Press release 16 January 2008

Ultrasis plc

Ultrasis plc signs Opening Doors as distribution partner in New Zealand

Ultrasis (the 'Company') the provider of computer-delivered, interactive
healthcare products and associated services, has entered into an agreement with
Opening Doors Limited, a provider of psychological healthcare services to
communities in New Zealand, under which Opening Doors will act as a distribution
partner for Ultrasis' flagship product, Beating the Blues ('BtB').

Opening Doors will undertake an implementation project, demonstrating Beating
the Blues within four distinct health communities covering a population of some
150,000 people (Manaia Primary Health Organisation, Whangarei, Kiapara Care
Incorporated, Dargaville, Te Tai Tokerau Primary Health Organisation, Kerikeri /
Kiataia and the southern Bay of Islands and Tihewa Mauriora Primary Health
Organisation, Kiakohe). One of the sites, Tihewa Mauriora, Kiakohe, will be
looking specifically at how the programme could help support citizens from the
Maori population and what cultural modifications, if any, may be required in the
future.

The objective of the demonstration will be to show the clinical efficacy and
cost benefits of computerised cognitive behavioural therapy ('cCBT') in the
treatment of anxiety and depression amongst the population of New Zealand.

Tracey Hodgkinson, Director of Opening Doors Limited, commented: 'We have
identified four key sites who wish to participate in this demonstration and are
confident this will provide the evidence for Beating the Blues to become a key
method of relieving the deficits currently being experienced within New
Zealand's healthcare system by improving access to evidence-based treatment for
anxiety and depression.'

Rose Lightfoot, Chief Executive of Te Tai Tokerau Primary Health Organisation,
said:

'As one of the four New Zealand sites participating in the Beating the Blues
computerised cognitive behavioural therapy pilot, we are particularly interested
in assessing the impact on health as we believe it will significantly increase
the range of strategies available to assist clients in self-management and
improved wellbeing.'

Ultrasis considers Beating the Blues especially suitable for providing access to
psychological therapies across large geographical territories where smaller
populations often find access to specialised local healthcare can be severely
restricted. The treatment will prove valuable to those in rural areas located
away from local services. With a shortage of CBT trained therapists in New
Zealand, Beating the Blues will enable rapid access to therapy and help support
healthcare organisations to deliver improved health outcomes.

Ultrasis believes the agreement, while not large in financial terms, is
particularly significant in underpinning BtB's first large-scale demonstration
project in the Southern Hemisphere.

Nigel Brabbins, Chief Executive of Ultrasis, said: 'New Zealand is well known
for its accessible national healthcare system and we see this partnership as a
valuable opportunity to prove that Beating the Blues can be used just as
effectively outside the United Kingdom and has the potential to be adapted to
suit specific cultural needs.'

He added: 'This represents a further step in our international programme,
underlining the potential market for the application of the Beating the Blues
product abroad.'

NICE Depression Guidelines and CCBT Health Technology Appraisals
NICE has today (Jan 18th 2008) announced that it intends to bring forward the computerised cognitive behaviour therapy (cCBT) Health Technology Appraisals (HTA) for depression products so that the timescales are similar to the scheduled update of the NICE guidelines for depression.

The NICE guidelines for depression are intended to be published in September 2009. A major part of this updated guideline will be to incorporate the latest evidence base on the value of cCBT. An update of the HTA will ensure this.

Ultrasis welcomes this proposal as it provides further opportunity for us to inform NICE of our latest research (about, for instance, the effectiveness of Beating the Blues in secondary care environments and in co-morbid conditions). This will ensure that the use of Beating the Blues is allotted its proper prominent place in the treatment of depression and will provide further expanded direction to Primary care trusts (PCTs), psychologists, mental health commissioners and GPs.

cCBT programmes for anxiety will be assessed in tandem with updated NICE guidelines for anxiety at a later date.

The cynics out their may say this share is crap and some may say it not a good time to buy but those of you with Vinson now is a good time to buy you will kick your self .have a read.

Ive put a links on here Worth a read .just a look at what CBT can and will be used for.http://treatmentonline.com/treatments.php

CBT programs for a range of health and wellbeing topics: depression, anxiety, insomnia, stress and pregnancy.
The computerised CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) programs sold by the Wellness Shop are designed to be interactive in that the programs guide users through similar principles as a therapist would. In fact, all the products were designed by expert and/or practising psychologists. The interactive programs adapt to the unique circumstances of each user, help them learn techniques to modify their thinking, and can be used at a pace defined by the user. Computerised CBT is seen to have a number of advantages:

anonymity for the user
highly accessible
can be implemented at an early stage before problems get worse
is built upon an established evidence-based mode of therapy
low cost
can be delivered without the need for trained therapists.

GREETINGS CARDS (April, 2005)
In August 2002 the Trustees committed 50,000 to support the installation of Beating the Blues in two GP practices in West Berkshire. Beating the Blues is produced by Ultrasis plc and uses computerised cognitive behavioural therapy (CCBT) as a treatment for mild to moderated depression. At the time the use of CCBT was subject to assessment by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and it was hoped that this project would contribute to the available evidence. In addition the Trust wished to make a contribution, however modest, to the improvement of treatment available to those suffering from depression.

Beating the Blues was installed by December 2002 and training started in January 2003, both systems were live by April 2003. One system was redeployed in September 2004 in order to make better use of the capacity available. Systems are now located in Falklands, Newbury and the Thatcham Medical Centre and are available on request to all GP practices in West Berkshire. By July 2004 a total of 134 patients had been referred to Beating the Blues of which 33 have completed all 8 sessions, 15 are current and 66 discontinued treatment after one or more sessions Note that many of those who discontinue treatment did so for positive reasons.

Procedures for evaluating the project have been agreed, they will be based on a combination of quantitative evaluation provided by Ultrasis plc, and qualitative evaluation based on investigation of patient and practice staff experience. The evaluation will be conducted over the period of January to November 2005. The Steering Group is in the process of appointing a part-time Research Assistant.

(June, 2005)
A Psychology Research Assistant has been recruited to assist with the evaluation of this project. Nicola Harris will be based at Hillcroft House, West Berkshire Community Hospital, Thatcham and will be employed for one day a week for one year. The next meeting of the Steering Group is on 11th July 2005.

Top
(August, 2005)
The latest statistics show that a total of 249 patients have started the programme with 67 having completed all 8 sessions. Anxiety and depression scores improved progressively from Session 1 onwards. Very few cross referrals have been initiated. An evaluation scheme has been agreed based on a cut-off date for referrals of 30 September 2005. A report will be available in March 2006.

(January, 2006)
Ethical approval for evaluation has been obtained from the Berkshire Research Ethics Committee and the evaluation process has started. The Report is likely to be available in June 2006, later than forecast earlier.

(June, 2006)
The licences funded by CWMT expired at the end of March 2006. Newbury & Community PCT have decided to continue to fund Beating the Blues licences for the two existing practices, and also to purchase an additional Beating the Blues system to take referrals from other practices, which will probably be located at Hillcroft House on the West Berkshire Community Hospital site.

Evaluation data from the pilot project has been collected, including 69 responses to requests for patient feedback, 16 in-depth interviews with system users, and focus groups with staff at both participating practices. Analysis of this data is in progress, but the final report is now due in August 2006.

(February, 2007)
The Report has been finalised and is now available. In outline the Report concluded that Beating the Blues is a useful intervention in Primary Care and appreciated by most users. Improvements are noted, not only by those who complete all eight sessions, but also for those who complete four or more sessions.
User experience and completion rates could be improved by GPs providing more information on referral, by providing more information about use of the programme, by providing more support (possibly through Primary Care MH workers) and by improving access in the evenings and at weekends. These recommendations are being piloted in West Berkshire under arrangements made by the Newbury & Community Primary Care Trust.
