Looking for 2 things

1 what is the best Portable 2.5" 1TB or bigger Harddrive USB 2.0 powered, I've got Western Digital 320gb but think the are pricey. needs fast transfer speeds for playing Movies must work with DVD player etc what other makes are good and can be trusted

2 Looking for a second 24" Widescreen 2ms, HDMI Moniter 20,000 contract ratio, DVI, VGA HDMI connectors etc, already got the Viewsonic VX2433WM still a bit pricey IMO

The compatibles have a higher ink volume but I havn,t tried them.
There is a caution about mixing branded and compatibles.

SC: We have a Lexmark C522 colour laser network printer. It produces excellent print, but is expensive to run. Each of the four cartridges costs 60 or so. The result is that I haven't used it for months, most of my printing needs are met by the HP OfficeJet Pro L7600 which claims to be 50% cheaper to run than a colour laser. It also scans direct to PDF, FAXes, copies and beats as it sweeps as it cleans.

The upside of the Lexmark is that it is a PostScript printer, so easily interfaces with UNIX/Linux/Macs over Ethernet without getting embroiled in the dreaded Windows driver thang.

Thanks MM, that along with Tyketto's posts is a great help. 60 per cartridge is what I was worried about! I'll have a look at those HP's. Every printer we use bar one is HP, because they're just so reliable.

SC: A quick PS for you, given the use to which you intend to put the kit: the consultant surgeon who dealt with my eye problem (corneal ulcer) used an HP digital camera and injket printer to capture the condition of my eye at its worst. (I observed this with my other eye.)

Thanks MM, we use a specialised Canon digital camera, and want something that will produce a good printout. Given what you say, HP inkjet seems to be the way. Are your eyes sorted out now?

Santa brought me a Logitech LX8 Cordless Laser Mouse. Lucky me, except that I've never used any cordless stuff on my PC. Are there any security implications? Should I be worried that the kids next door will be watching my every key stroke? Or is it totally safe to use. TIA TOK

Why not download iTunes to your PC? Load the MP3s into iTunes and let it manage the iPod.

I'm looking for a MFD printer/scanner/copier thing, ideally with fax as well, though that's open to argument.

I want:
- Built-in Ethernet (wireless acceptable, but will probably be wired anyway)
- Duplex
- Colour laser, not inkjet
- Less than 600 quid (ideally, much less)
- Non-extortionate toner cartridges (50 quid per is bearable, 100 per isn't)

I've found several mono MFDs that do everything, a couple of colour ones that have everything except duplex, and other combinations of "not quite what I want".

Any nominations?

Is there any way of saving the report generated after running Chkdsk Fix via My Computer/properties/tools? It flashes up but then is gone before I have a chance to read it. I've tried the Pause key but that doesn't work.

Easier way to do it is via a DOS command, imo.
Go to start, all programs, accessories, command prompt, then type chkdsk after the C:\ prompt. (or to fix the errors, type chkdsk/f)

Thanks for that Harry. It showed I have problems with my File System but running it with F (Fix) doesn't solve the problem (whatever it is). Mmmmh!

The F option should involve a restart as it won't be able to fix the errors with Windows running. So when you type chkdsk/f it should ask if you want to run a diagnostic the next time windows starts.

Going down the DOS route ends up with Program Not Responding hence I tried the My Computer route. Catch 22.

Ah. How about pressing F8 on a restart & then going in to Safe Mode with command prompt or debugging mode from that screen, so that Windows isn't running?

The command chkdsk > c:\temp\chk.txt will direct the output to the file c:\temp\chk.txt .

But as Harry has pointed out, you have to run chkdsk /f in order to correct the errors. This will give you the option to reboot and run it then when you can see the output easier.

I'm not sure what you mean by Going down the DOS route ends up with Program Not Responding but if you are on Vista or Windows7 you need to open the command window in administrator mode.
