Anyone know a fix to the search facility under Windows 7 Home (ie one that actually works!). Getting either no returns or partial returns on disk searches. Done a bit of googling on it, but I'm going round in circles at the moment. What a pile o' pants is MS!

ThePublisher - 25 Nov 2010 17:25 - 9293 of 11003

This is what I installed on Vista as I got bored with the MS offering.

It says it is not for W7, but I've just set it running and it seems to be doing its search.

Not the answer you expected - but it may help.

you're not by any chance looking for hidden or system files are you? If so you can unhide them in control panel>folder options>view

Nothing like that :) I have many folders of photos which I diligently labelled so that I can search back on them. All worked fine until something broke (is it system indexes?). Now I can't get a search result even when the file is right there in front of me! I need to dig further for a fix, but it's so annoying spending time fixing MS's nonsense when I could be creating.

I installed RemoveIT Pro V7 Ultra (Free version) on my PC last nite cos ive some infection that MS Security Essentials Windows can't remove. I had thought I wasn't infected cos MS Sec Essentials had not picked anything up but RemoveIT Pro did pick up 12 infections but when it came to 'fix' the problem the program requested payment of $25 which Im not paying for!

Does anyone know of a malware, spyware, bug, infection, virus removal software package that is free and detects ALL infections etc on a PC (MS Sec Essentials does not detect all infections and bugs which I thought it did)?

Many thanks

Ps my PC will not auto turn on in the morning because of this infection

ThePublisher - 26 Nov 2010 08:36 - 9297 of 11003

PlanB,

Did you try Instant File Name Search?

It is FREE and it seems to work on my W7.

On one PC I work with three hard drives that store tens of thousand of photographs. I need to be able to find images by their numeric name and it does work - virtually instantly.

Csf - In my experience any free evaluation of anti-virus software will always find a number of 'infections', otherwise you would think it's not worth having it. However, the infections will usually turn out to be cookies or temporary files which are not generally harmful.
I can recommend IO bit Advanced Windows Care & Avast free version which I use with XP and Vista, but others may appeal.

Thanks for the suggestion .. I'll take a look later today when time permits.

Still pi**ed that I've bought the MS OS with a search facility and all the checks say it's working, and it patently isn't.
Just want to slap this guy!

PlanB
just had a little play around with your problem.
Added name of picture folder to search and it came up with nothing but it appeared to be searching "favorites" only. This seems to be the default setting.
Picked out the correct partition on the left hand list and it found the folder and the contained pics.
Did the same by selecting "computer" in the middle of the empty result panel and again it gave me the full list. You can also select it from the little arrow (with magnifying glass icon) near the address window or the left hand panel.
Hope this is what you need.

Thanks for your comments .. but it is precisely this that's going wrong on my PC.
Highlight the correct disk or partition or folder, knowing the target is there .. but no result :(

very strange! looks like we've reached the limits of my paygrade, sorry.

"You could also use it for something like Readyboost with Vista where vista can use a usb drive like ram..."

I tried that on my studio machine and I thought it went faster. I have just done the same on this (office) machine and I am 99% certain there is an improvement.

I have probably overdone it with 16 gig cards - but my thinking was that later incarnations of Windows might value them - and, in real terms the price difference is only a few quid.

I'm considering a switch of ISP - currently onetel 2mb - as faster options up to 6/7 mb are supported on my line. I also have unlimited downloads (fair use policy). My question is how do I know what my data consumption is so I can consider a capped service? My onetel account has no facility for measuring this. I don't use p2p but I do use skyplayer and the BBC/ITV players sometimes.
Is there software e.g. like the dashboard I get with my mobile dongle that I can use?
TIA
