Croc. I had a shock today doing a Norton Ghost back up. Although I have the 2002 boot disk, I recently purchased v.2003 (on-line download) which is easier for a DOS numbskull like me. I also wanted to be sure I could give Symantec a hard time if a fault occurred (not my doing)!

Anyway, I did the image creation steps in Windows (as instructed) and waited for the program to restart into DOS (also as instructed). I then had the message "Boot Disk Failure"! I switched off and on for a number of times but Windows wouldn't appear, just that message.

My mood was black! I went away for an hour and started up again just to see if there was a change (couldn't see why there would be) but the Ghost DOS operation actually functioned on booting up and the image transferred to the other hard drive (this is the TraderPC with 2 hard disks I bought from you last Summer). I then got Windows back as expected. I don't know why that problem happened and it makes me nervous of doing another back-up. Any thoughts?

Bones

PS I haven't read through the thread in full so apologies if anything has already been said on such a matter.

Biffer, installed the firewall and as you say it's fairly painless. However first of all I couldn't connect to the net (solved this) and now because I have the settings set to block all cookies, animation, advertisments etc... I find I have to log-in everytime I want to view a page on this site. For now I have had to allow cookies again. Did you manage to find away round this?

The thing seems to be blocking everything!!

Thanks.

Iain - 02 Feb 2003 15:10 - 98 of 11003

Youi have to enable cookies to view most sites i think.
I use Norton Internet Security. With that you can set up Exclusions for each site you visit.

Mr Euro - 02 Feb 2003 15:17 - 99 of 11003

Thanks. If I understand you correctly Iain you 'block cookies' but produce a list of sites where cookies are allowed, i.e. Moneyam?

Whats blood annoying is it's only this site I seem to have problems with, ADVFN is fine.

Mr Euro - 02 Feb 2003 15:52 - 100 of 11003

This is what i like, buy some software and spent all friggin day trying to make things work!! I can't load certain sites i.e. java feeds even though I have java enabled - anyone any ideas?

Thanks

Mr Euro - 02 Feb 2003 15:57 - 101 of 11003

heres an error message which i get when trying to load pogo games (chess java) whihc is as a result of the firewall installation:

The following error has occurred:
The Applet Encountered a Programming Error (Cripes!)
Explanation:
This error usually indicates that either the applet has been corrupted in your cache, there's a bug in your browser or there's a bug in our applet.

How to Fix the Problem:
The most common cause of this error occurs when your copy of the applet is corrupted. So the first thing you should do is clear your browser's cache and see if this fixes the problem.

Pull down the Tools menu and choose "Internet Options"
Click on the General tab.
Click on the Delete Files button in the "Temporary Internet Files" section and then click OK when the dialog box appears.
Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.
Exit and relaunch Internet Explorer.
You might also need to turn off your Java JIT compiler. Here's how to do that:

Pull down the Tools menu and choose "Internet Options"
Click on the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the "Java VM" subhead and make sure "Java JIT compiler enabled" is unchecked.
Click the OK button.
After clearing your cache, you need to quit and restart your browser. If you don't quit the browser, your cache will not be completely cleared out.

If this doesn't seem to solve your problem, try rebooting your computer.

If this does not fix the problem, you may have a caching proxy server between you and our web server. To see if this is the case, check the proxy setting for your browser. If there is a proxy server set, try turning it off. Then clear your cache again as described above, and quit and restart your browser to see if it fixes the problem.

If this does not fix the problem, your browser may not be installed properly. Try re-installing your browser.

If all of these solutions still don't fix your problem, then you have probably encountered a bug in our applet or in the browser you are using. Earlier browser versions (Netscape 3.x and 4.0x as well as Internet Explorer 3.x) may have Java-related bugs in them that are causing the problem. There is a good chance that upgrading your browser will fix the error. If that does not solve the issue, then it is probably a bug in our applet. Please let us know by going to http://help.pogo.com.

Mr Euro: I understand how you feel, I really do.....

I've just tried backing up some files by burning them on to a CD. (First effort, folks!) As far as I can tell, the information is now on the CD and I have ticked the box allowing me to read the CD in any CD rom drive. Put in disc, silence, then whirs after about 15 seconds. But nothing comes up. Evenutally it stops whirring.

I've looked under My Computer and it is definitely there, I even have two copies, one in the V and one in the W drive. But how do I read the contents, please .... anybody?

Please don't worry about insulting my intelligence..... that drive is completely empty.

Biffer - 02 Feb 2003 17:21 - 104 of 11003

Mr Euro, sorry, only just checked in to this thread.

Are you still having a problem? I don't have any problems other than sometimes when I start a new application for the first time a pop-up appears asking if the remote access is to be authourised permanently or temporarily, e.g. downloading from TC2000. I don't think I got it at all with this site.

What level of security have you got set? I had to set it to medium (which is still ok) because of the access I need to my work VPN.

There may be some help available on the Zonelabs site.

Hi Biffer,

The settings I have are:

Firewall
Internet - High
Trusted - Medium

Program control - Medium
Automatic Lock - off

Privacy:
Cookie Control off (I want this on medium but cant use MONEYAM unless it's off, it keeps requesting log in for every new page).
Ad blocking off (sometimes on medium but some sites dont work unless its off)

So far I have had 11 intrusions (1 high rated). A lot seem to be coming from the Chester area - is it you Gausie!!! Not sur
e what to make of all these intrusions!?

Biffer - 02 Feb 2003 20:27 - 107 of 11003

Mr Euro,

My setting are:

Internet Zone Security: Medium
Trusted Zone Security: Medium
Blocked Zone: None

Program Control: Medium
Automatick Lock: Off

Privacy
Cookie Control: Medium
Ad Blocking: Medium
Mobile Code Control: Off

I've tested these settings at www.grc.com and they are ok. No problems accessing any sites either - perhaps it's the dodgy sites you're accessing :)

Mr Euro - 02 Feb 2003 21:11 - 108 of 11003

No Biffer I can still get my streaming porn, I sorted that out straight away :-)

For some reason the firewall treats sites differently depending on if I use AOl or IE. I can access MoneyAM fine from IE but not AOL.

Seymour Clearly - 02 Feb 2003 22:05 - 110 of 11003

vasey, a V and W drive?!! How many drives have you got!

What have you done, gone into my computer, clicked on the drive the CDR disc is in and there's no disc? If the disc is there then click on that, should then list your files. Also, which program did you use to make the disc? I'm only any good with Easy CD Creator as that's my prog! However, may be able to help.

The drive probably will only whir when you put the disc in as there are no programs on it. (i.e. no .exe files).

However, I could be wrong....

Crocodile - 02 Feb 2003 22:11 - 111 of 11003

Well just like in real life you can pick up a virus from those dodgy sites.
So I have been told ;-)
As a check run Spybot on Jimmy Choo
