Loaded the free version and it does seem faster than AVG. Only downside I see so far is that you cannot schedule (without a rather complicated work around) a regular scan in the free one.

When you look at an IP addresses, what part of it represents the country?

For instance in this particular Indonesian address

118.97.48.225

Does 118 represent the country or is that too generalised? Might it perhaps include the whole region?

If so, what about 118.97.*.*? I'd like to find a simple way to block a whole country without having to go through all the ranges if possible.

Western Digital Passport Harddrive USB, I use for backups etc just checked one of my directories and content not showing, however if I click properties for that directory it says its got 54gb in it, how do I see this, and all other directories seem to be there and showing up ok

Windows did an update which now, means I got now sound only from videos, nothing else I can hear

Check the full volume control and make sure that none of the various sound sections are muted.

It's not as simple as that, unfortunately - while large IP blocks are typically allocated to national authorities, they're not all single ranges.

Howver, have a look at http://www.blockacountry.com/htaccess.php, which might be able to give you enough information for what you want

I hadn't realised that it was possible to do it directly through editing the htaccess file. I'd previously been trying to do it through the cpanel which meant entering umpteen different ranges one by one and would be very time consuming to do it all.

Thanks rg, but I think PeerGuardian is probably something different. I actually wanted to deny people from a whole country (or two) access to a website and needed to ascertain their IP ranges in a simple way which wasn't too time consuming.

Hil, as zzaxx99 says, it's not that simple. Organizations and companies like mine that have been connected to the Internet from the days before ISPs often were allocated their own netblocks where are entirely non-geographic. We've got three Class 'C' netblocks.

For example, if you do a lookup on ist.co.uk you'll arrive at an IP of 192.35.198.230. This is in the middle of a Class C netblock 192.35.198.0/255 which is allocated to ISTLDCNET. The IP block is routed to our data centre in the UK, but it could as easily be re-routed by us to our California facility.

The Block-a-country link that zzaxx provided was, I thought, really helpful. I'd previously obtained a list of the ranges from a different website yesterday, but I didn't know how to implement them other than inputting them one by one through the cpanel. This would have clearly taken ages as this list is many lines long and it prompted my question yesterday to enquire if the list could be simplified with wildcard characters in any way.

What I had overlooked was that the list could be simply copied and pasted into the .htaccess file in a matter of seconds.

I know that anyone can route through a different server if they wish and I'm never going to stop that. I'm not even worried about it. Zzaxx's method is good enough to stop the vast majority of scavengers dead in their tracks.

This database seems to have been updated more recently than the Blockacountry one.
