Welcome to MoneyAM

Bullshare - 22 Jan 2003 20:35

Welcome to MoneyAM.

Today sees the launch of MoneyAM, a bright new financial website for the smart investor. Our aim is quite simple: we aim to become the UK's leading web-based supplier of shares related content and data.

Streaming real time share prices, up to the minute portfolios, live city news, email alerts, bulletin boards, company fundamentals plus expert analysis supplied by the same award-winning team of journalists, analysts and researchers that produce Shares Magazine every week. These are just some of the great features that MoneyAM provides free to anyone who registers on the site.

Our premium paid for services are compelling and competitively priced and a must for the serious investor/trader. Unlimited level 1, FTSE indices, alerts, Premium market scan tools and the Traders Room (Bulletin Board) are just some of the extras on offer. Level 2 services will be coming to MoneyAM very soon!!!

We hope you enjoy using the site.

Regards

Mike Boydell
Managing Director

It looks like:
1. They can't make the current arrangements pay.
2. A big win for ADVFN.
3. I will have to rely on my broker for the times that, as an investor and not a trader, I need live prices.
4. It has just been getting more difficult for anyone to start out as a private investor over the last number of years; with the huge amount of paperwork to get started and the reducing access to information, without paying significant amounts of money.

I've enjoyed being a contributor to discussions on the Investors bulletin board for many years, and hosting numerous threads here. In the very distant past I was with ESI, then followed the founders via Etrade to Advfn and MoneyAM. Shares magazine is of no use to me (i had it on free trial for a while) and I am not interested in paying for it. So if access to the BB and stockwatch is conditional upon subscribing to Shares, I guess this marks the end of the road for my involvement here. Hey ho.

So is there no one on here with the expertise to just set up a website with say just a forum to start with and then build on it later?

tiswas - 23 Jan 2019 09:50 - 93 of 294

What surprises me is that I am really struggling to find something similar for live prices and level 2 so I would have thought it a niche business with some pricing power.

Anyone got a good level 2 provider?

Haystack - 23 Jan 2019 09:57 - 94 of 294

Stan. There are plenty of free stock related and general BBs such as the lse.co.uk one.

cynic - 23 Jan 2019 09:58 - 95 of 294

for genuine live prices, i use IG L2 platform, but of course i am also a client of theirs

some of you guys might like to consider migrating to FAR9 thread on ADVFN

Stan - 23 Jan 2019 09:59 - 96 of 294

Yes H/S I know but I just thought it would be nice to continue to exchange views with some on here.

Juzzle - 23 Jan 2019 10:03 - 97 of 294

Forum access is still free at t2w.com as far as I know

cynic - 23 Jan 2019 10:03 - 98 of 294

at least the FAR9 thread is generally civilised, though it might need a "sub-section" to allow for more general chitchat

Stan - 23 Jan 2019 10:08 - 99 of 294

Juzzle I have tried to have intelligent conversations on T2W over the years but I'm afraid there were to many yobo responses so I don't bother posting now.

I even got some to come to our "Birmingham Pie and a Pint" evenings that Fred set up years ago.

uk.finance.yahoo.com might be worth a look . Not one I have used but seems to offer a certain amount of info for free.
Digitallook gone as has been taken over.
LondonSouthEast is well frequented, but dogged by idiots, imo.
Motley Fool still exists, but a bit dull, though can be informative.
Not found anywhere recently which offers L2 to the same standard as MAM.

Stan,

It's actually very easy to set up a forum. You need some hosting (preferably a VPS - 15 € a month), and there are plenty of bulletin board scripts out there (eg. phpBB which is free, or vBulletin which is premium) which can be themed in any style and colours you fancy.

That would only take a few days to set up, but, unfortunately, that's the point in time that the real problems start. First off, the new forum would have zero content and no users. So, you've somehow got to attract enough people (probably 50 at least) who would be willing to donate the tme to populate the new forum with threads and posts, and create an amiable community. Then you've got the problem of moderation - tempers sometimes fray on contentious issues (especially once the pubs shut), in addition to which the forum will get inundated with spam where robots and seo 'specialists' from India and Pakistan post backlinks which trash threads. Then there's the problem of a lack of serps experienced by all new websites with low budgets, which will result in poor search engine positioning and a total absence of new visitors. Then there's the problem of monitisation - if somebody's gonna shell out each month to keep the thing alive, they're gonna need to put adverts on the forum of some description to help towards the bills.

Seriously, I could carry on forever listing the problems....

cynic - 23 Jan 2019 10:27 - 102 of 294

IG L2 platform is ace .,... i've used it for years

sponge - 23 Jan 2019 11:05 - 103 of 294

but that's only available for existing customers...

any views on LSE level2? -or any others (reasonably priced)

Stan - 23 Jan 2019 11:08 - 104 of 294

Hilary,

Thanks for your insight very interesting, I very briefly scanned this site yesterday https://makeawebsitehub.com/how-to-start-a-blog/ and will probably have another look at some time, and yes in my limited knowledge of computing I did cop that there are indeed some problems to face and then overcome I wasn't frighted off but it's good to know from someone like you what the "practical" obstacles that will crop up as the site develops in time.

Like a lot of things if they can be kept as simple as possible than that is a VG principle to remember and more importunely use.

On that site Wordpress is quoted but there is the right way and the wrong way to set that up and suspect one really has to seriously get it right from the foundation stage.

You quoted "(eg. phpBB which is free, or vBulletin which is premium)" and that did look like an easy one from a users point of view with no ads. I was a member of a shares board that was set up on the phpBBabout model 5 years ago which ran for something like 3/4 years but like a lot of these things broke up.

Many things to consider and quite early days for someone to get something organised and up and running yet, still there are a few weeks to chew over the prospects.

Juzzle - 23 Jan 2019 11:20 - 105 of 294

Stan - I must confess I haven't found t2w a useful place except for some technical info now and then.

Stan - 23 Jan 2019 11:29 - 106 of 294

As I say Juzzle to many nasty responses to posts on their for my liking and it's mainly everything except intelligent threads on Company shares. I especially wanted individual share threads like on here.

hilary - 23 Jan 2019 12:30 - 107 of 294

Stan,

Blogs and bulletin boards are different things. In that respect, Wordpress, or any other blogging software, is most definitely not what you need.

I'm in a bit of a rush right now, but happy to offer other advice, so feel free to ask.

Fred1new - 23 Jan 2019 12:52 - 108 of 294

Hilary,

My wife is not talking to me at the moment.

But, she is threatening to start again.

-=-=-=

How can I avoid this happening?

8-)

I've just had to duck.

Stan - 23 Jan 2019 12:55 - 109 of 294

Thanks Hilary speak later, hopefully some other posters on here show some interest as well.
