How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

WOODIE - 30 Jan 2006 18:14 - 8354 of 10502

i might be going mad as is has been a long day can someone look at the reply from betfair i received earlier Dear Michael

Thank you for your e-mail.

The dead heat rules are worked out based on the number of people tied
divided by the positions available.

In this case there were 4 tied for 4th which as the market was for
top 5 means 2 positions covered. 2 positions / 4 players is worked
out the same as a dead heat between 2 players.

If for example there were 5 players it would have been worked out on
2/5.

In golf the next best placed finishers would have been classed as
officially finishing 8th and therefore not in the top 5.
i feel this is incorrect and not the same as high street bookies the event was the golf 5 places market in the buick there were 4 tied for 4th place.HELP PLEASE

Fundamentalist - 30 Jan 2006 18:49 - 8355 of 10502

Woodie

Personally think the above is correct and that should have been paid out a place on half your stake on anyone who finished on -9 (Kaye, Rollins, Glover or Mickelson). the rules basically mean that Woods, Green and Olly filled the first 3 of the 5 available places and the remaining 2 places were filled by the 4 ties players.

What are you expecting - to be paid at 5/7 as 7 players filled the 5 positions? if so this is incorrect imo

From betfair rules (go to help and do a search on deat heat)

What happens if there is a dead heat?
A dead heat is calculated by dividing the stake proportionally between the number of winners in the event. So, in a two-way dead heat (2 winners) for example, your return will be half of what it could have been. This can be referred to as half-face value of the bet, or a bet for half the original stake.

For example:

Initial bet = 30 @ 11 (1 expected winner - 2 dead heat for first)

Half-face value of ticket: 30 @ 11 divided by 2 = 165

or

Half-stake: 15 @ 11 winning bet = 165

The profit of the bet equals the total return minus total stake: 165 - 30.00 = 135

When there are multiple payouts, this can get quite confusing.

In a golf tournament, Tiger Woods wins, Vijay Singh finishes second, Phil Mickelson third, but five players tie for fourth. This creates a multiple dead-heat for fourth and fifth place.

So in this case, if you backed Luke Donald for 5 at 10.0 for a Top 5 finish and he finished in the tied group of players, you would receive

Stake x Odds x No. of Payouts / No. of Tied runners = 5 x 10.0 x 2 / 5 = 20

WOODIE - 30 Jan 2006 19:02 - 8356 of 10502

fundy thanks for in depth answer with a high street bookie they would take 4 out of the 7 that would leave 3 then divide your stake by 3 then settle it for all 4 that finished tied.what they done have appears incorrect the bet i had was lucas glover 100 pound backed at 3.00 what they have credited is 100 pound.

Fundamentalist - 30 Jan 2006 19:14 - 8357 of 10502

woodie - why take 4 out of the 7 not 3 out of the 7 ? that doesnt make sense to me - that would mean they are settling as if one of the 4 tied players had finished 4th on his own

i think your bet should be settled as follows:

2 halfs of 50 each

50 lose
50 at 3.0 = 150

Total = 150-50 = 100

WOODIE - 30 Jan 2006 19:27 - 8358 of 10502

the reason for taking out 4 of the 7 is because the the issue is with the last place 5th position ie 7 finished in the first four take away 4 places that leaves a total of 3 for the last place therefore stake divided by 3.
