Hilary

How random do you want it?

I use an Excel spreadsheet that will generate any sort of string that you want, It uses the random function in Excel so it may not be totally random but then nothing is.

hilary - 06 May 2009 13:31 - 8025 of 11003

6.33e+49 keys should just about suffice, Opti.

:o)

Thanks for your help although I was hoping for a ready built application that I could just keep to hand on my desktop without needing to run something like Excel. In the meantime I've found a Javascript keygen by Warewolflabs which covers a variety of string lengths. I've doctored the source so that it just generates 32 character strings and saved it as a HTML page so my problem is now solved in the short term.

I'd still be interested if anybody comes across a desktop keygen though.

Cue Doc. :o)

My spreadsheet uses an applet written in Excel VB or whatever it's called. If you are any good at VB it should be easy enough to detach it from the spreadsheet and run it standalone.

Hils

Try http://www.kingsley-hughes.com/pc-zone/security/wep.php#random

hilary - 06 May 2009 15:11 - 8028 of 11003

Thanks Opti. If it's OK, I'll bear that in mind and give you a shout if I need it.

In the meantime, this is the keygen whose script I've used to suit my own needs.

hilary - 06 May 2009 15:13 - 8029 of 11003

Thanks Doc, but that's the Warewolf Labs version that I've already modified.

edit: Although it suggests that it's downloadable, you just get a webpage and there's no desktop application as such.

WEP can be cracked in a few minutes irrespective of the key length. WPA and its variants with long keys are virtually impossible to crack.

ExecLine - 06 May 2009 16:26 - 8031 of 11003

Hmmm? True. Tried it for myself. Same thingy.

Well, here's another Free Password Generator that's for generating passwords 1-32 symbols in length.

It also allows the elimination of dubious characters. Hmmm? Can't be true because it didn't exclude me and I found it fairly easily.

I know, Haystack. But this is for product registration/activation with NIC MAC address locking. And if I haven't added a product key to the database in the first place, they can crack as long as they like but it won't get them anywhere.

In that respect, 32 characters is OTT.

Apropos of nothing....

On a photographic site someone has just suggested to speed up their browsing:-

Try this:
In IE, go Tools > Options > Security > Resticted Sites > Sites
Add “http://*.doubleclick.net."

Seems to work on that site and also here - and that's using Opera and not IE.

Could be imagination, but still worth a quick try chums.

How do I install windows, if I cant bootup anything with out it crashing blue screen, or keeps getting missing files when setup starts to install from cd directory, is it time to get Windows 7

jeffmack - 07 May 2009 12:11 - 8035 of 11003

Had a problem with a Dell laptop about 3 months ago when it was a month out of warranty. Decided to get it sorted yesterday and called Dell. It is a known problem with the graphic chip being too close to something hot on the M/B so the display goes funny. They are sending an engineer today to replace the M/B free of charge and with 5 year warranty.

As long as the engineer arrives on time this afternoon service from Dell has been excellent.

RG

Do you mean that you are booting the computer from the Windows setup CD and getting the blue screen crash?

Richgit69 - 07 May 2009 16:53 - 8037 of 11003

Optimist,

I got infected with the virus I got a few weeks ago from my main PC, tried to boot in safe mode, dos boot and last know config etc none of them worked, so tried to install the XP windows the came with the pc, it started great then it kept saying cant find file in disk, please select directory to install from, this keeps going on and on for lots and lots of files, then it tries to start windows xp to finish installaltion and I get the blue screen saying drives are missing for different devices

All I want to try and do is install a Windows to try and get a PC back up and running but I cant get it to the PC try run any software with out thes problems

Optimist - 07 May 2009 17:01 - 8038 of 11003

If you have booted the computer from the setup disk and it still crashes then you must have a hardware fault.

Seymour Clearly - 07 May 2009 18:09 - 8039 of 11003

Have you tried a complete reformat of the HD, then re-install from that? If you still get the blue screen then it's def a hardware fault.

Haystack - 07 May 2009 18:18 - 8040 of 11003

Do you mean that you are trying to install from an XP installation copy that resides on your hard disk or are you using a CD?

Richgit69 - 07 May 2009 19:10 - 8041 of 11003

Optimist, sometimes I get hardware fault error when it tries to install and does a reboot to install more windows files

Seymour Clearly, havnt do a reformat yet trying to keep as much as my data as possible.

Haystack, I am using the Windows XP CD that came with the PC

Optimist - 07 May 2009 19:57 - 8042 of 11003

RG

Are you booting the machine from the CD or running it from within Windows?

Richgit69 - 07 May 2009 22:05 - 8043 of 11003

Optimist, booting from CD, cant get any from Windows or any other access to be able to use PC
