I'm not sure that you can have two USBs in the same machine. If you look in the BIOS (type Del on boot) you will probably find an option to disable the motherboard USB ports (might refer to allocating an IRQ address for USB). Try disabling to leave just the new card.

The devices you see are the normal ones for just the motherboard USB.

Gents, reading of all these attacks and hidden spys has made me a tad concerned for my data. I keep my Norton updated but should I look at installing a firewall? If so where can I get one and are there any drawbacks?

Just been down the firewall route after getting attacked the other week.

Zonealarm PRO is the bees-knees at $39, painless installation and very easy to set up. They do have a less functional free version. Zonealarm gets consistently good write-ups both on the other side and in the computer press.

None that I'm aware of, they do have a FAQ page that's worth looking at I think. I've only had it for just over a week, but it just sits there in the background now and checks incoming and outgoing traffic.

I even use a remote VPN that the firewall copes with quite happily, as well as mytrack and downloads from TC2000.

The first time you try to access a remote feed, eg Mytrack, a pop-up appears and you can then allow permanent (or temporary access). Really is very good and intuitive.

Also with the pro version, you can stop those bloody pop-ups you get from some sites and also stop banner ads.

BTW, you can install it on a no cost basis and try it out for free for two weeks if you go for the pro version.

Croc. I had a shock today doing a Norton Ghost back up. Although I have the 2002 boot disk, I recently purchased v.2003 (on-line download) which is easier for a DOS numbskull like me. I also wanted to be sure I could give Symantec a hard time if a fault occurred (not my doing)!

Anyway, I did the image creation steps in Windows (as instructed) and waited for the program to restart into DOS (also as instructed). I then had the message "Boot Disk Failure"! I switched off and on for a number of times but Windows wouldn't appear, just that message.

My mood was black! I went away for an hour and started up again just to see if there was a change (couldn't see why there would be) but the Ghost DOS operation actually functioned on booting up and the image transferred to the other hard drive (this is the TraderPC with 2 hard disks I bought from you last Summer). I then got Windows back as expected. I don't know why that problem happened and it makes me nervous of doing another back-up. Any thoughts?

Biffer, installed the firewall and as you say it's fairly painless. However first of all I couldn't connect to the net (solved this) and now because I have the settings set to block all cookies, animation, advertisments etc... I find I have to log-in everytime I want to view a page on this site. For now I have had to allow cookies again. Did you manage to find away round this?

Youi have to enable cookies to view most sites i think.
I use Norton Internet Security.With that you can set up Exclusions for each site you visit.

Whats blood annoying is it's only this site I seem to have problems with, ADVFN is fine.

This is what i like, buy some software and spent all friggin day trying to make things work!! I can't load certain sites i.e. java feeds even though I have java enabled - anyone any ideas?

heres an error message which i get when trying to load pogo games (chess java) whihc is as a result of the firewall installation:

How to Fix the Problem:
The most common cause of this error occurs when your copy of the applet is corrupted. So the first thing you should do is clear your browser's cache and see if this fixes the problem.

Pull down the Tools menu and choose "Internet Options"
Click on the General tab.
Click on the Delete Files button in the "Temporary Internet Files" section and then click OK when the dialog box appears.

Exit and relaunch Internet Explorer.
You might also need to turn off your Java JIT compiler. Here's how to do that:

Pull down the Tools menu and choose "Internet Options"

After clearing your cache, you need to quit and restart your browser. If you don't quit the browser, your cache will not be completely cleared out.

Mr Euro: I understand how you feel, I really do.....

I've just tried backing up some files by burning them on to a CD. (First effort, folks!) As far as I can tell, the information is now on the CD and I have ticked the box allowing me to read the CD in any CD rom drive. Put in disc, silence, then whirs after about 15 seconds. But nothing comes up. Evenutally it stops whirring.

I've looked under My Computer and it is definitely there, I even have two copies, one in the V and one in the W drive. But how do I read the contents, please .... anybody?

Please don't worry about insulting my intelligence..... that drive is completely empty.
