Why not try a system restore to a point/date prior to the installation of the Windows update & see if that improves the speed?

okay - managed to get back to near normal status. A reset of the router a coupla days ago seems to have caused the channel to change from 6 to 1. Changed this back to 6 from the admin page and rebooted. Now my daughter's laptop connects at about 11 MB which is a heck lot better than the earlier 1-2 MB. Keeping an eye on it though.....

Thanks CCC. Just one thing puzzles me - the wireless connection between daughter's laptop and the wireless router is stuck betwen 5 and 11 MB, it seems to suggest the laptop has reverted to "b" mode rather than "g" I firmly believe it was at at least 54 MB prior to this problem. I guess I need to tweak some network settings somewhere to force it work in the "g" or mixed mode. In reality, my BB speed is no more than 5 MB. Might not make a big difference on internet....

Want a very easy way to get at all those controls?

Then use 'GodMode'.

Simply open a New Folder in your drive C. eg, Just 'Right Click' anywhere on your Desktop.

Then Rename it (as follows):

GodMode.{ed7ba470-8e54-465e-825c-99712043e01c}


Select it and hit 'Return'.

Once that is done, the Folder's icon will change to resemble a 'control panel'. Selecting it will reveal how it contains dozens of control options about 40 or so, give or take.

I'm not sure whether you will actually turn into a computer God, but it is a handy way to get to all kinds of controls. GodMode is actually a shortcut to accessing the operating system's various control settings.

I updated Java 4 weeks ago (26) and since then I cannot make Stockwatch operate correctly. It sticks and then clicks off and Java simply will not click in and function as it should. It's never happened before..ive tried every browser possible and the problem is exactly the same with all of them..

The old Java versions were superb and I had no problems at all but since ive been using the updated versions it's been a pain up the backside

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled etc etc and nothing works

any ideas pls?

I can't really help, but I'm getting the same thing since the update - I don't use MAMs stockwatch, so I'm fairly convinced its java at the route of it!!!!

I have the Java update and everything is working fine.

How odd. I'm on free at present so gonna change over to full stream after next month. I'm sure it' s something to do with the intermittent nature of temp access to stockwatch (free) as opposed to paid

What software are you running? XP with the Java update seems o.k. but I know IE9 has a number of issues which I believe are being slowly resolved. I don't think XP supports IE9, so presumably you are running Vista or 7?

Vista with Maxthon browser though Ive tried new Java with other browsers and it will not function correctly..it once did but not now..very odd

I'm running with IE 8 and XP pro and since the Java update I get one or two Java crash error messages a day. I think it's linked to streaming Stockwatch but there doesn't seem to be a clue in the code that the error messages contain. If someone thinks they may be able to decipher the code I'll post the next one that appears.

TOK: Probably worth posting the error messages. Not seen any problem myself. (FireFox 5.0, Java update 26, Win XP Pro SP3, Lenovo ThinkPad T500)

What sort of spec is your machine?

ie, CPU? RAM? Operating System? etc?

Windows XP SP3
Pentium 4 2.53ghz
1 Gig of ram

My error messages are similar to Skinny's. (Sod's law I haven't had one yet today).
2 gig AMD Athlon 64
2048 meg RAM
3 GB main hard drive
XP3 Pro

Ironically - neither have I !


I have pointed it out before, but I don't use stockwatch ( I still use AFN monitors ) and I get the error on both Chrome & IE. Therefore I assume the problem is with Java itself as that seems to be the only common factor?
