Jeffers dear boy, CONGRATULATIONS & HAPPY BIRTHDAY
May your lum always reek and your cup floweth over.
You're only as old as the woman that you feel.
A leg-end in your own lunchtime.
May your horses jump like you wish you could, may they gush at the end, finish with a spurt and win with a length in hand....Willie the Bard.

Jeff..lol..It comes with years of experience; the slow realisation that knowing good bloodstock, bloodlines, studying form, trainers, jockeys, owners and yards in form all count for 'sod all' and the fact that your missus either likes a particular jockeys 'toothy grin' or 'a lucky number' and comes away with a profit from her 'once a year punt' whilst you, my birthday boy are likely to be skint and gutted. Sounds familiar?
Don't give up the day job...lw

LW, Jeff,
My mother does the horses to the extent of it being an integral part of her life. Religiously on a Saturday morning she'll pick through her runners before phoning her bets through to her bookie. She'll only bet 1 or 2 at a time and, whilst it'll never make her rich, she doesn't bet enough to make her poor either. She does a lot of place pots and accumulators. Funnily enough, she has had some decent wins over the years. 15 or 16 years ago she won enough to take me and my sister off to Rhodes for a couple of weeks. She's in her element this week with Cheltenham.
Personally, it doesn't interest me at all. Whenever I go anywhere near a horse it leaves a pile of steaming near my feet.
