04/05 Football season (FOOT)

Scripophilist - 12 Aug 2004 11:26

I am signing up to the following if any body wishes to follow me. I will update and post the league table on this thread. Did ok last season but joined late and was unable to catch up the leaders. Here's hoping for a better result this season!!

---------

http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/challengelawro/index.shtml

The new Premiership season kicks off on Saturday and this year BBC Radio Five Live's Challenge Lawro will be bigger and better than ever! What's more - we've also teamed up with BBC Sport's Football Focus. Tune into BBC One every Saturday from noon for the Premiership pre-match build-up and to hear the presenters give their predictions on the weekends' Premiership action.

Win with Challenge Lawro

The prizes aren't bad either - the Manager of the Month is invited onto Five Live's Drive programme to give Peter Jane and Mark, their footie predictions...and also awarded one of our shiny new Manager of the Month medals. At the end of the season, the player who has scored the most points, will be presented with a special Challenge Lawro trophy by the man himself. They will also be offered the chance to come into our London studios to be a pundit with Mark Lawrenson!

Last season, over 120,000 people registered to play Challenge Lawro. If you think you can take on your friends to be the champion of champions, then get playing now!

As at Sunday night. Thought Newcastle would win at Charlton. A split developing in the table.

yes and me, had newcastle down for a 2-1 win, 1 goal out again.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 13:34 - 90 of 213

I think the match tonight is a difficult one. I fancy Spurs to shade it.

proptrade - 18 Oct 2004 13:36 - 91 of 213

nope, i think they fall down tonight and end the fluke start to the season...in all seriousness i think spurs lose 2-0.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 15:20 - 92 of 213

On the long term form I think Pompey could shade it but the short term form which is more reliable seems to point to Spurs. With Robbie Keane looking more interesting I think a tight match with somebody bundling the ball into the back net in the second half.

Now watch this prediction go totally to pot!!

Kivver - 18 Oct 2004 15:22 - 93 of 213

spurs to win one nil

proptrade - 18 Oct 2004 16:00 - 94 of 213

its just that after the chelsea loss against a team they should have dominated, i think spurs will play "boring boring" tactics but do something stupid to let Pompey through.

gut feel, its all i've got but is stand by spurs going down 2-0.

its time that premiership teams (read Chelsea, Spurs) start to remember that they are mean't to play the game as opposed to keep 10 men and their dog behind the ball for 98.7% of the time.

As a Gooner I am blessed to be watching and supporting some of the best football in the modern era. up the gunners.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 17:10 - 95 of 213

As a Southampton support I am cursed to be watching and supporting some of the worst football in my modern memory, sack the board. Less than two seasons after being on a bit of a high I am once again wondering why my loyalty stays with my birth town.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 17:12 - 96 of 213

I've wondered for years what it must be like to watch a team that wins a lot. I remember back to 1982/83 when we finished second and only failed to win the league by three points. But back then most footballers, and managers, were English and it only cost 1.50 to stand on the terraces.

Kivver - 18 Oct 2004 17:30 - 97 of 213

you are the lucky one scrip even though it may not seem it. My team bham city have been out the top flight for about 18 years and ive had to watch some of the most dire matches you could believe esp late 80 early 90 in div 3. You have not gone down yet. I still feel there are 3 teams worse than you. And it is really bad luck to have so many good players injured, any team would find it hard to cope with that.

Yes it was weird Chelsea moaning about negative football when they seem to take the bus to all away games and park it in front of the goal.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 20:20 - 98 of 213

Changed my mind before the kick off, gone for a narrow Pompey win.

Flackwell Vialli - 18 Oct 2004 20:54 - 99 of 213

As a CFC fan through and through I am absolutely amazed at comments about taking the bus to Man City - Did you see the game? Have you seen the stats? Was that a defensive display?

For those that didn't watch Eider, and Lampard had several chances to pull one back. What we lacked at the weekend was a proper finisher in form.

Ironic that after decades of "boring, boring Arsenal" we now have a Gooner on board talking about attacking football.

At this rate we may yet see one talk about fair play and sportsmanship. Mind you thats probably stretching things too far.

Scripophilist - 18 Oct 2004 21:29 - 100 of 213

I didn't see the match but. I had a look at the stats and it looked to me as though Man City were lucky. I don't think they had a single corner in the whole match and Chelsea had six and 11 shots on target I think.

Scripophilist - 19 Oct 2004 10:44 - 101 of 213

Within shooting distance of the top 180!! Just need a bit of luck to breach the lower boundries.

Had a nose at the results so far this season. Many more draws than normal at the moment. Don't know if this is something structural or just a blip. Interesting to note though.

Kivver - 19 Oct 2004 12:24 - 102 of 213

Point taken about Chelsea v Man City but surely you dont get that many 1-0 wins by playing open attacking football.

Watched the first half of spurs v pompey and it should have been 5-0 to pompey, spurs were absolute rubbish (apart from robinson who looks class), how have they possibly got that high in the league?

Flackwell Vialli - 21 Oct 2004 19:14 - 103 of 213

Kivver - Faid comment. Chels at the moment are lacking a proper striker (Drogs - injured, Gronks - off form, Mutu - stoned, and Kezman yet to adapt to England/Chelsea). Why we let your boys take Forsell I'll never truly know - I'd bring him back asap, and let him learn the game with us.

The newspaper talk is of Cole returning, but I'm not sure whether he's an answer or not.

Re;your team - I expected better things from them than I've seen to date - Whats wrong ? You have a good squad on paper.

Scripophilist - 22 Oct 2004 18:00 - 104 of 213

Have placed a nine fold accumulator on this weekend. Will be amazed if it comes in!!

Scripophilist - 24 Oct 2004 00:53 - 105 of 213

Unfortunately Bolton messed me up but I got the other four results correct. The four tomorrow are a little more difficult IMO.

Only one point outside the top 180 now!! Desperate to produce a result tomorrow but such a hard set of matches qqqqqqto predict.

ptholden - 24 Oct 2004 19:07 - 106 of 213

Well, if any one wants to make money out of Premiership football, ask me what my predictions are and bet on the opposite! Had both the Newcastle and Man Utd scores correct until the last minute goals.

An excellent weekend for Carefree. If Rooney had not ruined it would have had a six pointer in the Man U match but had to settle for two. I guess I should have figured Man U would have a penalty and score in extra time!!
