Bunny, here we go no doubt lots of answers, but the drawer is probably damaged. Nothing much you can do in situ I think.
Answer. Remove CD from tower (power off and earthed) take to a friendly PC man for inspection. Probably will require new unit luckily they are now quite cheap. Or better still get friendly PC man to visit.

Bunny do you have a DVD drive, if you have it will do to drive CD's not sure if it will write on them though, have not tried that. Good luck and if you are not sure keep out of the tower.

I've managed to push it back in almost, only about 1/2 or so hanging
out now..oh well thanks guys much appreciated, I'll get the manual out
and check how easy/difficult it is to get the DVD bit out - would
prefer to take IT to a repair man then the whole thing and I can imagine
the arm and a leg they would charge to come out - so that's probably a
non-starter....Thanks again...what is it they say never work with kids...
bless him, he's looking awful sheepish.....

stockbunny, once you get the outer case off it is surprisingly easy to remove CD/DVD/etc.
Just some screws and the little jack plug thing stuck in the back of it.
You MUST switch off at the power point though.

Give him a screwdriver Bunny and let him have a go!! they are removed and replaced very easily. Once the tower case is off usually 2 screws and 2 leads, just pull/push connections. Unit slides out of the tower front.

What an interesting morning....continuing the saga from last night...
1. Into town to track down a new DVD/CD ROM drive - it was fine until they
cottoned on to the fact I was going to try and fit it myself - this is
where you men definitely have a huge advantage I can tell you, in being
taken seriously when it comes to anything involving the technical or mechanical!
One tried to sell me a new hard drive....Duh??no comment...
Another tried to completely baffle me with science on having to use
earthing belts or something....
2. Rang HP (Hew.Pack) technical advise and first suggestion was....
buy an external devise to do the job..(hmmm from my end)
But I want to fit it back where the old one was! (Hmmm at the other end..) Followed by Are you experienced in this sort of thing?
(This sounded remarkably like the conversation I had with the salesman..
Anyway cut a long story short, he did after a while start talking to me
on the level of OK so you want to have a go and it's not rocket science
really...(Yippee!!)Apparently I can 'earth myself' enough by touching a nearby radiator before I touch the inside of the computer, not a belt in sight...
Its not done yet, as I have to order a new one first, apparently you don't
mend these things, the only option is chuck it away, no point opening it up before a new one can go in, in its place. (Bet it is fix-ible really...)
So (sitting down with cup of tea) how's everyone else's day going??

Glad you are sorting things out Bunny. Do you have any computor fairs in your area? if you do you will be able to buy a DVD drive there, and at a good price with some advise as well
