Go into the PC in Safe Mode. (Press F8 when the machine is booting up)
You will get a few options.
Choose Safe Mode with Networking.
Download and install Super AntiSpyware Free Edition from http://www.superantispyware.com/.
Try using the code 'FRIEND' to get yourself a discount.
It shouldn't be necessary to update it, if you download it from this web site.
Run a full scan.
Reboot into Normal mode.
Should be sorted.

Finally, I would suggest you strongly consider uing this program (the 'Pro' version) as your main AV software and set it up to run in the background to give you protection from web site nasties when you are browsing and e-mail nasties too, as and when they come in.
SAS updates several times per week and is very, very, up to date. It's also not too sexpensive. One of the best on the market IMHO.

I've just added Windows 7 to an HD with xp installed (dual booting). Is it possible to add shortcuts in 7 to the apps I have in running xp or do I need to reinstall them?

You will have to reinstall all of your programs on the Win 7 system.

Assuming that you are using Windows 7 Profesional or better and if your machine will support it then you could use the Win 7 XP mode. This will run a virtual XP machine within Windows 7, eliminating the need to dual boot but you will still have to instal the programs.

If there is anyone around here who suffers from a confusing surfeit of icons on their desktop I offer the suggestion of Wintidy.

With it I have been able to group my icons into task types and the software will keep them in the same place through reboots, plague and locusts. Not sure about rape and pillage, but it's a bit thin on the ground with all this cold in Fulham!

Just a general question really, as not directly related to PC, but have just got my first touch phone with web browser. Should I have an anti-virus program on it or does the mobile operator (Orange) run its own a/virus?

You are unlikely to get any AV protection from your phone operator.

AV programs are required for phone browsers, but so far, the threat is not as great as with a PC. Only you can decide whether to take the risk or install AV and slow your phone down.

Trouble is that I hook my mobile phone up to my laptop via USB cable, so presumably any virus is easily transferrable between the two?
EDIT: Having done a bit more research on this subject, it looks very complicated. Phones running JAVA software appear to be immune to virus attack. My phone ia a Motorola DEXT running Android 1.5 (Cupcake)[Linux kernel 2.6.27] software. I am non the wiser!

Anyone on here tried KeePass, which is a Free program and a secure way to keep and remember all your usernames and passwords?

The program stores your passwords on your machine in a highly encrypted database. This database consists of only one file, so it can be easily transferred from one computer to another. The program also has a strong random password generator, within which you can define the possible output characters, length, generation rules, etc.

You can drag&drop passwords into other windows. Alternatively, there is a powerful auto-type feature, which will type user names and passwords for you into other windows.

Need some help with a Firefox problem please:

Just rebooted by pc and although everything is working as it should do i am having aproblem with loosing all my bookmarks and history functions it appears that i have lost all my sites that i have bookmarked and i am getting a message at the top just under the toolbar with this comment.

The bookmark and history system will not be functional because because of one of Firefox's files is in use by another application.

The pc is running xp pro and nothing has been changed or altered all that has happened is it was powered down and then rebooted,i could add all the bookmarks again but it would take a long time.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this one please.

I think you might mean your 'browser' has lost its 'Favorites' and also 'History' data.

It seems to me your OS (operating system) is Windows XP Pro and you use Firefox as a browser sometimes and also IE8 as a browser sometimes?

The topic solutions required are to do with Importing/Exporting browser Favorites from the one type of browser to the other:

Sometimes one browser's History will be retained when you swap onto another browser. Eg, The Google Chrome browser retains IE8's browsing History when you do that swap. However, this is not always the case. I guess there is a table somewhere that shows what does do this and what doesn't do this?

I see on the link there is also a mention about importing Favorites onto/into an iPhone.

I personally also like to surf using History. I think some web site owners don't appreciate this and in an insular way, expect everyone to start at the web site's Home page and use links off it. Not for me, I'm afraid.

EL,i only use FF and rarely use IE only to check a few sites that they view ok in both browsers and no i have never done a export to IE as far as i am aware they are still in a file located in FF but i cannot find the location to reinstall them again,why it all of a sudden has gone wrong i am not sure as far as i can see no update has happened and this is the 1st time it has happened.

After i get them back that is if i can i will then add them to IE8 so it does not happen again.

Any other thoughts on this one folks ???
