PC & MAC CLINIC - On line problem solving. (CPU)

Opt,

I had Diskeeper Pro.

Diskeeper kept hanging/stopping after it had analysed around 24% of the drive. I was alerted to a potential problem when, on looking in the first time, I saw as much red as all the other colours on a drive that is only about 33% full anyway.

That was when I tried to re-run the analyse report.

I could not use the Vista defrag without uninstalling Diskeeper. I've now used the Vista version and it seem the fragmentation is around 1%, but it's jolly hard to see the command exe report as it closes the DOS box after less than 5 seconds.

EDIT. Until you realise you should run it from the DOS box rather than from Start. Now I see have 256 fragmented files on C and just 1 on I. Seems I can live with the Vista defrag. Better as I did feel that Diskeeper was taking resources and I can let Vista do the job with a weekly schedule.

... simply find "8308" ...

I just fired up Windows Live photo Gallery. It will do that - very quickly!

ThePublisher - 25 May 2009 14:36 - 8110 of 11003

Opt,

Never thought of using that. I'll give it a try later this afternoon.

Thanks,

TP

Opt,

I assumed that Windows Search would find a sequential group of characters in a file name. I was keying in 8308. No luck. You're not telling me to use the inverted commas are you?

If I key in c04t8308 it works.

My jury is out when I try *8308*. It seems to work sometimes and not others.

The Photo Gallery seems to be following the same lines.

In reality I can, in future, key in enough of the start of the filename to be conclusive. It just caught me off guard as a Search in something like word will pick up anything that contains the characters you have picked.

Exec.
I've just seen your post 21st May. Have you used Re image?
Would you recommend?
Edit: Oh. It's alright, I've just seen the price. :-))))

ThePublisher - 25 May 2009 17:28 - 8113 of 11003

Bolshi,

I'm far from being rich enough not to need to watch the pennies but...

It depends on how much value you put on your time. With my mediocre computer skills I reckon it takes me the best part of a day to migrate my software and data from an old PC to a new one.

Forty quid, and most of the day back, seems worth it. If it works.

TP.

I upgraded some software on Thursday, It has taken 8hours to sort my network and printers out.

I am a little p.off with upgrades. Will I never learn to leave them in the box.

MightyMicro - 25 May 2009 21:10 - 8115 of 11003

Fred, I sympathise.

The continual forced upgrades from Microsoft -- which often break things -- are a pain. But you have to take them in the name of "security".

I run a software company. As a point of principle, we continue to support older versions of our products. Users sometimes have very good reasons for not installing the latest version of our products.

How do I find or change my Netgear Wireless Passphrase, as it was over two year ago I set it up, but yesterday I finally got my second pc up and running and now trying to connect to internet but cant as passphrase is wrong ;-(

Optimist - 01 Jun 2009 08:44 - 8119 of 11003

Log onto your netgear router and click on wireless settings.

Richgit69 - 01 Jun 2009 10:41 - 8120 of 11003

Optimist,

I think I logged in using 192.168.1.1 website, it as the passphrase but I can't see it just blackholes for letters, if I enter a new one will it be instant and will my Netgear still work with out me doing anything to it

Optimist - 01 Jun 2009 11:29 - 8121 of 11003

RG

If you enter a new passphrase, it will become active as soon as you save it. You will have to enter the same passphrase in any computers that you want to connect using WiFi.

The safest way to connect to a router when making WiFi settings changes is to use a network cable.

-- ThePublisher,

Windows Search is abysmal - have a look at Effective File Search - http://www.sowsoft.com/search.htm. At $30 a copy, it's not cheap, but older versions are often available for nothing on PC Pro cover disks. Current version is 6.something. I'm happily using 2.1.4.

Richgit69 - 01 Jun 2009 12:31 - 8123 of 11003

Optimist, thats the main reason I might have to enter a new passphrase because the one I got, I used a song title with a few missing words and used capitals and small letters, but everytime I enter it on other computer it says no

Update
Thought I'd sorted out other PC but now it seems to bring up a blue screen memory dump error or reboots itself when nothing is happening B***** B**** B***

Thanks zz,

I'll have a look.

KEAYDIAN - 01 Jun 2009 16:30 - 8125 of 11003

Hi tech peeps.

I set up a desktop pc last night that's been in storage for about 2 years.

Everythign seems tiickerty boo, except the cd r drive, which doesn't want to open. It's as if it's got jammed.

Any quick fix solutions?

Mega Bucks - 01 Jun 2009 16:38 - 8126 of 11003

@KEAYDIAN a paperclip straightened out and pushed into the little round hole in the opening flap normally does the trick that is the way to open it.
