PC & MAC CLINIC - On line problem solving. (CPU)

Changed to Avast and speed back to 'normal'.
If/when AVG sorts itself out I will try it again.

iiwarm - 27 Oct 2010 11:06 - 9240 of 11003

Once again I confirm that I'm not having any problems so far with 2011 on Win 7 though I'll be happy when they do away with the update banner you get everytime you open the interface.
However I am confused by some of the arguments expressed above. These products are used to protect our machines from outside influences and if that takes up a bit of time so be it. I don't see the point of installing protection and then switching off various components simply to speed it up. Likewise installling a product which provides a lower level of protection might speed things up but is that what we really want?
I don't know what level of protection Avast provides but if someone can confirm that it is equal to AVG I'll certainly give it a try.

Mega Bucks - 27 Oct 2010 11:14 - 9241 of 11003

Avast in my mind is as good as AVG infact i have totally changed over all of our machines.

iiwarm - 27 Oct 2010 11:46 - 9242 of 11003

Just had a look at Avast free and in their own words it provides "the minimum" level of protection and does not provide protected web surfing which is the bit of AVG which seems to be causing some people speed problems.

HARRYCAT - 27 Oct 2010 11:58 - 9243 of 11003

Of course they do, because they want you to buy the Pro version, just like AVG.

hilary - 27 Oct 2010 13:22 - 9244 of 11003

iiwarm,

Some people might think they need all the bells and whistles but, personally, I just need a good virus scanner with up to date definitions. All the net nanny stuff is just a pain in the backside imo.

The old AVG worked perfectly well for my needs and I'd be happy to roll back to it quite frankly.

iiwarm - 27 Oct 2010 15:32 - 9245 of 11003

Hilary
I can see your point of view. Trouble with these things is that you only know how good they are when you get infected and then it's too late of course.
For the first time ever the new version of AVG stopped me going onto a dubious site (no not one of them! streaming TV) which the old one always let through.
Whether you want this to happen or not is a matter of opinion as you say but it was good to see evidence that it works and, in my case, with no speed cost.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

If you are in the habit of using open WiFi hotspots, you should read this. As much a study in human psychology as computer security, and an entertaining read even if it doesn't seem to apply to you.

Firesheep: The controversial Firefox extension that allows anyone on an insecure open Wifi network to access user login info for almost every single social network in existence.

Hmmm?

Isn't the solution just to see to it that you login via 'https' rather than just 'http' ??

Any assistance with a slow PC and 'not responding' when using Stockwatch?

Updated to the new Java (prior to this I had no probs with Stockwatch - smooth and quick) now it stalls, wont click in, slows my PC like no ones business.

I am sure its the updated Java..it as literally brought my PC to its knees!

removed it then downloaded again but no success

On Firefox

any ideas?

vm obliged

jonuk76 - 01 Nov 2010 14:14 - 9250 of 11003

You mean the PC is slow when using Java or all of the time?

And in add/remove programs list is there more than one version of Java showing?

cowshapedfish - 01 Nov 2010 14:33 - 9251 of 11003

As soon as I click onto Stockwatch and Java kicks in to allow me to see streaming my system slows down immediately but generally since I downloaded the recent version of Java my system is SLOW compared to prior to downloaded

I removed all versions of Java on my PC and downloaded the new version, removed it then installed again but did not solve the problem

It seems the updated Java is the problem because the previous one was fine

something isn't compatible and Java is the problem. I do get messages about 'scripts' or something like that

Haystack - 01 Nov 2010 14:50 - 9252 of 11003

I have the latest version of Java (recently downloaded) and a fully updated Firefox and have no problems with stockwatch. It sounds like something specific to your PC set up.

cowshapedfish - 01 Nov 2010 15:10 - 9253 of 11003

HAystack

Can I ask how do I know if my Firefox is fully updated?

Many thanks

I just ran Firefox with ten tab windows open including Stockwatch plus Internet Explorer with ten tab windows and the PC was as fast as ever. The PC I tried it on is not that powerful. 1 Gig memory and an old processor. Maybe you have too many processes running from startup or your anti virus software or firewall is slowing it up. What brands of software for these are you using?

Try running msconfig from the Windows key/Run command and look at startup to see what you are running when the PC boots up or look at the task manager - processes.

How much memory do you have?

jonuk76 - 01 Nov 2010 15:48 - 9256 of 11003

Could try clearing the Java cache which will force it to re-download any Java apps. That would be Control Panel > Java - In the General tab there is a button for settings for temporary internet files. Choose the option to delete the files.

Haystack - 01 Nov 2010 18:05 - 9257 of 11003

In fact you could downoad ccleaner and run it to clear all your temporary files and maybe defragment your disk with smartdefrag.
