Opt,

Should I be looking at my 'profile'? I saw references to it when I Googled my problem.

Thanks for the advice. I'll pursue it when you give me a view on the above.

TP, I believe if you export outlook .PST files to another back-up .pst file you have facility to block duplication. You can then import the backup files into another .pst under the name you wish without the duplications.

I would make duplicate copies before doing so.

If this fails export both files to "exel", use it facilities for "ordering" or "indexing" and edit out duplicates and re-import back into a .pst file named what you wish.

Yes you need sort_records with an eproc :-)

Klal, I'm using the C4280 photo smart printer and assuming it's only slightly different from a 4580 is very good at all general printing, the only snag I've found with mine is it does'nt like small envelopes to print for my business, the ink cartridges foul up on the envelope. So my trusty 820C still comes in handy. it's also very quick. Cheers BB

Klal - I'm pleased with my Brother MFC465CN bought recently from IJTDirect.co.uk. The deal was the printer came free so long as you bought three sets of compatible inks at a cost of 53.83 plus vat. It's a four-in-one machine with print, fax, scan and copy facilities. I don't work it hard and haven't tried the fax or scan options yet, but printing and copying is fine. I'm just about to replace the black ink for the first time since installation on June 19. Only snag I've come across was one paper jam which was a bit of a pig to sort but it was probably my fault initially for not fanning the paper first. I've deduced how their "free" printer deal works. Normally you would expect a set of branded inks when you buy a printer but these are removed. But it still seems a good deal when checking the price comparison sites.

How many Outlook profiles do you have? My experience with Outlook is that using multiple profiles can cause strange behaviour although that could be due to my in frequent use of that feature.

Outlook likes to have a main Contacts folder which is normally the only one that you need. My guess is that the second contacts folder was created when you upgraded to a new version of Outlook and it copied all of your contact to a new folder. Chances are that the slightly larger one is the current default and the smaller one is all duplicates, but you will have to merge them as I decribed to be sure. Any contacts that you have recently deleted will reapear unless you deleted them from both folders.

Where do I look to see an Outlook profile, please?

Balerboy, ToK - thanks for your thoughts. I'm kinda leaning towards HP 4580 at the moment...have to make up my mind within a coupla hours!

From memory, you can change them in the Mail applet in the Control Panel but if you don't know, then you are not using multiple profiles so you don't need to use it.

Just change your settings from within Outlook.

Thanks ExecLine. The printer you suggest has more features than I will ever use (fax, for instance) and is a bit beyond the budget. I'll go in for something more appropriate for my tiny "office."

Opt,

In my fiddling around I sussed out which was the .pst file I did my import from my old laptop.

I clicked 'Close' on it and it went away - and has not come back. The other file is the one with the larger number of contacts and a huge (deliberately unarchived) diary.

I seem to be have cracked the problem.

Thanks for your interest and help.

My current favourite printer is an HP OfficeJet 7600. It does FAX, scans PDFs directly to computer (via Ethernet) and claims to be cheaper than a colour laser. It uses four cartridges (CYMK). It cost 190 from Staples.

I also have a colour laser from Lexmark which is truly great but ruinously expansive to run (60 per colour cartridge). Other printers on the home network include an elderly HP LaserJet 4000 PS which is also the mainstay for our mono printing requirements.

klal - 26 Sep 2009 08:54 - 8473 of 11003

tyketto, MM - thanks for your inputs.

I've always favoured HP products. The 720c printer that I bought nearly 9-10 years ago is still going great. The only headache is that I am currently using a laptop and I can't connect the HP printer to it. Tried one of those USB-Parallel Port cables with no joy. Budget is max 100. Nearly bought HP 4580 - waiting for stock to arrive at my local Tesco (where else!).

hilary - 28 Sep 2009 11:26 - 8474 of 11003

I've got a Dell "All in one" printer/scanner wotsit attached via a USB cable. It's not used for printing as we have plenty of other printers on the network, but it is handy to have for scanning.

My problem is this:

It had been correctly installed and was working fine using the Dell drivers. A week or two back, there was a Microsoft Update with a new driver for the printer/scanner which was accepted. After installing the new MS driver, the printer software crashed on loading. A browse of the internet quickly suggested that MS should stick to software as their printer drivers were cr@p and the solution was to un-install the MS driver and re-install the original Dell driver.

We've tried to do this, but the original Dell driver will now not install correctly. Every time the PC is booted it detects new hardware and tries to copy the driver files into the correct folder but can never successfully complete the operation.

Despite this, the printer/scanner is being recognised and we are able to scan from it using the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard. Being perfectly honest, this is a lot easier than it ever was when using the correct Dell driver, so we would like to continue using this method if possible.

How do we go about stopping it detecting and trying to install new hardware and copying driver files as part of the boot sequence though?

Optimist - 28 Sep 2009 12:04 - 8475 of 11003

Hilary

Use system restore to put the machine back to what it was before the MS update. This process is reversible, but will delete any other updates or programs that have been installed since the restore point.

ExecLine - 28 Sep 2009 12:15 - 8476 of 11003

A great plus on doing this, is that you shouldn't lose any new data files introduced since the restore point.

I've only had to use it twice myself but I do think System Restore is an excellent facility and a really useful feature.

hilary - 28 Sep 2009 12:32 - 8477 of 11003

Thanks, Opti.

I have installed other things since then, so it's a bit more tricky than it might otherwise be. I also looked at the Device Manager which suggests that it's properly installed using the Dell driver.

So why, if it thinks it's already properly installed. would it detect new hardware on boot????
