Referendum : to be in Europe or not to be ?, that is the question ! (REF)

required field - 03 Feb 2016 10:00

Thought I'd start a new thread as this is going to be a major talking point this year...have not made up my mind yet...(unlike bucksfizz)....but thinking of voting for an exit as Europe is not doing Britain any good at all it seems....

From George Osborne's 'Evening Standard' at:

Jacob Rees-Mogg claims 'irresponsible' government 'wasn't prepared' for Brexit

Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg admits that the government had no plan in place for the British people voting to leave the EU

Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg made the admission that the Government did not have a plan in place for Brexit while hosting a live question and answer session on LBC radio this morning.

During a discussion on Brexit, a caller asked the conservative MP if prior to the 2016 referendum, the government had considered what would happen if Brexit went ahead.

Mr Rees-Mogg, who was on the Treasury Select Committee at the time of the referendum, said he did not think the government had considered leaving the EU and they did not plan for it.

“I think they thought if they admitted they were preparing for a leave vote, it would have boosted the leave vote.” He said.

He went on to say that he believed the government behaved irresponsibly.

“They were so obsessed with their own propaganda that they were very irresponsible in their approach to government," he said.

When asked who he thought was responsible for the apparent lack of planning, he said:

“It was a political decision rather than a Civil Service decision. I don’t think on this occasion one can blame the Civil Service.”

Rees-Mogg said that former Prime Minister, David Cameron, “specifically told them [senior mandarins] not to [plan for Brexit].”

He said he believed that not planning for a leave vote was part of the Remain campaign’s “project of fear,” to prevent the public from voting to leave the EU.

The Tory MP said that he predicted that the country would vote to leave, but was not in a position to influence whether or not the Government made any preparations.

Ha! Ha! that last line is more akin to Corbyn's Labour Party, just ask the students.

Vic, I was trying to redress the balance of Fred's 'hate the Tories' mantra, as you say

Dil - 23 Oct 2017 14:25 - 7959 of 12628

How do you know you won't like it Fred ?

Brexit is happening so go with the flow and see what happens.

Fred1new - 23 Oct 2017 15:01 - 7960 of 12628

I like to know where I am going and also like to keep my eyes and ears open when I am travelling along any path.

So far the flow seems to take me towards a waterfall with a rocky bottom out in the wilderness.

Another enlightening remark is that one set of regulations will be replaced by numerous other sets of regulations. So much for governing ourselves", but abiding by standards of other country.

Deregulation was partially responsible for the 2008-2010 chaos and the financial gambling around it.

Many of those who are shouting Brexit are the same gamblers or are already leaving town.

Not the country I would like for my grandchildren, but they can emigrate.

Did anyone tell you where you was going when you signed up for the "common market"?

Did anyone tell you the goal was a United States of €urope, with Germany in charge?

Stan - 23 Oct 2017 15:22 - 7962 of 12628

Little Englander alert!

Martini - 23 Oct 2017 15:32 - 7963 of 12628

Stan do try to articulate more than repetitive one liners.

Take a lead from Fred, who I don't agree with on many things, but is capable of posting a reasoned argument even if it is littered with put downs of those he considers less intelligent and experienced than he.

Stan - 23 Oct 2017 15:46 - 7964 of 12628

And another one.

Haystack - 23 Oct 2017 16:23 - 7965 of 12628

Stan
Martini is far more likely post a reasoned argument than you. In fact I have never read one from you about anything. You just indulge in playground taunts.

Fred1new - 23 Oct 2017 16:35 - 7966 of 12628

Max,

I hitchhiked down to Marseille and Cassi in about 1956 and met up with other students of about the same age but with differing political views/interest.

I must admit I was sceptical of a United States of Europe then, but it was being voiced at that time. And continued to be voiced by many until the present.

Likewise, I hitched hike to the World Fair in Brussels and spoke with students of many nationalities (including some from the Commonwealth and again "United Europe" was being voiced.

It was a period of left of centre socialism and detente in student and other organisations and a feeling of optimism existed.

Students of other countries wanted to mix and appeared friendly, and helped others to travel or work "abroad".

I must admit I had been rather insular and possibly quite a large little Welshman until that period.

I admit that mixing and discussing with other nationalities made be realise the victors of WW2 had much in common with other Europeans as well as other nationalities.

My opinion has not changed.

Perhaps, as far as Germany being the leader of Europe is concerned, it may be the rest of the Europe is in agreement with what the say and do.

They don't appear to be trying to tear up contracts as frequently as others.

He's your bitch Freda, come on sort him out. :0)

VICTIM - 23 Oct 2017 16:38 - 7968 of 12628

He , Stan is just a total and seasoned Pisstaker , no doubt about it ,and his boss is a dreamer who dreams up endless claptrap just to annoy .

Stan - 23 Oct 2017 17:24 - 7969 of 12628

Well after that predictable response...it's time for another one thats oh so true.

2517GEORGE - 23 Oct 2017 17:33 - 7970 of 12628

I read somewhere that interest rates in Germany should be 6.2% according to some theory (Taylor's I think). If that's the case then German inflationary pressure is building.

Well, as Mandy Rice Davies more famously remarked " he would say that wouldn't he?"
It is in his interest but not ours.
