In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google announced late Tuesday that it is developing an operating system for PCs based on its Chrome Web browser. In a post on its company blog, Google said the operating system would initially be aimed at netbooks, the compact, low-cost computers that have turned the PC world on its head. It said the open-source software, called Chrome OS, would be available in the second half of next year.
This will give Google an unprecedented opportunity to ramp up their collection and analysis of personal data.
Unfortunately, there will be many people who either hate Microsoft or are too stupid to care about Googles methods, so there will be a significant take up of this Trojan Horse.
On the plus side, by the time it comes out, Windows 7 should be established as a viable OS for netbooks for the more discerning people.
I tend to agree with Optimist. MS seem to have little interest in personal data. Google is essentially a sales and marketing company with different intent.
Whenever you are shopping for something on the Internet, you might like to try using the Google Shopping Tool. You will see this as a link off the main Google.co.uk site.
You can also arrange the list of results in price order too. Here's what I got for the Logitech MX Revolution mouse and you can see the cheapest are available from several suppliers at or around 'under 30':
fiddling around on an old PC (XP loaded )
The screen res is only 640x 480 in Display properties - setting tab
also it says "deault monitor" just above it...and does not allow me to use the "slider" to alter it....
How can I get out of the default to ramp up the resolution?
Sounds as if your hardware or graphics card won't go any higher. Does it have on-board graphics or a separate graphics card? How old is the machine. Is it still attached to the original monitor?
It sounds like the drivers for your display adaptor are not loaded properly.
Try going into device manager, uninstalling the display adaptor and restarting the computer. With luck, it will find the new hardware and install the drivers.
If that doesn't work, you will have to download the drivers for your adaptor.

My computer started playing up on Monday (July 6) in that it opened up and then immediately shut down. I got it up and running again using Acronis Restore from a backup done on July 3, the last available backup. I now can't find photographs that were downloaded from the camera (and deleted from the the memory stick, of course!) on July 5. Is there any hope of finding them or are they lost forever?

You should be able to get them back using undelete software either on your computers hard disk or the memory stick. I'm guessing that the Acronis restore has basically reformatted your disk so recovering the pictures from there could be difficult though not impossible.
First remove the memory stick from the camera to prevent any changes being made to it.
Try to leave your computer switched off in case you need to attempt recovery from that, to do so will involve some special software - I think I paid around 30 - and you will have to mount the hard disk on another machine.
Undeleting pictures from the memory stick is straight forward. Do a Bing search for "undelete pictures" and you have loads of choice. You should be able to find a program that lets you try before you buy.
