Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

The last article "EU wants Brexit money this month, Davis seeks 'political' fix"
Reminded me of the statement :
"By Hew Strachan7:00AM BST 02 Aug 2014
"The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life”. "

Oh dear Freda, I'm truly gutted as I'm sure we all are that you are "wandering around looking for reasons for some of my losses"
For somebody who posts daily the folly of conservatism and the wonders of socialism why are you even here? Maybe give Jezza a bell and ask him what stocks to buy.
Anyway hope this cheers you up :0)
Happy 100th Anniversary, Communists!

Communists of the world, it is time to rejoice! Nov. 7 is the 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. On that day in 1917 the Lenin-led Reds staged a coup in St. Petersburg, seizing power from the first democratically elected government in 1,000 years. This was the first time in history that a communist regime had toppled a government but certainly not the last.
But where are the celebrations of this magnificent moment? We have not heard a word of congratulations even from the nominally communist nations of China, Venezuela, Cuba, Sweden, Vietnam, or even the Upper West Side of Manhattan. No parties on the college campuses, nothing from Hollywood or even Bernie Sanders?
What about that reliable bastion of leftism — the mainstream media? No reverential videos of Lenin and Stalin from CNN? What about glowing tributes from the New York Times? Why the silence?
Before 1917, the communist utopia concocted by the twisted mind of a disgruntled rabbi's son from Germany named Karl Marx had the credibility of the unproven hypothesis. That changed abruptly on that historic November day. The Soviet insurrection that overthrew the legitimate Kerensky government ushered in a wave of terror that was unprecedented.
The Red gangsters that ruled Russia made Genghis Khan and Attila the Hun look like amateurs in the art of carnage. In order to consolidate power over a majority of Russians who did not believe in socialism, the Leninist thugs had to murder tens of millions and incarcerate countless others in gulags.
And how did their economic utopia fare? Not very well. For virtually the entire 20 years following the communist coup, the country was in perpetual famine. It did not help that on the way to collectivizing agriculture, the Soviets murdered millions of productive independent kulak farmers who were responsible for most of Russia's agricultural output.
The massacre of their own people by the communists served as a template for future revolutions. Since 1917, communism has been tried in 37 countries worldwide and has a perfectly unblemished record of failure. By contrast, more than 2 billion people, primarily in Asia, have been lifted out of poverty by free enterprise since 1980. But will you ever see this in the Washington Post or on MSNBC? Of course not. It's far easier to whine about inequality.
How have citizens been treated under communist rule? The landmark work, "The Black Book of Communism," eloquently and comprehensively addresses this. According to editor Stephane Courtois, "Communist regimes are responsible for more deaths than any other political ideal or movement." How many? One hundred million humans massacred, starved and executed, including 65 million in China.
Surely the "leading" Marxist murderer was Pol Pot, whose minions slaughtered the most-educated and accomplished 20% of Cambodians in 1975. The Killing Fields represented the zenith of Red genocide and should have served as an epitaph for the monstrosities of Marxism for all time.
But paradoxically, leftism is stronger than ever today. Throughout Western societies the welfare state keeps expanding, socialism dominates the colleges and permeates the media, while laissez-faire capitalism is held in low repute. No matter that after 15 years of socialism once-prosperous Venezuela is a ruined economy. A century after the Bolshevik Revolution, far-leftists Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn are rock stars.
So let's all salute the communists and wish them a well-deserved Happy 100th Anniversary.

Martini,
An interesting perspective on "Britain's position in the present world".
Especially in its past role of fighting for Europe.

Not forgetting this gentleman, complete with facial scars and missing eyebrow, from wounds sustained at the 'Battle of the Nile'.
The injuries to the Royal Navy's most famous hero, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, were caused by flying metal during the battle.
There are some who think, that if he was alive now and in charge of Brexit, we'd be out of the EU already and with them owing us tons and tons of money.

Manuel,
I learnt to distinguish between the past and present a long time ago and realise although one should learn from the past often is it is wiser not try to reincarnate it as some are wishing to do.

Have a read of "As Trump fawns over Xi, global politics is now a ‘strong man’ game"

Remembering the fallen from the last great wars is one thing but looking back at what they left behind is another.
The Channel Islands - The Germans occupied the Islands as we all know, many Islanders collaborated with them, for which they received rich rewards being paid in German Marks. The British Government changed all those ill gotten German Marks for British Pounds without question at the end of the war, leaving behind the most corrupt interdependent outpost of the Queens legislators that hold power in the form of the Crown Officers and as the Speaker of their Parliament, ensuring the secrets and corrupt and criminal activities, are not only hidden but actively promoted around the world, by way of denial of being a Tax Haven and actively promoting Tax Avoidance.
Jersey, being the worst of all, as can be seen by the reports following the Child Abuse Inquiry that was launched, as it seems to have provided a cover to whitewash the actions of those in Power.
The UK Government needs to take direct control, remove the Governor and Bailiff and Judges from their posts and ask why they are so desperate to hang on to power. Do the Government and Crown fear what may come to light? Are those dark days of occupation for the honest hardworking Islanders, who suffered under the rule of the Germans that worked with the elite Islanders any better off for all the riches that tax haven wealth has brought to the rich?
Mr. Gordon Brown is right, close these parasitic havens down and stop them doing deals with the rich and powerful that care nothing about human rights.

I have nothing against getting rid of parasites, we have more than enough hiding in the woodwork, but why didn't Gordon Brown do it when he had many years to do so? Maybe its all to do with promoting a book.

Yeah always makes me laugh when some ex PM or Chancellor comes out with crap like that after having the chance to do something about themselves but choosing not to.
He was probably too busy flogging all our gold at knock down prices.

You just got to read this, to see how desperate the Bailiff and his brother are to hold onto political power.
https://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2017/11/13/states-to-debate-bailiffs-dual-role/
Anyone of the States Assembly that are not part of the establishment should ask themselves WHY do they want to continue with this double roll, Why are they not happy to separate their rolls in the Judicial from their political rolls?
Will they be paid less? NO
Will they be less able to control their destiny? YES
Will the Crown officers be able to control the Police if they are removed from Political Power?
Would the House of Parliament allow the Queen to appoint a speaker to control the house, and prevent elected members speaking, and being parties to having them jailed?
It is not about Gordon Brown, it is about the whole rotten establishment from the Queen down.
The vultures circle Appleby along with leading Accountants that use these offshore Islands to enrich themselves at the expense of other Tax Payers.
