As I'm sure you are aware, we and many of you have had a long and tiresome battle with Java when trying to use our streaming services. We have therefore been working on a solution to remove this problem.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new stockwatch available for use which no longer uses Java. We are currently making this available as a technical beta version, which means we are interested in your feedback regarding performance, bugs and browser/operating system/device compatibility issues (note: design and styling will be addressed in later beta releases).

For the purpose of allowing the old and new stockwatch versions to run concurrently, the technical functionality of the new stockwatch mimics the old one for now (not style, fonts or look). Editing and managing watchlists uses the same process as the current java stockwatch but is now at the top of the page. This will allow you to switch between the versions should you have any problems. All technical features of the current stockwatch are available in the new version except for the ability to drag resize columns. In the near future and as we migrate away from the java version of stockwatch, we will add new usability features as well as design it up to make the whole stockwatch experience smoother than it has ever been.

As this new version does not require java, you should expect it to work on your android devices and ipad/iphones. For now the display has not been optimised for smaller screens, but this will come in future development.

NOTE: Due to javascript performance in Internet Explorer 8, this new stockwatch can cause high CPU load. We recommend you use a current version of a modern browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for best results.

Please do not worry about design/style at the moment as this version has not been styled it is purely a technical beta test environment it will be styled before it is released. We have put this here purely for feedback on its technical functionality i.e does it work in your browser and on your PC/Laptop/Tablet/Mobile

I notic that I no longer have different columns on different watch lists.. is this going to be permenant ?

the colours on the new SW need to be bolder especially the blues imho of course. the neutral prices (light green) distract from the up(blue) and the down (red)..red and blue need to much stronger in colour depth

Why not zoom in or out using Ctrl and Mouse wheel (in Win Chrome, Firefox and IE at least) or Menu option View >> Zoom (IE and Firefox) or Settings >> Zoom (Chrome).

Not sure about Mac but Zoom seems to be the best way.

Our new non-Java Stockwatch is available now. Click here to try it out...

You will be taken to the newer version - java script is not java they are different and this warning may just be particular to your browser set up. Whats the exact message?

Hi Ian et al,
Just tried your non-Java stockwatch for the first time. Technically it all seemed to work ok (I use Safari on my iMac). Had to resize the screen as noted by others above, but this wasn't a problem. The layout was not as easy on the eye as the Java version and I found it difficult to follow stock information across the screen, whereas I have no problem with this on the Java version. I have had more problems recently with my Level 2 screen locking up. To resolve this I have had to shut down Safari and restart all my windows from scratch - most frustrating.

I've been away for a couple of days so am using the new HTML offering in Chrome for the first time today. Presentation in Java is obviously far superior and it's a shame that the Stockwatch application is so flaky in that environment. Ultimately, I need a reliable platform for sp data and if this move to HTML delivers the stability I need then OK. Let's see.

Anything is good to get away from Java. It was so annoying when Java insisted on updates during the trading day, or worse, making us download a completely new Java programme. Accessing the rns items was also a problem, especially when the page would not scroll down.

Lets hope this new system is more reliable.

Just a thought wouldn`t it be clearer to put the 15 mins delayed time on the FTSE 100
scroll on Stockwatch,rather than the actual time, oh and its a bit rich to pay 30 odd quid a month for delayed info too
yes I know you can pay less to get up to date FTSE info, which actually makes it worse.?

Sequestor: Re#100. This functionality is the same as on the Java version. I agree it's a little confusing but it always has been!

Some others have commented on the new set up being more difficult to read across (I agree). The java system has the columns from "Epic" to "Offer" - reading from left to right - in bold. I think this makes it much easier to read and differentiates the most important info and the read across.

I have darkened the alternate line colouring a little to try and help the reading across.

We initially put this up with a grid format which I thought made it more readable, but initial feedback asked for the grid lines to be removed.

The new stockwatch has the function to hover over a row to highlight it (which incidentally I lightened the colour of from orange to a shade of yellow). This should make it more readable.

fbrj: #102. All the bold columns from the Java version are identically bold in the new version. The order of your columns is customisable so I don't know what order yours are in.

an N icon appears to the very left next to the stock when an article is released - very similar to the old version, just to left hand side instead of next to the T icon

As i see it the main thing was to address the reliabilty of the real time feed,and as a result of changing over to the new html5 beta version this has sorted out nearly all the reliabilty problems that was caused by using Java.

The cosmetic layout will be address in the next week or so and maybe ongoing refining the layout.

Its a tremendous step forward and can only get better.

I have found that the columns are now the same for each watchlist, is this a bug or intentional ?
I ask as I have one watchlist which I use to sopy & paste into excel and now the columns are incorrect ...
