Cheers mitzy.

An outbreak of equine flu has forced the cancellation of all British racing on Thursday – and the British Horseracing Authority is set to decide in the coming hours how long the shutdown must last.

The BHA made the decision to cancel all Thursday’s cards on Wednesday night after the Animal Health Trust confirmed three positive tests from vaccinated horses in an active racing yard.

In an initial statement, the BHA reported horses from the infected yard raced on Wednesday at Ayr and Ludlow, adding identification of the virus in vaccinated animals presented a “cause for significant concern”.

“ Following these results being known, a call will be convened to discuss the implications, and a decision will then be made as to the impact on racing in the coming days ”

BHA statement

Donald McCain’s yard was the only one represented at both tracks.

In an update on Thursday morning, the governing body added: “We will endeavour to issue regular information, but we are still in the early stages of assessing the scale and severity of the outbreak.

“We are working quickly to identify the extent of the infection and will have more information when further test results are returned today. The results from those tests will not be known until this evening.

Four more cases in Newmarket at Simon Crisfords yard .

MONEYTALKS - 11 Feb 2019 12:04 - 9596 of 9624

Newmarket-based trainer and veterinary surgeon James Tate admits the discovery of four cases of equine influenza in the town is a significant blow to the chances of racing resuming later this week.

The British Horseracing Authority announced late on Sunday evening that four vaccinated horses at the yard of trainer Simon Crisford had been found to have contracted the highly-infectious disease.

The news came after what had appeared to be a positive weekend in the fight against the virus, with no fresh cases being reported since three horses – which subsequently rose to six – were found to have virus at Donald McCain’s stable in Cheshire last Wednesday.

Tate told Sky Sports Racing: “Basically this is another trace that will need to be followed and another line of investigation.

“Yesterday we were all hoping that while poor Donald McCain’s yard was on lockdown, the rest of us might be able to get back going.

“Now it’s Donald McCain’s yard and Simon Crisford’s yard on lockdown and we have to trace the Simon Crisford line of infection before we can let everybody else keep going.

“And then, God forbid, we get any other positives in other yards.”

Whereas McCain’s yard and gallops are self contained, Crisford is based in the biggest training centre in the country – meaning his horses could have come into contact with horses from other yards while working on the Newmarket Heath.

Tate added: “The virus can be transferred through the air – although only a certain amount of metres – and between staff and between horses passing in strings.

“If Simon Crisford’s horses have just tested positive, none of them were infectious during the early part of last week and certainly in the latter part of last week he was exercising on the Heath in the afternoons with other at-risk horses.

“It is concerning and we just have to hope it hasn’t transferred to any other yards.

“The long and the short of it is we were hoping to get back racing towards the end of this week and this is a setback and now that looks unlikely.”

Some 720 tests had returned negative on Saturday and around the same total was estimated in addition to that on Sunday, from over 2,000 received by the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket.

Following a six-day shutdown of racing in Britain, the ruling body is due to decide on Monday evening whether racing can resume on Wednesday.

Racing’s equine-flu lockdown may have already cost the industry around £5million – according to leading independent expert Professor Tom Cannon.

Professor Cannon runs the Thoroughbred Horseracing Industries MBA course at Liverpool University, and is well placed to attempt to put a figure on the ongoing cost to racing of no action on the track.

The British Horseracing Authority is due to make an announcement late on Monday night on whether racing can resume on Wednesday.

“You’ve got to look at different parts of the industry – and as yet, nothing lost is on the list of the BHA’s major events,” said Professor Cannon.

“We’ve lost around 20 meetings so far, so about 120 races. The biggest issue there will be gate receipts.

“Attendances would only be in the low thousands rather than the high thousands you’d get at somewhere like Cheltenham – so I would have thought it wouldn’t be much more than £2-3million lost.

“You then have all the other things that are associated with tha,t because there are lots of logistical costs. First off there are all the tests being carried out – they might cost another £500,000.

“Then there’s the question of prize money. Most of it will be reallocated, but I would have thought you’d be talking somewhere in the low millions. There’s only really been Newbury that has been lost of the bigger meetings.

“I would estimate that the hit so far to racing would be round about £5million.”

While so far no livelihoods have been placed at risk, a lengthy break – especially with the Cheltenham Festival only four weeks away – could be catastrophic.

Professor Cannon added: “The big issue, of course, is how long it lasts. Everyone mentions the case in Australia in 2007 when racing was wiped out for months and that had a big impact.

“Everything I’ve read suggests all these horses have been vaccinated, so a big issue could be if the BHA needs to come up with a new vaccine. We know flu viruses do mutate and that would be a real issue, it would cost a large amount funding the research into a new vaccine.

“One real worry for the BHA is that there appears to be no link between the two yards that have tested positive so far.

“Everybody, of course, is terrified about Cheltenham – and if we lost Cheltenham then you are talking about 10s of millions if it stretched that long. They are multi-million-pound events.

“A lot rests on when racing resumes. If it goes on another week, the figure won’t double, it will start multiplying – because then you start getting a loss of confidence and real worries.”
