your own PC. You can run multiple instances of MT4 on the same VPS.

The only downside is that if there's a server outage, MT4 will need to be restarted manually. If you do it on an ongoing basis you really need some sort of regular IP pinging setup which sends a text message when there's a problem.

Seymour Clearly - 02 Apr 2009 13:42 - 7896 of 11003

You mean like this Hiltops?

EA_syspace

:-)

Got to have a go.

edit: & how much memory should I need?

hilary - 02 Apr 2009 14:04 - 7897 of 11003

They'll do Flossie, but there are loads out there. You don't need much memory either. If it were me, I'd be quizing them on recent downtime logs before saying yes.

In the meantime I've asked somebody who uses VPS if they've any recommendation.

Seymour Clearly - 02 Apr 2009 14:07 - 7898 of 11003

Thanks Hiltops. Appreciate it.

Fred1new - 02 Apr 2009 14:29 - 7899 of 11003

You could leave the computer on and put it in the Fridge. Should prevent it going on fire as long as you don't switch the fridge off.

Only joking.

1)
Is it possible to load the XP pack 3 in safe mode on Sony vgn laptop? I am having a problem doing it. Problem maybe due to the antiviral program I am running.

2)
Has anybody any experience of MATSHITA UJ-840D Cd-rom drive.

It will read normal CDS as usual, but I am unable to copy files to a CD with it.

Have looked on the internet and there seems to be a fair amount of problems with this drive and it is without any obvious upgrade driver.

When trouble shooting it appears OK.

Did check with DRIVER DETECTIVE. The result suggested that I had about 20 out of date drivers. This made me a little suspicious as I have regularly updated from Sony, and the machine seems to be working otherwise.

Grateful for any help!
