How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Damn, just got to the PC to place my bet and they scored. Damn!

Scripophilist - 06 Feb 2005 12:31 - 978 of 10502

Was only 20% anyhow. Probably some good opportunities later.

chartist2004 - 06 Feb 2005 12:31 - 979 of 10502

Gooday guys - Celtic, greened up within 10mins for another 22.8% easy profit. Next!

chartist2004, what's your strategy on the golf?

I layed Mickelson last night (no not like that!!) at 1.25

I could green up now at 1.27, for 73p profit. But I'm not sure what to expect from the price before and when he tees off. Also I don't have a feed to the state of play.

Afternoon guys,

Been out most of yesterday and today so missed out on some really big potential gains especially with Scot/Fra game. My gain was only modest compared with some on this thread.

Started this morning with a good win on Aus/Pak cricket but will be looking for some action today.

kajman - 06 Feb 2005 15:42 - 986 of 10502

Thanks Fundy

Fundamentalist - 06 Feb 2005 15:52 - 987 of 10502

Hope no one was trying to buy money on southampton at the death

Scripophilist - 06 Feb 2005 15:54 - 988 of 10502

No, But gutted, we really needed those three points, Desperately. I fear we are nearly doomed we so needed to win that one. It looks like luck will not be with us.

Fundamentalist - 06 Feb 2005 16:06 - 989 of 10502

Sorry scrip - forgot you were a "saint". Personally think Harry will get you out of trouble, theres plenty of other poor sides to go down

Bones - 06 Feb 2005 16:10 - 990 of 10502

I will find out more on the course I know, but as a taster, I see the odds on Chelsea winning are 1.32 just before kick off. How are you guys playing that, if you are at all?

Fundamentalist - 06 Feb 2005 16:24 - 991 of 10502

Bones

personally am just watching at present, if chelsea havent scored getting on for half time and the odds are above 1.6 i will back chelsea and then look to green up if and when they score

Fundamentalist - 06 Feb 2005 16:28 - 992 of 10502

Chelsea currently looking toothless without Robben

Bones - 06 Feb 2005 16:37 - 993 of 10502

Thanks Fundamentalist, For the record using small trial sums, I decided to lay Chelsea at 1.32 100 leaving with a max liability of 32 on the basis that Chelsea (no Robben, Drogba) might take time to get going and knowing Man City are the kind of team to do the unexpected.

After 20 mins of midfield play, I decided to green up at 1.5 for safety only for a 12 profit across the outcomes like so:

EDIT: sorry about the gap in the photo!

Of course, an early Chelsea goal would see me down probably 25 straight away if I were to close off. The question for me to find out at the course is whether there was any sense in my play!!!

I look forward to it.

Fundamentalist - 06 Feb 2005 16:49 - 994 of 10502

Bones

you obviously understand the theories - you will get statistical evidence from scrip as to what strategies you should use.

Well done with your profit, but put into context you risked 32 to win 12 on Chelsea not scoring in the first half hour or so - i am guessing but i think if you had tried that over the season with chelsea home games you would have lost money (they have led after half an hour in more than 1 game in 2.5 i would guess)

Bones - 06 Feb 2005 16:56 - 995 of 10502

Indeed Fundy! (first 20 mins rather than half hour). I didn't think it stacked up but the absence of key players had some bearing on it.

Nonetheless, it seems similar to, albeit a bit riskier than, the France/Scotland rugby strategy that you all piled on yesterday (so would I had I not been out). So what's the "fundamental" difference?

PS It can wait until the course if you are embargoed on trade secrets :)

kajman - 06 Feb 2005 17:01 - 996 of 10502

Bones, I'm new to this but think it's just down to the odds. France were 1.06 at the start of the match - a lot better than Chelsea at 1.32
