B6 Hi,
Stanelco have Greenseal, and Starpol 2000 is great for MAP packaging, I don't see that Natureworks have competetive products for either.
Cheers,
PM

Interesting article from Cazenova today ....
The Power of Clubcard
Contrary to popular belief, Tesco's most significant competitive
advantage in the UK is not its scale. We believe Clubcard, which
conveys an array of material benefits across virtually every
discipline of its business, is Tesco's most potent weapon in the
ongoing battle for market share. Very simply; Tesco is big because it
is good, not vice versa.
Despite its centrality to Tesco's success over the past decade, and
ignoring the scope it offers as an ongoing engine of growth, we
believe the importance of Clubcard to Tesco is a material area of
investor misunderstanding that contributes to a widespread
misperception of the UK business as a quasi-mature operation.
In this note we highlight ten areas of the supermarket business, from
site location through supplier relations to ranging and promotional
planning, in which Tesco enjoys advantages over all its UK competitors
as a direct result of Clubcard. Set within the context of an industry
that seeks to affect customer behaviour by small percentages, Clubcard
is an immensely powerful tool, giving Tesco an array of customer
insights and opportunities that are denied to its competitors.
Clubcard is the principal reason that we expect Tesco to continue to
outperform all its UK peers into the medium term and, indeed, it could
also become an important force in Tesco's global expansion.
Valuation
Whether judged by historical standards or set against a variety of
retail, consumer goods or broad stock market benchmarks Tesco, in our
view, is a cheap stock. Given Tesco's superior growth profile, we
believe a 20% premium to the market is easily justifiable - it would,
after all, amortise over 3-4 years given relative growth rates. This
argues for a share price fair value in a range from 360-390p.

belisce, this is from yesterday's egm rns
In an earlier announcement today, NatureWorks LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Cargill Inc has agreed the supply of the major component of Biotec's Starpol
materials which will make Biotec's products price competitive with a number of
materials currently used in the target market segments.
it is natureworks that is supplying seo. see andysmith's post 8728. also, just me thinking out loud, seo have a habit of starting dealings with a company that can supply a crucial ingrediant and then buying that company, as in aquasol, adept and now biotec. does anyone know what natureworks is worth?

Bos Hi,
The relevance is that ASDA need to fight back with Greenseal and Starpol 2000 ASAP :)
Cheers,

I guess it is not surprising to have some weakness in the sp today. My overall view of yesterday's meeting is that any apparent lull in further news is not representitive of the mgt's efforts; SEO is still a stock which has enormous capacity for pulling off deals and contracts, the value of which are easily capable of firing the sp upwards overnight. Tim Freeborn writing all those months ago was absolutely right.
It would be a brave or very nimble operator who would short them in my view.

- relating to post 8760;
bosley......i hope so......because from the stuff PM has been posting; Natureworks is already in there.....in regards to the bio-plastic fruit packaging already being used in US etcetc.....and its "co-operation" with Walmart at the packaging conference.
Just wonder if it would go cheaply enough, for SEO to take it.
[if the corn is better than the spuds, then it's back to the Greenseal.....although corn and spuds are a lot nicer together]

B6: I don't think there's any chance SEO can buy Natureworks.
Here is why

Hi Sellsell
Forgive me if I am wrong, but I think it was you who asked for an update of what my students' employers are doing vis-a-vie trays for fresh produce.
The word is they are now starting to use Starpol trays for fresh produce. So whilst you are in your local superrmarket - their name has an "s" in it - you should see some of their meat products packed with Starpol trays.
I also get the impression that if the RF trials which they are conducting right now go well with the RF sealing of the packs, then they'll will start using Greenseal as soon as ASDA's exclusive period is over in July next year.
I was down in Frome, Somerset over the long weekend and popped into an ASDA and was really impressed with RF sealing on several of their products. Looks really neat and very secure; I know because I surreptitiously try to pull a couple of edges open and failed. The fact that you have to use a knife to open the packages is not in my opinion a problem, but then an old frail or blind person may disagree with me.

Used to shop at Netto in Denmark. One of the major supermarket chains out there. They need an ASDS or Tesco's in Copenhagen!!!
Must admit the beer was bloody cheap in Netto, if you buy in crates. Just don't buy at a pub / bar (pint of guinness will set you back nearly 4)

Ian Balchin was very open at the EGM saying that many of the supermarkets are trialling greanseal - and it does not have any effect on the ASDA agreement - so come on Oily - which one ??

Echo Baza's comment. IB was clear on that. Next July a good many supermarket chains will be ready to hit the road running. Has anyone any inside track to Mondini to know when their RF machine will be ready for sale?
