Anybody with ideas about a good charting package

washlander - 04 May 2004 17:00

I am looking for a good package that uses maths instead of pixels especially as I am interested in candle sticks. Would have to allow me to establish my own parameters. Much appreciated in advance.

Hi washlander. If i Interpret Your note then you must be day trading in real time so you will screen your candidates and then pick up real time feed from the exchanges and wait for the signals in which to trade. To do this you will need to pay for access to something like esignal and have a broadband connection, you can probably do it on a slow modem not sure thoughth.

Just in case I have got it wrong and you work during the day the other method is end of day. In this case you download all data ( at about 2000hrs )and then get omnitrader to backtest the results. To download information takes about 15 mins and then to run the backtest can take 30 - 50mins, this time can vary as it depends on how many shares you load into the data base and what stratergies you are running. You then click on the sort and hey presto you have your best candidates according to the stratergies you have set up. Then a few checks just to make sure the market is not going to throw you a curve ball and you are ready to place your bets next day. You can set stratergies for short term trades 1-4 weeks or longer term 4 weeks plus. The stratergies will also identify possible swing, breakouts, trending, etc. opportunities.

The real time version does the same but backtests all the time.

The one good point for omnit is the game mode which allows you use real data to see how you would have faired using you stratergies in real life, you can do this for a single share or a portfolio as you would in real life without losing money.

As far as data feeds go the costs depend on what you want, for end of day the prices start from 15 month up to 20 this is what I use and gives all equities with mk cap of 50m, indices, currencies, UK commoditites and 500 misc stocks. If you want the full monty which adds the US stocks and bits and pieces that will cost 25month. Live feeds sorry can not help but I think they can cost up to 200 you need to check that out.

I think this is a good package easy to set up and easy to use and is what I use, I can say it paid me back my costs in one week, but as you will understand that is not a gaurentee and could just have been my luck on that week. It does give consitent returns of good candidates but in the end it is what you decide and what stratergies you use...there is no holy grail.

If you want to go further the I suggest you contact
Signal Trader in London 020 7352 8179 and speak to Chris. They are the Uk distributors and also provide data feed. Chris also deals so the backup is good.

One other package is trend signal but that costs a lot about 1200 for end of day and 3k for real time + data feeds, I have looked at this but not sure at present, Zarif uses this and you can find him on the Dj thread. All depends on what you trade how you trade and how long you have been trading.

Hope that helps, lol and let us know what you decide. KA

You can get end of day quotes from http://www.downloadquotes.com for about 70
per year - E100 (Euros).

Edit: I've just checked: 7.95 Euros p.m. or if you buy a whole year at once you
get two months free.
You also get the World Indeces free.

I use this service and it is excellent.
