2006 tip from City Equities

ID Data
More than plastic people In this edition we put questions to Peter Cox,
CEO of ID Data, about the past, present and future of the company. He reminds us of how the business was built and how he believes it is undervalued, identifi es the target markets and points to growth in Europe and beyond. He even puts his neck on the line regarding the national ID card! Peter, could you tell us briefl y about what ID Data does? ID Data is a service and systems integrator for the smart and magnetic card industry with a focus on contracted sales to major national
and international organisations. It targets the retail, fi nance and government
sectors with complete solutions that enable clients to design, produce and personalise cards to their exact requirements. We are geographically focused on delivering solutions to European, Middle Eastern and African markets. Moreover it is one of the top 15 providers in the world and is the sixth largest supplier of Visa and MasterCard. The Company has two strategic approaches to its market; fi rstly, the delivery of the physical product and support services and, following the acquisition of CardBASE last year, the delivery of licensed intellectual property
for the management of card applications for banks, government and secure access.
How has the Company changed since it was formed?

The Company was formed in 1988 and acquired the card printing business of Maxwells BPC Group. During the 1990s, ID Data focused on the introduction of loyalty programmes into the UK and was the Company behind the launch of card-based products for Homebase, Tesco, Boots, WH Smith and many other major UK and European schemes. In 1999 the Company entered the smart card sector and acquired the card businesses of GPT Card Technology (a Marconi unit) and Rexam. These acquisitions were made with the objective of securing a large production
capability to deliver the anticipated launch of Chip and Pin in 2000. In September 2000, ID Data listed on AIM and started to consolidate the acquired businesses into a single focused delivery company. With the market crash in 2000, which led to
many of the technology projects expected to materialise in the early 2000s being delayed, the industry as a whole became non profi table. Nevertheless, during this period ID Data continued to build its product and licensed software offerings, and now that the industry has rebounded, the prospects for the business look very exciting. ID Data can now offer a compelling solution to todays market needs.
What are its target markets? ID Data is targeting the following sectors:

The retail market, which encompasses loyalty, credit and the new gift cards, which will eventually replace paper vouchers as a gift token.

Banking and fi nancial cards focusing on credit, debit and pre-paid technology for
major banks and insurance companies.

Government for national and local identity cards, health cards, driving licences and access products including citizen cards for travel and benefi t payments.
Do you think the investment world understands the transition that has been made and where the Company is now positioned? We feel that we have now built a tremendous business and that ID Data is not currently understood by the market. The Companys acquisition strategy, and subsequent lack of profi tability to date, has been a planned approach where we have brought companies at a fraction of their asset value and reworked the reorganisation taking all expenses straight
to the P&L. Consequently many investors who do not have a full insight see us as a loss making business, not as a company in transition, which has built a powerful offering and is now moving into the exploitation stage. We have spent 20m on building a business that would have normally cost two to three times this amount to create with the same asset base and power to deliver to international standards.
Transferring production to Poland was a key development, but could you put a fi gure on how much this has saved the Company? Our move of bulk card production to Poland will produce signifi cant cost reductions, both in our overheads and labour content in the products we sell. This is expected to be around 3m p.a. on forward trading, and creates a platform where we will have some 230 million card capacity and selling prices that make us highly competitive in our European
target market. Where does this leave the UK businesses? Very focused with the capability to handle large volumes of personalisation and fulfi lment for our clients in the UK and continental Europe with consultancy and software support.

■ ID D The big challenge now is to develop our distribution model and get market
coverage to gain the business needed to drive our profitability. We will open
sales offices in Europe and develop strategic partnerships to gain markets.
What do you see as being the main opportunities open to ID Data at present?
Would you say it was the provision of services or going global with one of
your bigger customers? Yes this is a simple way to gain a global coverage and we have demonstrated this with deals where we delivered to 15 countries from Europe to the Americas secure fuel card products and security devices for computer servers. Most of our clients are global so the challenge is to get them to take us with them as they develop their businesses. There has been much speculation about a national ID card. Whats you view on this and do you believe that ID Data
can benefit if it is ever introduced? We believe this will happen and that
as the largest supplier to the UK government ATA of smart cards there should be an
opportunity for us to supply. Where do you see ID Data in five years time?
We see a highly profitable business with significant sales of software products, as
well as cards in Europe. We are in a market that is consolidating, however, so we
could see us being an acquisition target as well as an acquirer. You received the backing of a number of City institutions via a fundraising and a debt conversion exercise, as well as gaining further support from Fidelity in October. Why do you think that such backing was forthcoming? We believe that our strategy is credible.
We have demonstrated our ability to win against the global giants in our sector and
to deliver additional value to our clients. These factors given time will result in
significant profits and enhanced shareholder value.

Think azhar's post from City Equities makes excellent reading. It really does fill me with confidence for the next 12/24 months. Have recommended the share to a very close friend today who's planning to invest - wouldn't have done that if I wasn't sure of the future.

Anyone have any guesses (educated or otherwise) /thoughts as to the sp at the end of 2006?

Mr Mole - 15 Jan 2006 14:53 - 945 of 1253

From the iii message boards.....quote

Apparently the 6 months to Nov (ish) were profitable! Therefore the probability is that as a result of all the significant improvements over the past year, this coming year is going to be profitable!

The question is...How big is the profit going to be? Regardless of the size of the profit, the fact that this company is now into profit requires that a substantial rerating of the companies value is made...which has got to be good for the current shareholders

Mr Mole - 15 Jan 2006 14:55 - 946 of 1253

Source as above...quote...

The article only states that - "The CardBASE Technologies business acquired last year has seen a period of excellent sales progress and delivered the first half year profit in that company's history."

Cardbase is only one component of IDD.

I'm heavily into these. I think now is the time to get in, before general market awareness, but let's get the facts right.

Regards
Kevin

Mr mole
Gr8 posts, looks like we will see blue soon,if not i reckon there will be an increase in trading from now

Mr Mole - 19 Jan 2006 10:37 - 948 of 1253

interesting post from iii..

I'm going to guess (although it isn't really that much of a guess, as I've worked in this area at a 'strategic' level) that it will be fronted by EDS - because they always put in the 'cheapest bid', ...and always fail to deliver...and change more for minor alterations to the contract), with IDD being a subcontractor or partner. Yes it is possible that when the ID Card process begins, then EDS may have a go at swallowing IDD.

Interestingly enough, I reckon that the sum of the parts of IDD (cost on the market) of all the elements should come in at about 60million (ish), compared with current valuation of about 12million. Overall I'm very impressed at that considering the amount spent on aquisitions. This is a remarkable company, and if EDS intend to have a go at 'swallowing' it, then it'll cost them more than 6p a share based on my current 'guesstimates'. There is nothing cheaper around worldwide that can provide the same solution! Once the ID income comes on line, then the value of this company is anyones guess.
