How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Nice one Edward :-)

Having a bit of trouble getting to the Account Statement on Betfair. Normally I like to web-query this from Excel to import all the transaction history for the record. I presume it's due to heavy loads on the system and should be available later. Anyone else having trouble?

No, not me, although some bets do take a while to settle??

No problem with the "balance" figure, just can't get to the spreadsheet for the moment

Green on Italy and the 1.5. Basically chickened out of the latter, will see how the second half goes. Wouldn't be surprised if Italy sit back at some point and protect their one goal lead. Although, they are still 'going for it' at the moment.

Nice one Pete. Ditto here as well.

Well done Baks

Captured 10 more ticks from the under 1.5 but green now

Just as well you got out there Edward

That was a bit of a white-knuckle ride :-)

Dutched the Correct Score again, although didnt relaise I had missed the 1-1 until Ghana nearly got a penalty! Successful day again though. Well done Baks and Edward :-)

bakko - 12 Jun 2006 21:54 - 9871 of 10502

I scalped Italy for 3 ticks and guess what? As soon as I was out they score the 2nd.

At least I profited so cant really complain.

It happens Baks, had a sizeable bet on a recent footy match and ended up green for tens of pounds rather than hundreds :-( Sure it works both ways though.

Just resolved problem with web-query of Account Statement. It was a pop-up blocker in Norton. Never thought of that because I had never had any difficulty before. Betfair telephone support were prompt and first-class, even phoning me back after 5 mins. on one occasion to see if a re-boot had worked.

The problem came about through automatic self-upgrading of the Norton Internet Security product. Once I had added betfair.com deep within the permissions list in the privacy control section the functionality was restored.

If anyone doesn't know how to do this, (I think you need Excel 2003 at least but stand to be corrected):

On a new spreadsheet, go DATA - IMPORT EXTERNAL DATA - NEW WEB QUERY
This brings up a dialog box with an address bar at the top which loads your default home page. You replace the URL with www.betfair.com and bring up Betfair's home/login page. You may need to resize the window to see the login boxes at the top right.
Now log in and when the next page appears, replace the URL again with:

http://www.betfair.com/account/AccountStatement.do?include=all&startRecord=0

Your transaction history should appear (this is the point at which I was only able to get a blank screen - see above). Tick the checkbox that relates to the area of data containing the transaction history then click IMPORT at the bottom of the dialog.

Accept the A1 cell placement offered next.

The dialog disappears and you have all the data, transaction references, commissions, etc. in your own spreadsheet for whatever purpose you require.

Thanks for that edward, how far back does it go?

compoundup - 13 Jun 2006 18:01 - 9875 of 10502

I think it is on a rolling 30-day basis - so you have to capture it at least once a month to maintain a full record.

Note also that the URL ending with ...Record=0 can be changed to ...Record=20 etc. to get the extended data beyond the number of records on the first page of their listing (and =30, etc.)

Some big players are trying to move the Brazil price onto the lay side. Theres 500k+ at 1.38

bakko - 13 Jun 2006 19:50 - 9877 of 10502

8.5m already traded on the Brazil and still more than 10mins to KO!

compoundup - 13 Jun 2006 20:02 - 9878 of 10502

Tempted to lay the under 1.5 goals but 4.5 is a bit dear even in this company

Fundamentalist - 13 Jun 2006 20:35 - 9879 of 10502

Brazil price shortened 11 ticks from 1.6 to 1.49 for a Ronaldinho free kick on edge of box - unbelievable over reaction lol
