THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

Or it could be that they are paying by Direct Debit and are tucked up in homes for the old and have no idea that they are still paying for a B&W TV Licence, even though they may not even own one.

What a great Christmas add from Iceland - because it has been banned I guess it will get more publicity. Well done Iceland.

Banned by whom and for what?

ExecLine - 09 Nov 2018 15:15 - 81314 of 81564

The video clip ends with Iceland telling viewers they are chopping out from their shelves all products which contain palm oil.

Why?

The implication was, that to obtain palm oil it costs the planet the lives of 25 orangutans every day.

The orangutans are three extant species of great apes native to Indonesia and Malaysia.

Orangutans are currently only found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans were originally considered to be one species. Not so.

Below are 10 things that contain palm oil that most of us probably buy without realising this fact:

1. BREAD
Most loaves of bread you buy at the supermarket will contain palm oil (or one of the many other names palm oil is referred to as – see the link at the bottom of this post!). Next time you go for your weekly shop, check the ingredients carefully, or even better – buy bread from the counter or a local baker and check what ingredients they use!

2. CRISPS
It makes sense that making crisps requires some kind of oil, but sadly most of them use palm oil. The packet will likely say ‘vegetable oil’ though, so be aware (this is another commonly used name for Palm Oil). The best thing is to look for crisps that expressly use an oil like olive, sunflower or coconut, or find savoury crunchy snacks that don’t contain any oil at all!

3. MARGARINE
Margarine is a commonly used substitute for butter and dairy spreads, but even though you’re doing a good thing by avoiding the dairy industry, most of these products contain palm/vegetable oil. Try substituting margarine in recipes with coconut oil, olive oil, or even apple sauce for baking. (And if anyone ever finds a margarine that doesn’t contain palm oil, please let me know – because I can’t find one!)

4. VEGAN CHEESE
Same as above, many of the dairy substitutes sadly seem to contain palm oil in some form. Keep an eye out on the ingredients and shop sustainably; many vegan cheeses come in plastic packaging and contain loads of random additives anyway, so maybe try making your own vegan cheese sauces and trying out recipes!

5. SOAP
Random isn’t it? Many supermarket soaps seem to contain palm oil for some reason, but good to buy from local artisans, or brands that use only natural ingredients who don’t test on animals, anyway.

6. ICE CREAM
I have no idea why there needs to be palm oil in ice cream… weird! Not all brands do, so always check the label. I would say try making your own (vegan or not ), and props if you have time for this, but to me it seems like too much effort (but hey, I’m not a huge ice cream fan anyway!).

7. PIZZA BASES
Many supermarket oven pizzas or readymade pizza bases contain palm/vegetable oil in the base. I know, it made me sad too. But again, check the label because not all will – just something to be aware of!

8. INSTANT NOODLES
Noooo! A staple for all budgeters and quick-lunch-addicts alike, vegan or otherwise :( We all know they’re probably not great for our health anyway, but it is disappointing. And yes, this includes Supernoodles, Pot Noodles and Tesco Instant.

9. SHAMPOO
As with the soap mentioned above, it’s a great idea to try and support ethical/environmental brands when buying personal care/beauty products anyway. Places like Lush and the Body Shop are good places to start.

10. CHOCOLATE
Palm oil in chocolate is a more rare occurrence, but still something to check on the ingredients labels. It can be easy to avoid, so why buy it by accident right?

Palm oil and its derivatives can appear under many names. For consumers concerned about the catastrophic ill effects of the palm industry, here’s what to look for.

Palm oil is the most popularly used vegetable oil in the world. It is remarkably versatile and is used in everything from snack food and shampoo to biofuel. It is so prevalent that it can be found in around half of packaged items in most supermarkets.

Palm oil and its derivatives can appear under more names than just “palm oil.” While some of these ingredients listed by WWF – like vegetable oil – aren’t always made from palm oil, they can be:

1. Elaeis guineensis
2. Etyl palmitate
3. Glyceryl
4. Hydrogenated palm glycerides
5. Octyl palmitate
6. Palm fruit oil
7. Palm kernel
8. Palm kernel oil
9. Palm stearine
10. Palmate
11. Palmitate
12. Palmitic acid
13. Palmitoyl oxostearamide
14. Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-3
15. Palmityl alcohol
16. Palmolein
17. Sodium kernelate
18. Sodium laureth sulfate
19. Sodium lauryl lactylate/sulphate
20. Sodium lauryl sulfate
21. Sodium palm kernelate
22. Stearate
23. Stearic acid
24. Vegetable fat
25. Vegetable oil

I thought it was only own brands that would no longer contain palm oil.

ExecLine - 10 Nov 2018 11:19 - 81316 of 81564

You may well be right, Dil.

I'll check on that.

'Tax on age' to pay for social care being considered for the over-40s

By Edward Malnick, Whitehall Editor
10 November 2018 • 9:29pm

A new levy targeted at the over-40s is being considered by ministers to help solve the social care funding crisis.

Matt Hancock, the Health and Social Care Secretary, told the Telegraph he was “attracted to” a cross-party plan for a compulsory premium deducted from the earnings of the middle-aged and over-65s to fund the cost of their care in later life.

The proposals, set out by two Commons committees, are based on the system in Germany under which all workers over 40 pay 2.5 per cent of their wages into a pot formally earmarked for social care.

By Telegraph Reporters
11 November 2018 • 7:34am

David Miliband is reportedly poised to return to the UK as speculation mounts that he is being encouraged to lead a new Blairite centre-left party.

The former Labour Foreign Secretary currently lives and works in New York, where he runs the International Rescue Committee.

However, Labour MPs reportedly believe he is ready to move back to the UK next year.

Mr Miliband has held a series of meetings with Tony Blair, the Mail on Sunday reported, with the former prime minister said to be the driving force behind plans for the new centrist party.

Mr Miliband has also met with prominent Labour donors Sir Trevor Chinn and Jonathan Goldstein, according to the newspaper.

all markets now looking ever more weak to bleak
i confess i am now thinking that the odds on a snap GE are shortening sharply

Fred1new - 12 Nov 2018 12:40 - 81322 of 81564

Well, Well, Well!

Are you packing your bags for the Channel Isles, Cayman Isles or Panama?

cynic - 12 Nov 2018 12:42 - 81323 of 81564

why would i?
stupid boy!

in fact, if there is a GE within the next few months, my betting would be for yet another hung parliament
unfortunately, i fear the turnout will be depressingly low - it has not been that good for at least a decade or two - which tends to allow zealots of all hues to garner more votes than warranted

KidA - 12 Nov 2018 13:05 - 81324 of 81564

No point voting, we are left with direct action.

Fred1new - 12 Nov 2018 13:13 - 81325 of 81564

With luck, if that happened there "may be" a coalition government, with a few honest politicians sitting down at a table and appraising their "responsibilities" to the country as a whole and reviewing their policies and "Brexit".

If you haven't seen the program already, have a look at the series "World War 1 in colour" shown on SELECT channel.

Food for thought at the stupidity and false "pride" of politicians and various "elites".

KidA - 12 Nov 2018 13:42 - 81326 of 81564

Seen plenty of WW1, WW2, and the EU. Is it a case of the latter being unable to fathom they are largely responsible for the rise of the extremes or is it that they just can't accept their part?

Cheers,
KidA

cynic - 12 Nov 2018 14:41 - 81327 of 81564

who would you suggest for your cabinet then fred?

more to the point, even if "they" managed to speak and act altruistically - hahahaha! - what deal do you think they could or would dream up that would actually be accepted, not only by the EU plutocrats (who are intrinsically at least as self-serving and crooked as any), and would also be accepted with open arms by the UK population at large?

Fred1new - 12 Nov 2018 15:56 - 81328 of 81564

Manuel.

See Referendum : to be in Europe or not to be ?, that is the question ! (REF)

iturama - 12 Nov 2018 16:26 - 81329 of 81564

Don't ask Fred for an answer C. He only does questions and problems. He bangs on about stupid politicians and "elites" being responsible for WW1, then suggests putting together a coalition of "a few honest politicians", no doubt elites also, to do god knows what. The rest doesn't make sense.
Fred, in this country you still have to have a parliamentary majority to govern, cabals don't cut it, except in the likes of Venezuela. It was a clear majority of the people that decided to leave; now that is democracy in action in the face of the politicians and the "elites" who want otherwise. Get over it.
