Well defraggler took even longer than the MS version 21.00hrs and finished around 09.30 this am. - and it had an MS defragged HD to start with. I'm still left with 11% defragmentation. I'll try Hillary's option next.

hilary - 08 Oct 2010 11:30 - 9177 of 11003

How full is your hard disk, Kernow?

skinny - 08 Oct 2010 11:32 - 9178 of 11003

That's a bit personnal!

hilary - 08 Oct 2010 11:35 - 9179 of 11003

Is your disk even hard, Skinners?

:o)

skinny - 08 Oct 2010 11:40 - 9180 of 11003

Back in the old days, I used to have an 8 inch floppy!

kernow - 08 Oct 2010 11:42 - 9181 of 11003

35gb used out of 145 gb capacity - hence I can't see the problem of slowness and fragments left over.

kernow - 08 Oct 2010 11:44 - 9182 of 11003

for the record skinny I've still got one :-)

skinny - 08 Oct 2010 11:49 - 9183 of 11003

Lol

MightyMicro - 08 Oct 2010 11:50 - 9184 of 11003

I had a machine with two of those 8" disks - 256Kb capacity each. It was an Altos running CP/M 2.2.

The reset/reboot button protruded from the top front of the case so it was very easy to reboot the thing accidentally. I found that an essential mod was to place a piece of toilet roll centre over the button to shield it.

hilary - 08 Oct 2010 11:50 - 9185 of 11003

Are you boys sure you're that not confusing your inches with centimetres?

Kernow,

I used Auslogics on one of my PCs after you posted earlier this week as it jogged my memory. It only took about 10 minutes to defrag 22GB of used space.

Back to 9147 - time flies when you watch your defragger.

Just installed Acronis 2011. It is aeons ahead in terms of loading and creating a schedule compared with the one I bought a couple of years ago.

Now to see it it works?

Set it to run whilst I savour a pint of Old Peculiar - TGIF.

And on the topic of defragging....

How about defragging your Sky+ hard drive? All that recording and deleting certainly messes the sectors up and slows down the disks operation. Obvious innit, MM?

Here's how to do it:

NB. They call it a 'Sky Rebuild' and it involves accessing a secret part of the Menu - Shhhh! Don't tell anyone else or everybody will be at it! ;-)

1. Choose 'Services' on the Remote

2. Press: 0, 0, 1 and then Select

3. Move along the tabs at the top of the screen to 'Rebuild'

4. Choose Rebuild

5. Note: The digibox's defrag procedure will now start and the digibox will also begin a re-boot procedure after the defrag has finished.

6. If the digibox does not re-boot, switch off at the wall.

7. After a couple of minutes switch on at the wall. If you now press 'TV Guide' on the Remote you will see the electronic programming guide on the screen begin to populate. You might need to be patient here sometimes but once this automatic populating procedure has finished (usually, it only takes about 20 secs) then the machine is now fully ready.

Note: The procedure of 'switching off at the wall' can actually help cure and clear up most Sky+ problems. (Well, not really the 'switching off' but definitely the 'switching on' that has to follow it)

Exec,

Any idea how to do that with a TiVo?

ThePublisher - 08 Oct 2010 14:17 - 9189 of 11003

Acronis Update.

It's done my 100 gig in just about an hour.

This 2011 version is not only easier to configure but also much easier to see what you can recover in terms of folders. With the previous version is involved a lot of delving.

According to the info this version also enables one to migrate to different machines which must be a valuable plus.

And there is an off-site internet storeage option.

I had a bit of a Google and found out that the average Tivo runs on Linux and so cannot really be defragged.

However, when a Tivo is re-booted (switch off, pull the plug, wait 10 - 20 secs, plug in, switch on) you can enable a Kick Start Code by using the Remote's Yellow button.

These Kick Start Codes force the Tivo perform certain functions, eg. to enable some diagnostics at boot time, or help with set-up issues. I see you can actually force a software re-install and one of the ks codes forces a Media File System (MFS) Cleanup (which is a form of defragmentation - and see KS Codes 57 and 58 on the page link below))

You can read more on this and gain some instructions at http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-kickstart-codes.php

My PC is wired to my BT 2.0 home hub. Mrs TOK has aquired a neat little Asus eee pc which I am trying to connect wirelessly to the home hub. I've managed it as all the various updates have downloaded but I can't open Internet Explorer. The page opens with: Problems found. resource (web proxy) is on line but isn't responding to connection. Detected attempts.

Any suggestions, please?

Seymour Clearly - 08 Oct 2010 16:35 - 9192 of 11003

Assume the Asus is running windows? The only thought I have is to try to download Firefox onto a USB stick then try & install onto the Asus, and see if that will open.

The Other Kevin - 08 Oct 2010 16:45 - 9193 of 11003

Windows 7. Bit relucatant to add to much to the machine as it has been provided by her employer. Might have to wait until her IT guys have a look at it on Monday unless anyone can suggest something.

ThePublisher - 08 Oct 2010 16:58 - 9194 of 11003

Thanks Exec about the TiVo.

My instinct is that these are not referring to my TiVo which is pretty old and made by Thomson.

When it is powered on, or rebooted, it seems to re-load the software each time.

If it ain't broke.......................

Back to playing with the defragger.

I thought those tiny notebooks ran a version of Linux - if it's Win 7 you'll need lots of memory, etc. etc. Some hardware is Win-only - I wonder how they ever get anything to print!
((Linux doesn't use the same HDD (file)-arrangement as Win, so defragging is not an issue - leave it be.))

Tivo:
FWIW I have a Sony TV-tuner/DVD writer with HDD and this does need HDD attention, only it will often refuse to complete. If I delete abt 20 hrs, then the process is OK....seems a bit like the software is somwhat poor....but you can't do much about it, sadly.
