How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Fantastic result for the gooners, I was at the ProShare awards last night so I missed the match but there were plenty of fans to fill me in on the detail on the train home. I thought they were winding me up but it looks like Arsenals name could be on the cup!

Betangel appears to be sticking quite a lot recently - is this just a problem at my end or are others having same probs?

Scripophilist - 29 Mar 2006 14:42 - 9547 of 10502

Hmm, If you are on the new version you may want to log on using a different connection mode. Try mode 1 or mode 19.

Fundamentalist - 29 Mar 2006 16:40 - 9550 of 10502

I dont think im on the new mode - can you post me a download link please

bakko - 29 Mar 2006 16:41 - 9551 of 10502

Scrip,

In plain English, what are these connection modes? I've left mine on default 0.

Scripophilist - 29 Mar 2006 16:47 - 9552 of 10502

The connection modes let us change how your traffic is routed to Betfair. We used to do this via the software automatically but thanks to Betfair and various ISP's we decided to break it out and make it user definable. This should improve performance for everybody. Default 0 is usually the best to use unless you are experiancing problems.

Scrip

Fundamentalist - 29 Mar 2006 17:01 - 9556 of 10502

Just downloaded, like the look of the ladder page, especially for when trading the cricket when it helps to be able to see further down the book (looks very much like a level 2 screen)

For want of being greedy, a small price only chart below each ladder would prob make the perfect trading screen for me - any chance?

Fundamentalist - 29 Mar 2006 17:06 - 9557 of 10502

When looking at a live race, it appears that only 3 rows of the ladder ever have numbers in, does it not display the whole book?

Lyon v AC Milan

The Stade Gerland hosts one of the most intriguing UEFA Champions League quarter finals as fancied Milan travel to perennial dark horses Lyon.

Gerard Houllier has continued developing on the solid groundwork laid by Paul Le Guen, as Lyon close on a fifth successive domestic title and in Europe too they continue to impress.

Lyon have proven their credentials in Europe's premier competition over the past couple of seasons but on Wednesday, are without their creative epicenter Juninho.

The gifted Brazilian will be a frustrated observer from the stands as he serves a one-game suspension, with either Benoit Pedretti or Jeremy Clement the most likely to step in.

Houllier's other selection dilemma concerns his defence, with fit-again duo Anthony Reveillere and Claudio Cacapa both pressing for recalls.

However, in their absence Francois Clerc and Patrick Muller have both deputised with distinction and are likely to hold on to starting berths.

Sylvain Wiltord's fine form of late should see off the threat of Sidney Govou on the right flank, as the former Arsenal wide man retains his place.

Milan have an embarrassment of riches going forward but at the back, injuries plague their squad and it could be an uncomfortable night for what will be a makeshift back four.

Carlo Ancelotti is blessed with the choice of whether to pair Alberto Gilardino or Filippo Inzaghi with the tournament's top goalscorer Andrei Shevchenko, who tops the charts on eight goals.

Whilst whichever strikeforce Ancelotti plumps for will likely be a persistent thorn for Lyon, at the back, the Italian tactician is without Jaap Stam and Cafu through injury.

Making up a trio of veteran absentees is Paolo Maldini, who despite being fit again after three months on the sidelines is not ready to start.

Ancelotti is though boosted by Alessandro Costacurta who, despite his ageing legs, insists he will be available to make his second appearance in five days.

Milan may have the history in Europe, but Lyon are unbeaten in their last 13 Champions League games and have scored an impressive 11 goals in their last four home CL clashes.

But then Milan are not one of the competition's favourites at the start of each season for any reason other than they are a class act and if Lyon are to spring a surprise, then they must be at the top of their game all evening.

Inter V Villareal

Talk of Adriano's possible omission dominates the pre-match agenda in Milan as Internazionale face Villarreal in a UEFA Champions League quarter final, first leg at Giuseppe Meazza.

Will he play or won't he? The decision is coach Roberto Mancini's alone, claimed Nerazzurri owner Massimo Moratti on Monday.

Adriano's form has suffered since the winter break and, after managing just three goals in 14 appearances, the hitherto prolific front-man may have exhausted the patience of Mancini.

Julio Cruz, Alvaro Recoba and Obafemi Martins are all viable contenders to displace the Brazilian but Mancini is keeping his selection policy a closely-guarded secret.

Inter's home form has been excellent this season - Mancini's side have suffered just two defeats on home soil, both in Serie A, to Roma and Juventus - although a 1-0 defeat at Parma on Saturday was hardly ideal preparation for the visit of Villarreal.

Yellow Submarines coach Manuel Pellegrini believes his side are more than capable of upsetting the odds once again.

"Inter are under a lot of pressure because they're the favourites," said the Argentine.

"As for us? Well, we were weaker than Everton, Rangers and Manchester United but we still won so we're hoping for more of the same."

The Spaniards travel to Italy discouraged by poor recent form, however.

Last weekend's disappointing 2-1 home defeat to struggling Real Betis extended Villarreal's winless run to five matches which includes a 1-1 home draw with Rangers in the previous round.

The Liga side's prospects are hampered further by suspensions to Alessio Tacchinardi, Josico and Rodolfo Arruabarrena while Javi Venta, Antonio Guayre and Juan Manuel Pena are doubtful through injury.

The winner of this tie could face Arsenal in the semi-finals after The Gunners dispatched Juventus 2-0 on Tuesday.
