How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Lots of burnt fingers for those trading/betting on the overs on the betfair forums. I think everyone and their dogs were expecting a goal feast tonight

No doubt many of those were on the over 1.5, it cost me 30% of my profit to green up, leaving a 40% return on my bet. I think most stock traders would settle for that for 5 mins work. One thing I am learning at the moment is that a guaranteed smaller profit is better than no profit at all or even loss of the original stake.

Amen to that pth - it's too easy to switch from "trader" to "punter". I have the scars :-)

Wake-up the Henman layers. He's just about to take on Agassi in round 1 of the Stella Artois - Eurosport 410

Come on the Aussies

took a few quid at 50 when 1-0 with 10 mins to go, 6 mins for a winner :-)

Backed at 50s, greened at 1.04 - oh if it was only always this easy

Pommy - 12 Jun 2006 16:03 - 9851 of 10502

Very lucky, I backed Aussies a 1-0 too, but Japan had a def penalgty and cahill would have been off for a second yellow!!

Aus deserve to win tho!!

ptholden - 12 Jun 2006 18:26 - 9855 of 10502

Hmm, USA playing without any heart, they should have watched some of the other so called minnows to get a bit of an idea!

bakko - 12 Jun 2006 18:33 - 9856 of 10502

3-0 to the CR now

Fundamentalist - 12 Jun 2006 18:49 - 9857 of 10502

Rosicky looks another steal from Wenger in the transfer market :-)

ptholden - 12 Jun 2006 18:50 - 9858 of 10502

well, loss on the Match Odds, but made most of it up by Dutching the correct score, although sitting on the edge of me seat a bit, cos I didn't cover 'any unquoted' - bit of a relief!!

compoundup - 12 Jun 2006 18:52 - 9859 of 10502

This over/under goals market is good stuff innit. Getting the hang of this round-ball-game now with 40% return on USA/Cz alone :-)

ptholden - 12 Jun 2006 19:09 - 9860 of 10502

Nice one Edward :-)

Having a bit of trouble getting to the Account Statement on Betfair. Normally I like to web-query this from Excel to import all the transaction history for the record. I presume it's due to heavy loads on the system and should be available later. Anyone else having trouble?

ptholden - 12 Jun 2006 19:31 - 9862 of 10502

No, not me, although some bets do take a while to settle??

compoundup - 12 Jun 2006 20:48 - 9863 of 10502

No problem with the "balance" figure, just can't get to the spreadsheet for the moment
